"Ruyava Urnnightmare" is a pretty badass name for an amphibian.  Here is my version:

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: October 17, 2012, 11:04:52 am »
Got bored with the last fort and the never-ending parade of goblins eviscerating themselves in the front entrance way.

I decided instead restart in a mountain biome.  This is the first time I've started in a biome not teeming with the dreaded enemy, trees.

So far, I've dug out the basics, including a trade depot.  The location has two mountains joined by a saddle, with steep (but not extreme) cliffs.  in the northwest is a river head.  In the southeast is a flat field consisting of sand and exposed shale.  I dug into the mountainside from the field, and immediately began mining out an underground resevoir.  I was happy to learn that the earth underneath the fieldl consisted of sand, allowing me to dig out substantial farmlands.

I think we will be building a small town on the plain, with a wall around it--somewhat like Dale and the Lonely Mountain.  I might also try to build Orthanc.

Thanks, Chewie.  Didn't really need a full night's sleep tonight anyway.

I would point out that a mandible is also the lower part of the jaw of any animal.

wait... what... bloated? DAMMIT AGAIN!

Well. . . maybe he has some gastro-intestinal problems from all the dwarves he ate.  Or perhaps Castot is a she, and is retaining water.

I'm a bit distressed at the silliness coming from this particular contest.  I suppose I have to raise the tone a bit with a second entry.

Now that I've done that, I'll go hide my head in shame.

I like Knicks dwarfs best of all

"Going on break"

Thanks for that!  However, if you look closely "going on a break" is actually fitting a bolt into his crossbow.  I think the only thing missing is the golden haired dwarf carrying a baby into battle.  I'm not ashamed to admit I was influenced by some of the "prepare for battle" scenes from Bravemule.

It's the little dance at the end that makes it work.

Yo Knick, mind if I do one based on the pun?

Puns deserve to be free!!  (So no, I don't mind at all and even encourage it.)

Time to wrap up.  We have three entries as follows:

From Icecold, what I would best describe as a lurking horror.  Exactly the sort of creature that would scare the bejabbers out of your standard dwarf.  I particularly like the runic-looking etchings in the rock--sort of mine signs indicating that there is a danger ahead.

Spoiler: Quelge Thefin Usluh (click to show/hide)

Next is GreatWyrmGold, who encountered the same sizing problem I did when I first submitted to this thread.  Actually, I found sizing the image in Paint works well, although you still have to work on making it legible (took me several tries).  I like the small cloud of bolts.  When Quelge finally fell, it was after a sustained period of bleeding out in a lake, which this seems to capture nicely.

Spoiler: HUGE Image! (click to show/hide)

Let's give a round of applause for my digital camera, which has left this image a bit bigger than the piece of paper I drew it on!
Okay, it's not colored, but I included six crudely-drawn dwarves and a bunch of cavern wildlife! And the shell is actually enormous! And the head looks like a skull with some muscle and sinew on it!

Last one is Chewie, whose unfinished work is still impressive--a sort of Slenderman version of Quelge.  I note that what looks like the right front leg seems to articulate backwards.  I don't know whether or not this was deliberate or a mistake, but it adds to the unsettling look of the creature, and I like it.

This basically just became a greyscale painting of a toad without all the specific features the FB has. But I was quite surprised by my painting skills and since there's not much going on here, I thought I'd upload it anyway.

I also stopped painting mid-work while I got on the background. So it's not even finished.

Thanks, everyone for contributing.  I'm giving this to Icecold.  Congratulations!

Since the entries have slowed down, I'm going to give this to Sunday evening.

I can give this one a shot...skinless toad, enormous shell, deadly dust, rhythmic undulation, shot to death, upper body go...you know that the death-u-screen thing always shows the basic body part (i.e. upper body) as missing, right?

Actually, I didn't know that.  Right now, there is only a skeleton and a pool of blood in an underground lake.
