DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: July 01, 2012, 09:16:34 pm »
Bestra the Dragon invades. Bestra is captured in the cage trap. Cage is stored in the stockpile. ALL animals are selected to be taken to the Pasture.

Bestra is let from his cage and INCINERATES 40 of 65 dorfs INSTANTLY in the great hall.

Not even enough dorfs left for a proper tantrum spiral! The militia commander head shots Bestra with a crossbow then goes into melancholy when his revenge is complete and Bestra falls. Abandon Fortress... HOORAY! F'PALM

epilogue; some migrants have just arrived, despite the danger! DERP

Life Advice / Re: Browser Hijacking... or, Search hijacking.

I'm thinking a dedicated network firewall is the solution to keeping this crap out. I wouldn't mind the extra hardware in my space if it worked.

Anti-malware software just doesn't seem to cut it on residential lines, especially. I never noticed stuff like this on the campus lines.

Creative Projects / Re: Looking to make a few Videos.
« on: June 28, 2012, 10:55:47 am »
Do tutorials on surviving the first year; digging; making food; beer; traps. The basics. Make it easy for a new person to have fun early, so they get sucked in later. Instant gratification right?

I doubt there can be enough videos for the basics - try doing a video for each biome; like one for serene and one for terrifying biomes. The starting conditions are vastly different and it's silly when a new player gets wiped out by zombie weasels and choked by zombie fingers from their own dorfs... despite the fact it's hilarious.

Also make people appreciate how fuckin' complex the simulation is. And dorf feelings, they need to be explained. Dorfs hurt.

Creative Projects / Re: Programming ideas

Grab a copy of Game Maker's Apprentice; it has several 'can be done in a afternoon' projects in it. Mazes.. pongs.. simple AI.

It'll hold your hand or you can do whatever you want with it. Mostly I keep books like this to get ideas. It's kinda fun too. It has a website... you can check that also.

http://www.yoyogames.com/make/ I thought the software used to be free but... dunno, they might have gotten greedy. Try the book.

I can't find ANY copies of The Game Maker's Companion which is the sequel... crap! I wanted that. Bugger. It's such a great series for this kind of stuff.

If you use the toy software it comes with you can sketch out some prototypes and then program it in any language you want.

I was about to do some of that myself next couple weeks now that class is done. Summer projects!

Also David Perry on Game Design is great for brain-storming. Just grab some game design books and you'll have too many ideas real fast.

Bought a copy; part sentimental part necessity.

I think one of the best parts of the book is the preface by Tarn himself.

It reminds me that someone is furiously working through the night to cultivate our dorfs' future. BLOOD FOR ARMOK!

Learned a lot about eggs and embarking. I'm up to chapter six about Merchants - I already know to kill the Elves, what else could I need to know?

Creative Projects / dorf blog for dorfs and their 'fun' pics and doom

Feel free to admire my fine picture blog of my dorfs as they strike the earth and get vaporized by Dragons.

BLOOD FOR ARMOK DEATH TO ELVES!!!

Just for fun. It's kind of like a Polaroid journal of my grisly endings.

The first posting is pretty classic... :D More in the coming days-weeks.
