You know this is getting bad enough for me to attempt something

You know, no offense but a) What does it have to do with you, you weren't even involved in the discussion, b) who appointed you the forum police and c) how is locking an unrelated topic going to help anything?

Also everyone saying the thread has been derailed, you can't derail something that doesn't have a topic in the first place. It annoys me every time any kind of discussion starts in one of these threads, people feel the need to go UH PLZ TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE. Isn't having a thread with no defined topic supposed to be so there can be random discussions like that? That's the rationale I remember being passed around before.

It's already gone.

Also, you're seriously gonna follow 'I saw a dead child' with 'A kind of annoying troll came back'?

Firstly, there's a common misconception that kicking someone in the nuts is an instant takedown. This is not true. If you've ever actually been in a real fight and felt an adrenaline rush you know that you can shrug off damage a lot easier than if someone just walks up and kicks you in the balls.

Two, if you do that you instantly escalate the fight. The other guy is now going to be super pissed, and he is not going to hesitate at all to kick /you/ in the balls. So if you lose the fight, you've just guaranteed yourself a few good boots into that area yourself.

Thirdly, if this is some school bully you just kicked in the nuts he is going to hold a grudge, and you have to be in the same place as him every day for quite some time.

Life Advice / Re: very poorly cat :(

I like his argument that "some of the testimony was ridiculously convincing". You can get people to testify that rock salt cures AIDS if you really want to. Especially if you work for a company that sells AIDS-curing rock salt.

Not to mention that if you have to rely on testimonials it means you don't have anything more solid to present.

In regards to the actual topic:

I really feel for you. A couple of months ago I had to take my cat to get put down - she was old, had lost a lot of weight and was very weak. Even then, it was still a difficult decision to make, and a sad one.

My only piece of advice would be if the cat does have feline HIV and you genuinely can't afford the treatment, it would be kinder to have the cat put down than to have it suffer.

Or if you're going down the cutscene route, there's computer generated movies.

I guess there could be a game where the storyline is the main focus but the gameplay contributes to it in a meaningful way.  Can't think of any, though...
I guess there's games like Facade. But I don't know if I'd recommend that to someone.

Facade is basically 'A really awkward night at a friend's house:The Video Game'

Seriously, there's no way to /prevent/ a fight. No matter what subject they start on, it always ends up incredibly awkward for the poor player avatar

Photographs really don't do it justice.  The video footage going around is mindblowing.  It's on a such a scale, that every shot takes a few seconds to really register what you're looking at.  As in, "Holy shit, those white and blue things bobbing in that river are cars, and that river is a farm field."

It's hard to imagine that the real death toll is going to be anywhere near 32 by the time the water is cleared away.  I'm honestly afraid for how the entire country is supposed to recover from devastation like that, when so much of the country's existence is effectively at coast-level.

Not to mention that the fishing industry will likely be completely ruined, along with the agriculture industry - there's a lot of footage of farms being swamped with a wave of debris (and in one case, a burning building on the tsunami wave). Couple that with the likely damage to export industries, and I can't see how Japan is going to feed itself, or pay for imported food.

Also yeah, I think 32 is a long way short of the tragic toll we're going to see here.

I had a friend in Japan, thankfully he's okay. Power is out where he is though in Morioka.

8 confirmed dead so far. I think that's going to be a long way away from what it turns out to be, looking at these pictures.

The Wii is still going fairly strong, but I have heard rumors of a new console. The 3DS, which is supposed to be coming out soon, is supposed to have the processing power of the Wii, but in console form.

That's probably not that difficult, given how woefully underpowered the Wii is. I honestly think that's the one big misstep Nintendo make with the Wii - sure, it let them get it out way cheaper than everyone else but it's dating far faster than the 360 or the PS3.

As for the next generation of consoles, I think we're still a faiiir way off on that. Microsoft and Sony had to eat some pretty big losses on selling their consoles early on due to high cost of making them, so I think they'll stretch as much life out of them as they possibly can.

Couple that with the fact that there isn't really a pressing need in the form of the consoles lagging behind in processing power and graphics, and I think it will be quite a while before we see the Playstation 4 or the Xbox 1080. May see the Wii 2, though.

Edit: Oh, in reply to the actual post at the start of this thread:

In a nutshell, I think you're completely wrong. Fallout:New Vegas is one of my favourite games of all time now, and it's one I have got a lot of playtime out of. Does it equal my playtime on Baldurs Gate 2 yet? I don't think so, but that's because when that came out I had way more free time to play video games. I think the mainstream industry may have become a little bit more 'safe' to protect the massive investments involved, but the sheer expansion in artistic quality of games now(with full voice acting, excellent stories and fantastic graphics) kind of makes up for it.

Not to mention that indie games are really pushing the boundaries of games, now that they have vectors to easily get out to people with digital distribution. All in all I think it's an exciting time for gaming.

DF General Discussion / Re: DF IRC

Or it was, until extremely recently. Toady, could we please get a word as to why the link has been removed, especially after we fought so hard to maintain it following an incident last year?

Because the IRC became a pool of drama and nonsense that Toady didn't want to associate with in anything resembling official terms.

I personally stopped caring about the IRC entirely when the person who graciously set up the new room decided to not let the Toady-appointed mod team (me included) be moderators anymore and apparently spent a good deal of time trash talking me.

You turned up months after we changed networks and demanded to be a moderator, then when it was pointed out you were never actually in the channel you just left.

Beat me to it.

Ancient Neanderthals brains are thought to be bigger than Homo-Erectus. AKA cavemen had bigger brains than us.

Size isn't really that important, what is far more important is surface area. That's why the brain looks like it does, to allow as much surface area as possible.

That sounds.... nasty. Ew.

Did you not realise she was due soon or what? Usually you should have a place ready where they feel safe to prevent them from doing that. Aside from that, congratulations on the kittens I guess?

Right. And all this has nothing to do with you lot deliberately trying to provoke me for your own amusement.

Actually, that's exactly what it has to do with. Don't flip out and threaten to shoot people = people won't bait you for their own amusement. This is not rocket science.

Gamer, just lock this thread and stop posting for a few days. Try to see how the community interacts in its usual state. Try to emulate that in your own posts :)

Soooo... Conform. I don't think so. And Anticheese, normal people do not insult me. That is because I am civil and polite to them, which is because they don't insult me. If you lot want me to be rational, then you need to take a look at yourselves. The only difference between me and you is that I let the emotion out.

So basically you have no idea of how to control your own rage outbursts, and you consider this a sign of your enlightenment and rationality. Herp derp.

Protip - knowing that it's not appropriate or acceptable to say everything that comes into your mind is a sign of good sense and maturity.

I have the right to demand that Retro stay away from a thread I created if him posting on it ends with this.

I don't want to get angry. I don't want an arguement. This is why I'm asking Retro to leave. We've all been through this before. We know where it will end up. Do we need to do this again?

Dude, it ends with this because you let it get to you and flip out disproportionately. It's also not fair to try to force someone else out of a thread, even one you created. We don't need people literally getting shunned here.

You know what, fuck it. I'm leaving. I'll be back in around five hours. Plus, if Retro makes a thread, then I won't post on it. I want nothing to do with him. Him ignoring my threads would make that a lot easier.

You know, maybe if you tried handling your problems in an adult manner rather than immediately flipping out, raging on everyone and then running away with your hands over your ears you would manage to get somewhere.

Just a thought.

I do not want to have you in my thread Retro. Leave.

Uh sorry that's not really how a forum works, despite the kind of warped sense of importance topic creators seem to have here. You don't 'own' the thread, and you don't really get to order people out of it.

Also, flipping out at people is what got you muted last time. Maybe you should just chill.
