By the way, does a one-ended aqueduct serve ANY purpose whatsoever?
I suppose you could place it over water, the chasm, or lava, then fill it with water forcing creatures to walk around it, and as they do, open a lava floodgate and steam them?
Otherwise, if it does have a purpose, i havn't found it yet.

Your problem the first time is that an aquaduct has to have TWO exits--left and right
You can also create T-shape and intersection ( + ) aquaducts. pressing W, A, S, and D will create the desired opening in the aquaduct; A+D will create a horizontal aquaduct, while W+S would create a vertical one.
Also note that aquaducts, if either of the 3 end peices are NOT touching land, the aquaduct WILL flood with that liquid! This means that an aquaduct that only goes halfway across the lava river will fill with lava.

Is there a way to fix a cave-in, ie, once it's caved in, how do I clear away everything? I tried to [d]ig it all back out, but I couldn't designate all of the debris to be mined out.</STRONG>
When the cave river or magma river floods when you hit it, it generates a danger level which prohibits mining in the area. The same thing may occur when a cave in happens. Give it a minute (the tiles which were turned into debris piles will support the ceiling) and then attempt to designate the debris area for mining.
As stated above, build a support somewhere within the 7x7 area to stop further cave-ins.
It'd also make sense that the wooden doors would be weaker then the stone doors, especially when up against a fire-spewing creature, if the above were true.
[It'd also make a "Brace Door" metalsmithing job sensible; now, you can brace weaker doors with stronger materials.]
[OMG, Skull doors!

Drowning deaths caused by moat flooding are relatively common... So the most your moat ever really needs to be is 1 tile wide. You can make it wider of course, but just keep in mind that as dwarves wander around the front gate, some are bound to go into the channel... and drown.
[Also, when you're eventually able to fill the moat with lava, any dwarf doing a job [that needs to cross the moat to finish it] will attempt to "Beat the train" so to speak, and walk along where the lava is going to go... And get burnt up in the process. The same goes for animals; including pets.
If you do get a corpse in a moat, just build a bridge over it to "destroy" the body and stop it from generating "Cannot find path:" messages]
