General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O
« on: October 28, 2012, 04:12:13 pm »
Well for one they'd have to be notably smarter than me, who is the only person where I can objectively say that they're not a genius.
However, I (allegedly) also have a higher IQ than the average person. Which kinda implies that either the test is a load of bull or that there's another factor that I don't know of. Personally I think it's the former because despite what people claim, I'm not smart. Smart people don't violate common sense on a regular basis.

Basically what I'm saying is that tests are a bad way to identify genii. Actions are where it's at.

An IQ of 140 is higher than roughly 95% of the population. If that doesn't qualify someone as a genius, what does?

I fail to see how your 'allegedy' higher IQ than the average person is really relevant, as the word 'allegedly' would seem to imply you haven't actually had it tested, or don't know the result if your parents had you tested as a child. If you don't know where you are in relation, how can you make a judgement call?

Also as an aside, common sense is neither common or sensible. Unless you're talking about stuff like 'Don't touch hot things with your bare hands' or 'don't stick your face in a blender', I guess.

General Discussion / Re: A bay12 lower boards IRC.

You'll never get 80 *active* members, the majority of people in an IRC channel are always going to be idlers. There are people in #bay12games I've never seen say anything in the entire time they've been there.

The only time it got close to that was when DF2010 was released, and we got up to about 200-300 people in the channel, and yeah that was basically unworkable. There's definitely an upper limit on how many people can really talk in an IRC channel at the same time, but you probably won't hit it.

Oh, and on the other thing from earlier in the thread: Banning dissent is definitely a bad idea. Trolls will use it to get your regular members in trouble by riling them up so they snap and then complaining to you, for one.

I'd just like to say that smeding and G-Flex are both acting entirely on their own, and them causing any drama isn't something that is organised or condoned by #bay12games. I just don't want us getting a worse reputation than we apparently already have over this whole thing, when we don't have anything to do with it.

To chime in on the moderation thing with a bit of advice, from the prospective of #bay12games we found that leaving moderation fairly loose and open was fine when we only had a few regulars around (say, less than 10 people active at one time), but when you get into a more active channel you really need to have some more firm moderation policies in place, as people *will* try and act like dicks and then tell you to "Point out which rule I broke!! You can't say I broke any rules when there aren't any!!" and various other rules lawyering nonsense to stir up more drama.

I never thought I'd post something relevant to this thread on this topic. I've been ranting a few other places, and I think it deserves some scrutiny from non-fans, as talking to them tends to devolve into talking about the fandom itself rather than the issue. Also do note that I'd be posting this here if something similar happened in anything else I was interested in.

The problem: Hasbro censored a handicapped pony in MLP:FiM. Unfortunate implications, ahoy.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This sort of thing bugs me a lot too.  It's effectively trading an active form of persecution for passive one.  It's really tough to deal with, too.  Many people disagree on how to deal with things like this, but it's too taboo for conversation, so the difficulties are never resolved.  It just get's ignored while the problem worsens.

This is particularly hard on people who live with such issues.  They might get a few government services if they are lucky, but it won't make up for the damage caused by being shunned by society, or being encouraged to shun loved ones.

So you think it is better for handicapped people to be negatively portrayed by the media than not at all? Because make no mistake, this was a negative portrayal. I mean for gods sake, the character literally had the most stereotypical, offensive voice that someone making fun of the handicapped would use, and was called fucking Derpy

General Discussion / Re: Hollywood Must Be Destroyed
« on: January 18, 2012, 07:46:48 pm »
Destroy it by any mean necessary. I often try to convince peoples that buying anything from conventional channel is unethical and self destructive.
Now there are wonderful things done, but not in Hollywood anymore anyway (yeah I watched citizen Kane recently, fuck what Hollywood has become, they used to be the bests).
[/quote

That's a fallacy. There were just as many bad movies made at the time Citizen Kane was made as there are now, it's just that nobody remembers them. The same way people 20 years from now will remember Schindler's List or The Shawshank Redemption and not Transformers: Dark of the Moon

A little different. In all those examples, one industry replaced another.
Unless the movie and music industries start supplying an encyclopedia that is as convenient or more as wikipedia, it is a step backwards.

Um.... what? What does wikipedia have to do with anything in this topic?

In regards to the topic itself:

This will not work, just flat out. People can't even arrange a boycott of video games over their publishers nefarious dealings, let alone a boycott of the entire entertainment industry. And no, just pirating it doesn't count as a boycott. You can't have your cake and eat it too, an actual boycott would be no new music, no listening to radio, no watching television or going to the cinema and... well, nobody will ever do that.

People aren't going to give up their own personal comfort for a (frankly completely ridiculous) goal of 'destroying the entire entertainment industry' because of copyright law. The proper solution is to defeat this at the policy level, not burn the whole thing to the ground.

It won't be me.

I'm curious as to what Hitty40 did/said to get banned.

Saying he should blow up his high school, for one

Edit:

And a topic that was just about spamming images, apparently

Maybe the thread wouldn't devolve into a spiral of hate and circle jerking if a) the categories had anything to do with being a good forumer and b) the nominations weren't all in public.

It's pretty standard fare for this sort of thing to have someone collect the nominations in PM to avoid exactly what has happened here.

My question would be, Why do they have to be unconscious? I mean if you're fighting someone one-on-one, seems likely that you'd be able to grapple them and then bite into them.

Ehh, anyway, back to the thread topic -

Jessica is now my girlfriend and is sitting in the living room, waiting for me to bring over a sandwich my mom made.

Also i learned she's 13.

Ok...

Well, you work fast >___________>

I was going to say something about girlfriends at that age being 'someone whose hand I once held' but then I remembered how young a lot of people lose their virginity now : /

Wait. Is it even within the bounds of the forum ToS to be under age 13? Isn't there some COPPA thing about that, and you have to tick a box saying you're over 13? I forget. Let me check.

Just going to echo this, I'm fairly sure it's actually against the law to collect information from minors without parental consent. I read something just the other day about email accounts being shut down because they belonged to under-13 year olds.

Edit:

Also, stuff his head in a toilet? Seriously?

Mod Releases / Re: Lore/AdventureQuest mod. Now VBASE-constructed!
« on: December 02, 2011, 09:54:24 pm »
Looks like you've put together a pretty comprehensive mod here. Captain Mayday actually linked it to me and asked me if I could post a message for him, which I will now oblige:

Quote from: Captain Mayday
I'd just like to thank you for using VBASE. Certainly seems like you've put it to good use. I've updated my list of mods that use it on the page for it here: http://forums.nothingtolost.com/dicestation/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7&p=19#p19

Sadly since I'm banned here, I'm forced to update my mods on a different forum altogether. If you want to give me any suggestions, ask me any questions, or anything else, that's the place to do it.

Before anyone asks, it's a long story.

Anyway, keep up the good work!

Captain Mayday, Makrond and Retro have been banned for supporting Dasleah's multiple ban dodges and generally flouting moderation.

Well that's complete bullshit. 'Flouting moderation'? What, because they said they don't agree with you and the way you run things? This just comes off as really petty. Both of them were being quite reasonable, and I don't remember either of them supporting Dasleah ban-dodging at any point.

Don't bother banning me for 'flouting moderation' as well, I can see myself out.

Edit: Should probably be 'because they don't agree with you on the way you run things.' As far as I am aware nobody has problems with Toady personally

Actually. This lock I can admit was bad. But I did it because simply... I guess I needed to see for myself how bad the reactions to this one simple thread being locked can get. Simply put I don't think it's worth locking on my part ever now simply because people react so badly to it. It's... Weird.

But yes I apologize for that one.

No real reason to apologize. You've managed to see that you have a considerable amount of influence on the forums, (or at least on GD), and folks will look at your actions and warnings and reconsider their own.
All in all, a pretty good outcome.

* Something Evil shoos _____ away again.
Yes. Social interactions work that way.

Except that's not an example anyone should be following. It's bad enough to lock a thread because you don't agree with what is happening in it, but to do it for something happening in a completely different thread? How is that at all a positive example?

If everyone follows that then you just have a ridiculous cold war where everyone is locking random threads for perceived slights everywhere.

I see where Mr. Underscores is coming from, as I get a bit disappointed when the Happy Thread is used as leverage to control/guide discussion in a way that the OP cares for. However, Mr. Underscores is being an asshat about it. Be chill and rational, and if you have a complaint raise it in a constructive way.

My view on the matter is still that it's completely ludicrous that a thread creator can lock their own thread. That's a power that's just way too open to abuse.
