Used q to examine this cage, then r to make it a room. I'd like to make this room a jail, but typing j does nothing because "Justice" is grayed out on the right as you can see in the image. What am I missing?



Also want to point out I do have a captain of the guard.

DF General Discussion / A dwarf fortress canvas print for my office

I'm starting on an Oculus Rift project, and my wife suggested I get some art in the office to stimulate my creativity. After searching and searching for something tasteful, creative, and not distracting, I gave up and ordered this 30x30 canvas print from Costco for $100. I'm so excited I came here to post it first before even hanging it up!

Just a few tiles from my Quern in a Furniture stockpile is an empty -kiwi leather bag-, so why does my Farmer refuse to mill my cave wheat?

Any ideas?

DF General Discussion / Anybody seen this bug on OS X?

The actual game is only 1/4 of the window. I thought I maybe messed something in the init files, so I just downloaded a fresh copy of DF and this issue still happens.

Does anybody know how to resolve this? It seems like it's probably some weird environment issue on my end, seeing as it happens after running a clean download of DF.

I wanted to pick a square tileset I liked, but looking at the wiki (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Tileset_repository#8.C3.978) it is not at all clear what tilesets are crap and which are generally likable.

If you aren't familiar with Slant, it is a new up and coming site where you can vote for the "best" of whatever. In this case, we could all get together and put up our favorite tilesets along with why they are so great. I hope I discover some new great tilesets!

I've been away from DF for a while and I'm just coming back.  I noticed that when I select an embark site, I don't get a list of the minerals at the site, instead it just says something like this:

Soil
Shallow Metals
Deep Metals

Previously, I could tell if there was dolomite or limestone or granite.  Did Toady make mention as to why this change happened?  It's really hard to find a location now with bituminous coal or lignite, and so it's hard for me to make enough steel to make armor and weapons to defend against sieges.  Anybody know why and when this happened?

DF Gameplay Questions / Light gray text not light enough?

When making selections, there's a dark gray for text I'm not currently selecting, then a lighter gray for text I am selecting.  For me, the difference between the two is so small it's hard to distinguish them.  How do I change these so the dark gray is darker, and the light gray is lighter?

I'm coming back to DF after a long break, and I've forgotten which key I press to get a list of my dwarves.  I think there was one or two.  The one I'm looking for shows what they are doing right now.

DF Suggestions / Allow designating building of walls, floors, etc.

Currently, to build a wall, you have to start out with a single tile and increase it's width and height, then place it.

I would like to be able to designate a wall to be built in the same way as an area to be mined out, by selecting one corner, then moving to the next corner, and hitting enter.
The game should then calculate how much material is needed for that rectangle, then proceed to the material selection screen as usual.

I'm getting tired of the rectangles in my fortress not having equal length and height, but when I look in the tileset repository, there are about a million choices.  Do any of you use square tilesets?  If so, which have you found is the best, and keeps the original ASCII feel?  I'm not interested in graphics sets like Mayday's.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How do I assign steel armor?

Two questions:
I made a mistake and deleted the "metal armor" item in m->n for my "Metal armor" category, and I can't figure out how to add that back to my "Metal armor" category.  Any suggestions?

Secondly,
How do I equip my squads or military with a certain metal?  I have lots of steel armor/weapons available, but how do I tell them to only use steel weapons/armor?  I can't seem to find a way to specify the material.  Will they automatically choose what "metal" is the best that they can find?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Custom t-shirts

I've seen some custom Dwarf Fortress t-shirts online, but they all were pretty expensive.  I'm thinking of designing a simple DF shirt just to spread the word about how awesome it is.  If I order in bulk, I can get shirts as cheap as $8.69 each (25+ shirts) or even $5.76 each (100+ shirts).

I just wanted to gauge the interest of the community in general.  Have people already done this before and you already have a DF shirt?  If I made a design you were interested in, would you be willing to pay $6-$9 dollars for the shirt, plus $3 for some slow shipping?

Even if only 25 people are interested, I would be happy to mock up some designs in Photoshop (on a similar vein to these: http://www.zazzle.com/dwarf+fortress+gifts), place the order, and ship them out.

Some of my marksdwarves aren't picking up their ammunition.  In the m-f screen, it shows that the squad is assigned 100 metal bolts, and 100 wood bolts.  The specific bunches of 25 bolts for each metal and wood appear, and some of them have check marks next to them.  Does the check mark mean they have picked it up?  If so, why haven't they picked up the other ones?  They're just sitting in the meeting hall right now...

When I look at the marksdwarves I have assigned to a burrow in an archer tower, they don't have any bolts with them either.

Is there something I'm missing to get them to pick the bolts up and equip them?
