But what makes path finding something that is hard to do in parallel with other processes?

that it has not be written to work in parallel with other processes.
threading it's the kind of thing that is very hard to add if you don't think about it upfront.

not that it's an impossible feat. only that late threading addition comes with all sort of unintended side effects.

and path finding is one of the most natural thing to thread, as it's already an asynchronous process, even if done in the same thread (a path request may take more than one game frame to complete - when dwarves have that question mark over them)

but when you take it from being asynchronous to being a full fledged separate thread, handling all the locking to simulate the previous behavior to avoid bugs and weird stuff is very hard to do. and if you don't do that but just rewrite it as a proper dispatched request, avoiding bugs is still very hard, because the locks that allow to handle terrain updates (water, doors, bridges, digging) when removed may broke the path finding in very subtle and disastrous ways.

...what can you think Adventure mode would be like? Not sure what it would be like seeing as I haven't played it much (due to the fact 0.31.16 Adventure mode is broken, much to my dismay.). How horfric evil sinful eye bleaching fun would it be?

will be a super boring medieval life simulator
you'll have to get up eight in the morning, go to the mine, dig up a few stone, 6 days a week. the seventh you'll have to build a tiny section of the huge castle of the local landlord, working for bread and a bit of soup, while getting older and older.

maybe, after a dozen generation, you'll have saved up enough for a rusty dagger, so that one of your son may work as an adventurer on one of the successive plays. maybe. if no war comes and destroy everything you got.

what happens if I link multiple pressure plate to the same bridge?

and what if I add a lever to the mix?

I'm very very impressed. it's the first time I see a dwarf getting tended after.

and now the second one is under surgery!

incredible.
and awesome.

and it survived the infection!

you can't butcher sentient until you modify the game for it.

a bit off topic:

I just discovered that it's toady one, and not today one.

which perfectly makes sense.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Marksdwarf towers
« on: November 04, 2010, 11:06:38 am »
I'll try to make some screen later when I get home.

but consider that if the tower is anywhere near the entrance, after your dwarves have shoot their bolts they will likely charge the enemy

I mean, kobold thief, or flying stuff are one thing... but trapavoid titans??

Not to worry, you can mod Titans to not be trapavoid... if you're willing to tinker.

too much updates for now to start playing a modded fortress. I was maintaining a list of small modification, like enabling all metals for weapons and armor and such, but it was really cumbersome.

I guess that when the update stream slows or when there is a sufficiently complete mid term release where I may be able to ignore updates for a bit I'll try the modders way

try to set the burrow not on all the tower floor, but only on the floor space immediately near the fortifications

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: who else thinks horses are a bit too strong?
« on: November 04, 2010, 10:10:09 am »
Try and survive a horse kick in real life. Now make that horse skeletal, immune to pain, and therefore not worried about kicking its damn hardest. That's a skeletal horse.

This. Also take into account that Dwarves aren't as tall as humans, so a horsekick is probably going to hit them right in the head.

as a matter of fact, thousands of butchers die yearly providing you with cow and horse meat... only not.
