General Discussion / Re: THIS IS (insert place name)!!

Christsake. Retro, get lost.

Heh, booby.

No, he's right. This is a really old meme (that wasn't really very funny when it was a new meme) and I don't really see why it needs a whole thread to keep propagating it.

Also, do you seriously think you're the first person to make a 'this is boatmurdered' joke? Pretty sure the first one of those was made in the boatmurdered thread.[/i[

Sometimes the bad person needs to win.

Yes.

But... Disney. Their films are for children.
And sometimes children need to be taught that the good guys don't always win.

A) No, they don't. Not children that age. What age children do you think these movies are aimed at? Learning that is way more a teenager/young adult thing to learn. That's not to say their can't be conflict and loss, but 'the good guys win' is the basis of the childhood experience.
B) That's not how Disney makes it's money, it's never how they've made their money. They know exactly what side their bread is buttered on, and they will continue doing exactly

33
Well kids today are way too soft for their own good.
And their parents even worse.
So Disney is trying to adapt.. and the spiral turns another notch downwards.

They're making exactly the same stuff they always have. Just because you're looking at what you watched as a kid through rose tinted nostalgia glasses doesn't mean their stories were any less clear cut 'good defeats evil, happily ever after' than they are now. I liked Aladdin as a kid but I'm not going to claim it was a soul searing piece exploring the rich depth of middle eastern history and the profound moral choices presented by someone tempted by being offered limitless power.

If you want an exploration of adult issues, go watch a film aimed at adults

I am so freaking pissed off at Disney right now.
So much that it isn't even funny.
Really, at this point the whole company is dead to me right now. Sure they can make a few good movies, but the company is DEAD to me.

What did they do this time?
I finally take the time to listen to some of their shows for once...
And all I can say is EVERYTHING.
I mean fuck, an episode of that wizard show, they spend the ENTIRE time being all definite on good vs evil, all like there is ALWAYS a definate line between the two, and as if they couldn't piss me off more, ALL of the damn protagonists go ahead and emotionally torture a group of children who they had recently turned to fruit by threatening them with a painful death! I mean fuck, this is obscene! And that's just one episode...

Are... are you serious? You realise their stuff is aimed at children, right? Why would you go into a Disney film expecting anything /but/ a clear delineation of good and evil? I dunno if you've noticed but children generally aren't known for their interest in exploring deep moral and philosophical quandaries.

edit: fix spelling error

General Discussion / Re: The most soul crushing death *Mass spoilers ahoy*

The Mist is the definition of horror.  There are so many excruciating moments in that movie it's crazy.  The ending is the darkest shit I've ever seen in a movie.  I loved every minute of it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm not a Steven King fan, but I really liked that short story so I've been wary about the movie. I might watch it now.

Don't. It's one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of bad movies. All the characters are cliche horror stereotypes turned up past the point of any believability (to the point of being offensive in the case of the crazy religious lady), and it's quite frankly boring as hell.

Why anyone would recommend it I have no idea.

ein has been muted for 5 days for posting porn.  Keep it clean people.

That's it? What would he have to do to get banned, post actual child pornography?

37
Hell no, that be a sight.

What about a superbug.

I think we will see a real superbug very soon in our life time... i dont want to create something i think will really happen.

There's already a strain of TB that's completely resistant to all the drugs we have at the moment, due to the fact that you have to be on antibiotics for a long time and they're expensive, so people in developing countries just take them until they feel better.

38
But Retro, if you don't apologise he'll never stop thinking about it! There will be no release.

39
Oh and LordNagash, this is how I react when people laugh at the fucking loneliness and hate that I feel every day of my wretched life.
Gonna take a wild stab in the dark here and guess that hey maybe you're a teenager. Surprise! Everyone feels that way.

Retro, this is how I am when I'm talking to lesser beings. Get over it. mnjiman, get away from me before I set you on fire.

Also I'd like to point out that maybe the reason you're so alone is that any time someone disagrees with you, you flip out and threaten to physically injure/murder them? Could be a helpful clue. Referring to other people as 'lesser beings' because they don't like you probably isn't helping either.

Being me is surprisingly easy once you get past the fact that I can never stop thinking. Ever. There is no release. I actually worked out how religions that feature an afterlife are responsible for global warming and how monogamy is the reason we aren't all incredibly good-looking.

oh look more internet fellows talkin' bout how totally brilliant yet dark and impossible to understand and differentthey are via stupid boasts never seen that before

on topic, i would eat a lot.

Go away. You do not belong here. At all. You do not belong near other humans. You are a piece of human trash, and you need to get over it.

Wow, calm down buddy. Is that how you react whenever anyone dares to question that you are a unique and special snowflake?

Retro, I think you struck a nerve. You may of hurt its feelings. It seems offended. I might be wrong though. Maybe we should give it a hug?

Maybe I should remove both your testicles with a rusty hacksaw and then feed them to you both.

Welp, apparently it is.

General Discussion / Re: Marijuana:Should it be legalized?

Easy for you to say, when you don't have a stutter.

... Speaking as someone who does have a (very mild) stutter and used to have one so intense that I literally couldn't talk, there are easier ways to get rid of it than marijuana.  Really.  I've helped a friend get over hers, too, so my techniques aren't just a one-shot thinger.

(Of course, this isn't scientific proof, nor do I say that I'm indicative with all people with stutters, but all the same the argument is there).

I wasn't arguing that there weren't, I was just saying that it was very easy for someone who doesn't have a stutter to flippantly declare there's 'no benefit' for something that can treat it.

in some people who stutter stop them from stuttering during that time

That doesn't sound like a benefit. In fact it is pretty sad when people have to take anti-anxiety medication as it is. To have to have one constantly administered is something else.

Marijuana, at least in my opinion, should be completely legalized. Many, many studies have shown that it has no negative effects whatsoever.

Completely wrong right off the bat. Even if you ignore anything that suggests it's a gateway drug, or the theory that it can trigger schizophrenia in people with a genetic predisposition, the mere fact you're burning something, inhaling it and holding it in your lungs for a long period of time is harmful.

You're also ignoring the societal issues which, while obviously not as bad as harder drugs like heroin or even arguably a legal drug like alcohol, are still something that has to be considered when you say something like 'has no negative effects'

Edit:

Personally, I think the decriminalization of medical marijuana is a total no-brainer (we have much worse and more dangerous drugs available by far).

I agree with this 100%. Marijuana has shown very positive effects when used medically, especially in people with serious or terminal illnesses or chronic pain.

I'm on the northeast coast of New South Wales, we're getting flood warnings here as well. Hopefully it won't come to anything, though. We've got a fairly big river here for it to drain into, and we're not getting the torrential rain they're getting in Queensland.

I have family in Queensland though, and they were supposed to come down this weekend for my grandmother's 80th surprise birthday party. Looks like that may be off.

It then descended into personal attacks, to which Toady responded fairly quickly.
I think we're fine.

Personal attacks from one person. There was no need to close the entire thread.
