And I'm sorry for asking so many newbie questions!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Another marksdwarf question...
« on: October 11, 2010, 11:10:51 pm »
Some of my marksdwarves aren't picking up their ammunition.  In the m-f screen, it shows that the squad is assigned 100 metal bolts, and 100 wood bolts.  The specific bunches of 25 bolts for each metal and wood appear, and some of them have check marks next to them.  Does the check mark mean they have picked it up?  If so, why haven't they picked up the other ones?  They're just sitting in the meeting hall right now...

When I look at the marksdwarves I have assigned to a burrow in an archer tower, they don't have any bolts with them either.

Is there something I'm missing to get them to pick the bolts up and equip them?

That worked for a little bit, now their job just says "Soldier (cannot follow order)"

Hmm...

I created an archery range with 5 targets, and assigned my marksdwarves squad ZTIQ.  Also on the military page, they all have checkmarks next to "crossbow" and the squad has 200 bolts assigned to them (but only one set of bolts shows a checkmark - maybe that's what's wrong).

However, they take turns using the archery range.  I know they shouldn't share a single target, but only one dwarf will practice in the room at a time.

Any ideas?

LOL, I just figured it out - they weren't constructed yet!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Nonremovable up/down stairs?
« on: October 11, 2010, 07:40:17 pm »
So, I initially dug a tile out as "Down Stairs", but later wanted it to be up/down stairs.
I went one z-level up (the surface), and dug some "Down stairs", then did a b-C-x to construct an Up/Down Stair on top of my dug out Down Stairs.

However, the Up/Down Stairs don't connect for some reason with the surface Down Stairs, and I can't remove the stairs by a d-n "Remove Construction".

Am I missing something here?

I've added this issue onto the voting list http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/eternal_voting.php
Go vote for it if you want this implemented.

I added it to the request list under the name "Create constructions using Designations interface."
It is currently number 252, with my single vote.  Vote for it at http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/eternal_voting.php if you want to see this feature.

I don't think that the argument about selecting the construction materials is valid.  Why not designate my 30x3 tile wall, and when I hit [Enter], it can pop up the same menu that appears when I really do construct a wall, the one that asks which materials I want to use.  At that point I can either Shift+Enter a specific one, or choose several different ones.

I really think this would make a lot of constructions like floors and walls much easier.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Animal pits
« on: October 11, 2010, 03:54:43 pm »
When you create a zone, you can designate it as a pit, and throw animals in it.

Why does this feature even exist?  I've never seen a reason to throw animals in a pit...

I can designate any rectangle I want to be mined out, channelled, or trees cut, by marking two corners.

However, when building a wall, I have to use umkh to resize it (with a maximum size), and then place it.

Of all things, I think, making constructions work like designations, would be at the very top of my development list, so I feel like I am missing the whole reason that it works the way it does.  Anybody know?  Is it possible this may be changed in the future so I can build my 50x3 tile walls faster?

Thanks for the info.  I realized while writing the post that I could specify the climate, but was hoping I could still cycle through the results.  I'll probably stick to manual finding for now then.  :(

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Site finder only gives first result?
« on: October 11, 2010, 09:59:24 am »
The site finder is really neat, when I am trying to find a site with no aquifer, and having flux.  However, it appears to only be giving me back the first site that matches my search, which usually happens to be way up in the north pole where the snow never melts.  Is there a way to cycle through all the sites that match my search?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Is the wiki military page outdated?
« on: October 11, 2010, 09:55:18 am »
I'm coming back to DF after a few months of break since I got married.  When I left, it was practically impossible to make marksdwarves actually train, and difficult to get anybody to train at all.  The wiki says:
Quote
Barracks are still necessary for training, but due to a bug it appears that your dwarves will only train when Inactive, despite what the Train command may have you believe. Marksdwarf training also appears to still be a bit glitchy.
Are either of those sentences still true?  Will my marksdwarves train if I get them crossbows, bolts, an archery range, then set them to active duty (training) and hit assign the squad to "T" (train) at the specific archery range?

What are the other assignments at the barracks that you can assign to squads?  I know T means train, but what about I, Q, and the other one?

If somebody could help me out here, I'd be happy to update the wiki myself.
