DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: August 15, 2010, 09:44:55 pm »
I just completed my pump stack that would fuel a reservoir, a well, and a waterfall that cleans up my entrance and trade depot. Everything was set to go, and I installed that last horizontal axle to make the whole thing run.

I waited expectantly at the top layer, hoping to see water gushing out at any moment.

And I kept waiting. Nothing happened.

I started scanning the layers of the stack, and I quickly found the problem: I had installed one of the pumps backward. *facepalm*

Thanks, I'll try some kitten traps.

iceball3:
The forgotten beast Taritha Oma Ricote has come! A great ankylosaurid with lidless eyes. It has a long, swinging trunk and it undulates rhythmically. Its yellow-green scales are round and set far apart. Beware its deadly dust!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Deadly dust!
« on: August 07, 2010, 10:51:01 pm »
I recently fought off a forgotten beast that uses deadly dust attacks. I knew such an attack would be devastating to a large group of dwarves, so I sent a single squad of legendary hammer lords to dispatch it (as opposed to two or three). Before they even struck one hit on the beast, it had insta-killed half the squad. Before the battle was over nine of the ten hammer lords lay dead. And, looking at the combat logs, I suspect the thing died in its own dust, not due to any injuries my dwarves gave it.

Are there any good ways to deal with beasts with deadly dust? This seems like a pretty cheap attack to me, but I have no doubt people have come up with ingenious and dwarvenly solutions to the problem.

A hunter claimed a craftsdwarf's workshop and gathered all sorts of nice materials, like pig iron bars and cut tsavorites. A short time later, he comes out and presents this to the world:

Oh joy.

I prefer to toss my excess animals off the top of a tower. Sure, it's only as fast as the dwarves can climb the tower, but the splash of body parts as the creature hits the floor is remarkably satisfying.

Yeah, this sucks. I didn't realize I had a problem until everyone started dying.

Ugh. A child just crafted an artifact. She started out with three blocks of raw adamantine, which was very promising. A short while later, I get a beautiful raw adamantine... mini-forge. It's not even very interesting:

It's worth 1,213,200 DB... but it's a useless mini-forge. :P

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Sparring-Current Status?
« on: July 26, 2010, 04:23:25 pm »
I saw two of my dwarves sparring a few hours ago, and I was very excited. I also witnessed a few demonstrations. Unfortunately, I had to disband my squads because I noticed that one of my captains had been dead for a while (whoops!), and I haven't seen any sparring since then. I'm optimistic, though, since it happened once. :P

EDIT:
I just booted the game up again, and some dwarves started sparring again. It seems to be working just fine for me.

I had a dwarf lose an arm while fighting a pack of dralthas early on. He still managed to kill a few forgotten beasts before I noticed his injury and retired him to mining. Now he's a one-armed legendary miner who can dig with the best of them.

I've noticed that the Escape key became a lot less responsive between versions of DFTerm. Before 0.31.11, I was using a version I downloaded a couple of weeks ago. When 0.31.11 was released, I upgraded DFTerm and found that hitting escape takes a second or two to respond, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. Meanwhile, on the server machine, the game is perfectly responsive.

The server machine is running Windows 7 64-bit and the client is connecting with PuTTY on Ubuntu 10.04. Is anyone else having this issue?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Problems under a glacier
« on: July 16, 2010, 06:02:18 pm »
Odd. The constructed stairs utterly failed on my last embark, but it worked this time!

Hyndis: Ramps worked to get the dwarves to the bottom glacial layer, but they wouldn't continue digging from there. It was really strange.

In any case, everything is working properly now. :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Problems under a glacier
« on: July 16, 2010, 05:34:58 pm »
My latest embark is on a glacier with an obsidian layer right under it. No plants, no surface water. Sounds like Fun, right?

The trouble is that my dwarves refuse to go beneath the glacier. I instruct them to dig stairs through the ice, but when the get to the last ice layer they just channel away the layer and refuse to go down there. Now, I can dig ramps around the stairs and then tell them to continue digging, but the most I can get them to do is dig one layer of down stairs and then stop working.

Am I missing something important about glaciers, or is this a crazy bug?

Yeah, I know, but then it still clashes with constructed walls. :P

In general, all of my workshops and similar (furnaces, trade depot) go in their own rooms with a 1-tile border around the building, so workshops go in 5x5 rooms and the trade depot goes in a 7x7 room. The workshops have one entrance each, so I can set down a door or a cage trap to deal with any berserk dwarves.

Also, I prefer to smooth everything, but I don't like engravings. They're too visually busy, so I leave them to a few select areas where I know they will be appreciated.

Aha! I didn't know about the zoom. That solves everything. Thank you very much.
