Long ago Earlier this evening, in the town of Blarph, began what will someday be looked back on as the beginning of an epic war between wizard and engineer. Two masters of their respective arts fought a desperate battle for supremacy and dominance! But that's how it will be looked back on in the future. What really happened today was actually that two former college buddies, a wizard and an engineer, got into an entirely civil and polite dispute over afternoon tea and biscuits about which was better, wizarding or engineeringry. (The good biscuits, not the nasty ones that taste like butter.) And that polite dispute simply got a little out of hand.

Ok, very out of hand.

Before long, the wizard was magically shielding his hoard of conjured demons to catch the sky-full of nuclear doom missiles being launched from the engineer's army of giant steam doommecha of doom. The battle that was waged this day will be spoken of in hushed whispers for ages to come.

Or at least it would have been if anyone in the city had lived to tell about it. Most people think the city just vanished because of an angry god or something.

But you know better. For each of you are the surviving apprentices of that great wizard and engineer. The highly competent ones who had been sent away from from the crater that used to be the town of Blarph on pointless super important errands so that you wouldn't muck up yet another project that were really important. Because you were a really good apprentice! Really. Wizarding apprentices who always remembered to sweep your master's conjuring room clean of that dust that always seemed to collect in pentagram-shaped piles. The demons were always highly appreciative that you kept letting them out. Engineeringry apprentices who were so fastidious as to always clean the engineering whiteboard not only after latenight engineering sessions the night before project proposals were due for esteemed high-paying clients, but even during the coffee breaks too!

You were that good.

And now, with your master having fallen to that treacherous other wizard/engineer (he obviously must have been treacherous, because your master was awesome sauce and no way he'd have lost a fair fight to a simpering engineer/wizard) you must avenge him!

To participate:
1) Choose a faction: Wizards or Engineers.
2) Choose the extra stuff according to the explanations listed below for your chosen faction.
3) Write up a fluffy, entertaining paragraph or so detailing your character background.
4) State your character name. Any name will be accepted provided it's the same as your bay12 user name.
5) State honestly whether you're a flake who'll submit a character, play for one turn then disappear off the face of the earth.

Wizards:
Wizards choose two out of four spell disciplines. First, a discipline that they're really good at! Then, a discipline that they're really bad at. And then the other two don't need to be mentioned. They're kind of just mostly ok at those other two.

 * Burninating (Causing fire, explosions, fire, destruction and fire. Also, fire.)
 * Summoning (Asking very nicely for demons to show up and having them eagerly and enthusiastically appear because you're so charming and fun to talk to.)
 * Illusion (Making things look and sound different than how they really do. Make a cupcake look like a muffin with frosting! Is that sneaky or what?)
 * White Knighting (Protecting yourself and others from harm. Imagined or real.)

Engineers:
Engineers are totally different from wizards! Engineers have one discipline that they're really good at, and one that they're really bad at. Completely different. And the other two disciplines don't need to be mentioned during character creation, because unlike wiztards, you're mostly just ok at the other two. Ha! Take that, wizards!

 * Chemistry (Mix things and have the result be very different from any of the things you started with!)
 * Steam (Power your contraptions with really hot water!)
 * Electricality (Manipulating lightning to do things too small to do with your hands that you could totally do with your hands because you're awesome like that, but choose not to because it's cooler to use electricality to do it)
 * Metallica (Hitting metal a whole lot until it takes on really cool shapes!)

This game will be entirely freefrom, largely tongue-in-cheek, and not fair at all. Like, totally not fair. As an example of the unfairness, wizards and engineers will have a fairly significant difference in their gameplay mechanic for their wizarding and engineeringry actions. And I'm not going to tell you the difference until you've already committed to a choice. Because that's the kind of game this is.

Imagine that tomorrow, somebody invents an overunity device. Imagine that it's simple and cheap to build. For $200 in parts available from any electronic hobby supply store, anyone with the ability to read schematics, watch a youtube video and solder parts can build one in a weekend.

This device takes 100 watts of input power and in turn produces 105 watts of output.

The first guy who pipes the output to the input does it on a livestream. Immediately after he does, there's an explosion of liquid and gaseous plastic and metal and he dies from inhaling it.

It works.

What are the consequences for the human race?

(This is a continuation of Marooned in Morrowind. It is recommended that you be familiar with the original before reading here.)

Prologue

: "Hello, my little humans. Welcome to-"

: "Shut it, Tia. Nobody likes you anyway."

Celestia raises an eyebrow then takes a sip of tea.

: "I suppose you'd rather we hear this from Azura?"

: "Oh, right, like that would make any difference. Look at me, I'm Loki! Suddenly that makes everything I have to say more relevant!"

With both a bang and a whisper, Michael appears.

: "Gah! What...where am I?"

: "MICHAEL!"

: "Woofy? Hey, good to-"

The werewolf zooms up and glomps Michael.

: "...can't...breath..."

: "I missed you so much!"

: "Indeed! I missed you so much too! Oh, shall I count the ways? Fifth with an orange, negative fifteenth with an ICBM, fiftieth with a rusty glass of water-flavored jello..."

: "Very well, I suppose this is appropriate."

: "Azura!"

Azura smiles.

: "Yes, Michael."

: "...what...how..."

Michael stumbles over his words trying to figure out what question to ask. Meanwhile, the werewolf shoots one hand on the air and hops excitedly while transforming into Pinkie Pie.

: "Oh! I know what to ask! I know! I know! Ask how-"

Sheogorath grins and a gag materializes on Pinkie's face, silencing her.

: "Mfph eh dznt! ehkn ttlly stuhl tk!"

Michael glances around, the room? It's not exactly a room. There don't seem to be any walls and the floor is an indistinct mist that isn't entirely solid.

: "Pathetic. Is this really the best design you could come up with, bucket-boy?"

: "Who are you talking to? Who's 'bucketboy?'"

: "Oooohh, finally the protagonist asks a question." Q rolls his eyes. "I was beginning to think I'd have to make myself mortal and bludgeon myself to death with a sponge...AGAIN, just to keep from dying of boredom."

Michael considers the being standing before him.

: "I know who you are, Q."

Q mocks a look of great shock, then smiles with amusement.

: "Do you? Do you really know who is moi?" He raises his hands and looks up. "Then tell us! Oh, great wise one, WHO. AM. I?"

Michael frowns and doesn't answer right away.

: "Didn't think so. Now get on with it before pink fluffy over there tries to turn this into a party."

Pinkie's eyes light up and she-

: "Not on my watch."

Q snaps his fingers and Pinkie Pie disappears, along with the room, and its occupants.

All is dark.

: "In the beginning, there was light."

An alarm sounds and a dunce cap appears on Azura's head.

: "EHHH! Wrong!"

: "Are we telling this story or not, Chaos?"

The djinn raises an eyebrow, then slowly transforms into a horrific visage of eyes and mouths, with long spindly arms and legs, and a head that hangs beneath its shoulders.

: "It is early to be revealing ourselves, Light."

Azura removes the cap.

: "It's become very clear over these past two years that they won't understand unless we explain. Possibly even if we do."

Tzeentch turns back into Sheogorath.

: "Would you care to bet on that? I choose to have some small amount of faith in the mortals. At least as much as I have in 17 and 20 mustard seeds, anyway."

Shegorath pulls a frozen hot dog from his jacket and takes a crunchy bite, as Azura grows wings and becomes once again Celestia.

: "No, dear friend. I would not care to bet on it."

: "No! Back, foul monster! Not the puppy dog eyes! I'm melting!" Sheogorath shrieks, then sighs. "Oh, very well. Have it your way. I shall entertain myself elsewho. Or possibly elsewhy. Certainly no chance at all that I'll be entertained here, how or now."

Sheogorath vanishes. Celestia turns to you.

: "Hello, Michael."

: "Princess? What happened here? What was all this?"

Celestia smiles kindly on you, wraps you up in one wing and affectionately nuzzles the top of your head. You feel the top of your skull tingle as if electricity is passing through it. Your feet feel as though they've been washed.

: "It's not so very simple, my little human, my little spell, my little audience. You ask what happened 'here' but where is 'here' depends very much on 'who' you are when you view it. So what happened 'here' depends on which 'here' you mean, and that depends on whom the 'you' is who is doing the viewing. There is more to 'you' than any individual 'you' is aware." She smiles gently. "Which is why this happened."

: "I don't understand."

: "Some of you does. And some of you doesn't. Different parts of you are observing different a 'here,' and they each have a different understanding of what they perceive." she pauses. "Perhaps it would help if I broke the story up into smaller pieces, rather than try to explain all at once?"

You blink a couple times.

: "Ok."

Episode 1: Introduction
You're a freshman liberal arts student at your local community college. You're an average student, and you don't do sports. No real hobbies except the internet, games, watching My Little Pony and reading the occasional fanfic on Equestria Daily.

You just got home from a terribly dull basic algebra class. You're not sure why you were placed in it. You already know the material, but it's your first year, and that's where the matriculation tests put you. At least the homework is easy.

"Anyone home?" No answer. "Mom? Dad?"

Looks like nobody's home but you at the moment. With no particular plans, you head to your room. You sit down at your computer, turn it on and pull your college textbooks from your backpack while you wait for windows to load. It's slow. You could really use a faster computer.

Eventually windows comes up and you're staring at your favorite desktop wallpaper: an adorable picture of princesses Celestia and Luna nuzzling together before a glorious sunset. It warms your heart, but your mind is restless. What are you going to do? Homework? No...you can do it later. Maybe a game? Yeah, sure. You open up your start menu and...

...mumble...mumble...shall We...mumble...

You look around. You could of sworn you just heard a voice. You listen carefully, but you don't hear anything. Shrugging, you go back to your start menu and begin browsing though-

...but We're out of...mumble...

Your heart skips a beat. You totally heard someone talking. A female voice. You strain to hear, but all you hear is the sound of your own heartbeat. It's kind of creepy. You glance at your computer and notice that the speakers are powered on. Instantly you relax and giggle the anxiety away. Obviously your speakers were just picking up radio interference. Probably just a ham radio operator passing through the-

...mumble...what about this...mumble...

That's totally not coming from your speakers. At least you don't think it is. Curious, you reach to turn up the speaker volume when suddenly your chair drops out from beneath you and you feel yourself falling backwards. You see a blur, then sunlight in your eyes, then.

SPLASH!

Yeah. No sense denying it. You're in Morrowind.

: "I remember that. That was when I first arrived. But where was I before that? Where did I come from?"

Celestia folds her other wing around you and holds you securely in them both. It's very reassuring. Like a womb.

: "'You' weren't before that. 'You' came into existence when this forum game began."

: "Forum game? What forum game?"

: "Forgive me if I answer that indirectly. Let me tell you that exact same story as before, but from a different point of view."

Princess Celestia sat regally on the throne room. It had been a rough day, dealing with petty nobles and bureaucrats.

: Why must they create such terrible mountains of paperwork? Don't they understand-"

: "TI---AAAA! We're soooooooooooo boooorrreed! Is there nothing to DO in Equestria anymore?"

The Solar Princess smiled at her younger sister. She was very proud of how little Luna had adapted to-

: "BOOOOOOOORRRRRRRREEEEDDDD!" the purple alicorn whined, adorably stomping her forehooves on the palace floor, leaving several holes in the stone in the process

: "Oh, Lulu. If you're so eager for something to do, why not-"

: "Nay! Thou shalt NOT waste a single precious iota of Our time on that atrocious tax code of Thine! We must say, sister, hadst Thou not banished Us to the moon, a thousand years of darkness would have been the lesser evil by far!"

: "Perhaps. Well, I do have some few hours before sundown, and it's so wonderful to have you back, dear sister. Perhaps we might play a game together? Just like we used to, Lulu?"

Luna sat on her throne and regally humphed.

: "We have better things to do with Our time than waste it on mere games."

: "Like sit around and be bored?"

Luna's ears twitched.

: "Very well, We shall consider Thy proposal. What game?"

: "Chess?"

: "Nay."

: "Boulder toss?"

: "A filly's game."

: "Alfalfa monster?"

: "Thou wouldst not dare!"

A few more suggestions were made, but Luna found none of them appealing. Being an immortal alicorn, she'd had her fill of every game that her world had to offer. And so after a time, Celestia began to call upon the games of other worlds known to her.

: "When shall We give up on this fool's errand, dear sister?"

: "Not until my little Lulu is entertained. Unless you truly believe there is nothing in the entire multiverse left to amuse you."

: "Mayhaps, but We're out of other ideas."

: "Then let's continue."

: "Wait, stop. What about this? Morrowind?"

Morrowind had caught Luna's interest. And so Celestia called upon the game from her alternate universe counterpart, and cast a great spell to simulate the program code of that game.

: "Ha! Indeed this looks fun! Thank you, sister. I shall avail Myself of Your offer. No more of this ridiculous pretty princess nonsense! Just like the olden times, again shall I be the Princess of the Night! Hark! Dost Thou remember, dear sister, how friend and foe alike wet themselves in fear at the merest rumor of My coming? How the world itself shook beneath My hooves as I danced in the blood of the wicked?"

: "I remember, Lulu."

: "Huzzah! Then fear Me, mortals, for today, I am risen! Again shall I feel the crunching of charred bones beneath my hooves! Again shall I taste the blood of those who dare to stand before Me! Again shall I bathe in the viscera of-

: "Don't be up too late, Lulu. Remember you have a table manners lesson tomorrow morning. Ponies consider it rude to gore the waiter merely for the wine not being to your taste nowadays."

: "...stupid modern civilization."

And so Luna immersed herself in this new game while her sister watched, happy to see her happy . But, after a short time, a curious thing happened. The game...

...noticed that it was being played.

: "So you're saying you pirated a game from a different universe to entertain your sister? "

Celestia smiles.

: "That is one way to look at it, yes. One way among many."

: "What does that have to do with me?"

: "There is one more point of view that's essential."

LordBucket browsed through the forum games on bay12. It had been a while since he'd hosted a game. Unfortunately games in 'forum games' tended to die after a week. As often as not they survived long enough for character creation and a single turn or two before being abandoned for one reason or another. The Let's Play forum tended to be more reliable. Though posting there would mean playing an actual game rather than completely making something up. Still, that was manageable.

Glancing though the games on his computer...

: "Violated Heroine? That would be hilarious, but it would be locked fast. Xeen? A Xeen let's play would be fun. Not sure I'm in the mood for that though. Plus, it would take forever. Xeen is a really big game and it would take months, at least, to get through it. I'd rather something I can do for  couple months and be done with it."

(Somewhere in a distant universe, a chaos god laughed at his naivete)

LordBucket continued looking through his games until he came upon:

: "Morrowind? Yeah, definitely Morrowind. Actually, I jthink I have an AWESOME idea for a Morrowind Let's Play. Oh, yeah. This is...wow. That makes so much sense. We so need to do this."

Feeling inspired, LordBucket started up Morrowind, created a new character and walked around taking screenshots. Then he closed the game, opened up notepad and began typing.

: "...huh. This is really great. So much potential. I wonder where this idea came from."

: "I don't understand. Who was that?"

: "That was me."

: "What? Since when were you a human...guy?"

: Since when was the sword pushed?"

: "Vivec? Where did you come from?"

Vivec raises an eyebrow.

: "It's difficult to answer that literally. But in the sense that you mean, I've been here all along."

This is some screwy stuff.

Vivec said that he's some kind of blob of technically-hims that are connected but not in a "have conversations with each other" kind of way, as evidenced by his sword analogy. Yagrum said that for every universe, there's an infinite blend of universes diverging from that one in various ways; Fyr (not shown) more directly confirmed that by suggesting that there were probably numerous Fyrs having that conversation with numerous Michaels when we asked him, and less directly by saying it was really easy to have a world that looked completely like home except for one rather massive detail.

So it seems likely to me that "Vivec" is aware of being some kind of... "hivemind" probably isn't the word. Almost the reverse, a one-ish mind or whatever spread out over a large patch of what appear to be discrete entities in their respective dimensions; or maybe just a discrete mind that's much more heavily affected and aware of his variations than normal. He also mentioned that "you might not recognize me in all of them," which would make sense further out from "normal" or "core" Vivec where he's starting to accumulate too many differences to be immediately identifiable.

Well done, IronyOwl. But you seem to have missed the application of this:

The tomato is you. It's me. It's all of us.

Marooned in Morrowind, from it's very conception was always intended to be a Tomato in the Mirror. The game took place, is taking place, in an infinite omniverse, of which this universe that you and I and this forum game exists in is but one part of.

Everything Vivec, Divayth and Yagrum said about the nature of the universe was describing this universe just as well as theirs. This universe, that we're playing this forum game in is part of that same multiverse that Yagrum and Divayth's particular universe is also a part of. And you guys, collectively "are" the Michael that is in Morrowind. Literally, you're the "this dimension" manifestation of a multidimensional hyperbeing, of which Michael is a "that dimension" manifestation of. Just like Vivec.

: "Is there an instance of you in each of those universes?"

: "In one form or another, there must be, if I am to be aware of them. But were you to look at some of them, you might not recognize them as me."

You are aware of Michael, and he is aware of you. But were you to look at each other, you might not recognize each other as other-universe-instances of yourself.

So where do ponies come in? Well, among those infinite universes there is one particular universe, well, probably infinitely many universes, but one of them in particular, in which Celestia cast a spell recreating the game of Morrowind in her universe, and that became self aware. This forum game is a manifestation of the bleedthrough between these various universes. While it might be tempting to say that "Michael is a sentient spellform" the more accurate way of describing it is to say that there is a multi-dimensional hyperbeing that extends into multiple universes, and one of the extensions takes the form of groupmind on the bay12 forum, in another universe it takes the form of a physical being with no past who decided that his name is Michael, and in yet another universe it takes the form of a spell that became sentient.

There is no basis upon which to evaluate any of these universes as "more valid" than another.

Throughout this entire game, "you the players" have been growing to become aware of your combined hyperdimensional self, of which "Michael in Morrowind" and "spellform in Equestria" and presumably countless other other-universe-selves are  also another part, eacj of which also growing to become more aware of its same hyperdimensional self. You've each been seeing your self through a lens. "You" have been becoming aware of your self through the experience of viewing Morrowind through this forum game, and "you" have been becoming aware of yourself through the experience of viewing this world by communicating with the voices in Michael's head, and "you" have been becoming aware of yourself through the process of ponies interacting with your essence as the game they perceive "you" to be.

Vivec referred to the voices in Michael's head as his "higher self," and throughout this game, nearly every episode there's been a regular narrative shift back and forth between the first and second person point of view.

That was intentional.

Because each of you individually, the "hivemind" that is your presensc on bay12, Michael in Morrowind, and the spellform in Equestria are all ultimately components of the same hyperbeing. Just like Vivec. His components simply started out with greater awareness of each other. And just like Chaos/Sheogorath/Eris/Loki/Discord. All components of the same hyperbeing.

Even me, the GM, I am not exempt. Here in this universe, my manifestation is me, the human, ffelsh and blood, the Gamemaster of Marooned in Morrowind. But the hyperdimensional entity of which I am part, is also composed of Azura, the narrator/goddess/daedra who sets the game of Morrowind in motion. And in Equestria, of Celestia, the caster of the spell that is the game being played by Luna.

Also known as THE PONY IN LORDBUCKET'S AVATAR I MEAN COME ON

LordBucket was the instigator of this forum game. Azura was the instigator of Morrowind. Celestia was the instigator of the spell. For "Marooned in Morrowind" itself is a hyperdimensional entity, and "we" are its creator. This game exists and has this entire time been played in many dimensions, that of my own personal computer, that here on this web forum, that of the spellform in Equestria, and that of the Morrowind narrated by the daedra Azura...and presumably many others.

Which has some interesting implications.

Quote
It would be like finding out at the very end of Game of Thrones that Darth Vader was somehow pulling all of the strings.

Reread Conversations With Vivec.

Compare and contrast what Vivec said with what Divayth and Yagrum said.

Consider the implications.

Divayth and Yagrum both explained how this works. Yagrum went into great detail.

: "Oblivion is basically infinite, and takes up infinitely many dimensions. Well, maybe not literally infinite, but close enough as to not matter. Anything that's possible, exists. Imagine your entire universe where you come from, except one bit of...we'll use your model, one atom in your nose is different. That universe with a single different atom exists and is just as valid as the universe you're from. Now imagine that universe except the atom to the left of that other atom is different instead. And so on for every atom in the entire universe. All of those universes exist."

"Obviously, that means a lot of universes are very similar. In fact, every universe is similar to an effectively infinite number of other universes, because every universe that exists has a universe that's just like it except one atom is different, a universe that's just like it except two atoms are different, all the way up to every atom in the universe. Again, maybe not literally infinite...but close enough for all practical purposes. Especially since the number of atoms in each universe isn't fixed. So after you've counted up all those other universes, start in with universes that are identical to each of them except they have one extra atom somewhere, then two extra, etc. "

"So, not only are a lot of universes similar to other universes, the ways in which universes can be similar is effectively infinite, too. If you imagine all possible universes existing at 90 degrees to each other, any possible pair of universes could be described as existing at a particular 90 degree angle and at a certain distance from one another. And other universes at different positions along that axis will also be similar. When I say 'cultural axes' I'm simply referring to axis sets of universes that are similar in terms of culture."

Of course this universe is part of "all possible universes." But so are all others.

It would be like finding out at the very end of Game of Thrones that Darth Vader was somehow pulling all of the strings.

Star Wars is also part of "all possible universes." And so is Game of Thrones. And so is every other fictional universe, every possible fictional universe and every possible variation of those universes.

Certainly you could have met Darth Vader in this game if it had taken that direction.

You did after all meet Q in game. And Loki. And Eris. All individual-universe-instances of the the very essence of Chaos that was using this forum game as a channel through which to speak to you here in this particular universe, just as it was speaking to Michael in his. Speaking to you both, for you are each the same entity.

He was talking to you as much as he was talking to Michael. As well as countless other other-universe manifestations of the hyperbeing that you and Michael are part of, but that you simply haven't become aware of in the manner that forum player you/Michael you/sentient spellform you have become aware of each other. There are infinitely many of possible yous in yet other universes that you might have become aware of.

So, that's what was going on here. The Tomato Is You. And The Tomato Is me. We're All Tomatos.

You/Michael are a multidimenionsal hyperbeing. Just like Vivec. Just like Chaos/Sheogorth/Loki/Eris/etc. Just like LordBucket/Azura/Celestia/Ra/Amaterasu/etc. the bringer of light and enlightenment. And just like the game itself, played on a computer, on a forum and in a spell.

Everything is a Tomato.

General Discussion / Gender trumps results. Who has it worse?

Adam and Bob are both guys. Christina and Debbie are both girls. All four of them embark on identical art projects.

Adam spends five minutes slapping something hastily together. The result is ugly. But nobody cares, because he's a guy so so what?

Bob invests a great deal of time and effort into the project, and his results are pleasing and impressive. But nobody cares, because he's a guy so so what?

Christina spends five minutes slapping something hastily together. The result is ugly. She is lavished with attention and compliments because she's a girl. Nobody cares about her project.

Debbie invests a great deal of time and effort into the project, and her results are pleasing and impressive.  She is lavished with attention and compliments because she's a girl. Nobody cares about her project.

Rank from who has it best to who has it worst. Explain why.

Imagine that you were transported back to pre-stone age conditions. There are other humans, but they're naked, picking fruit and sleeping under trees.

How well would you do? Sure, maybe you know how to build complicated circuits out of logic gates, but could you do it without already having diodes or transistors to work with? Sure, maybe you could build a turbine and electric motor, but could you do it without wire and magnets to start with? Sure, maybe you even know how to build a clay furnace. But would you recognize a metal ore if you saw one? How about something simple, some technology that's thousands of years old, like alcohol. Maybe you know all about brewing beer. Would you be able to make beer without being able to go to the store and buy yeast? Would you be able to build a container to put it in? Would you be able to start a fire to cook it?

There you are. You have rocks and sticks and dirt.

How far could you go?

Would you even survive your first month?

Play With Your Buddies / Let's Play 5by5craft: Episode 5
« on: June 09, 2015, 05:51:09 am »

So I've decided to try my hand at a minecraft youtube video series. If all goes according to plan I'm be uploading one video a week. Hopefully the next one takes half as many hours to publish as this one did. It took over ten hours to produce a six minute video. So, apologies if episode 1 is a little rough. It will probably get better. Watch to the end for the bay12 shoutout.

For those wondering about the name change, I wanted my youtube channel and minecraft character name to match, and apparently somebody already took LordBucket.*shrug*

Episode list
Episode 1: The hunt for (0,0)
Episode 2: Building with Hermaphroditic Sheep
Episode 3: Stores and pumpkins and dragons, oh my!
Episode 4: Pigmen and tunnel design
Episode 5: Brightest pyramid in minecraft ever

About the server
5by5craft is a whitelisted (mostly) vanilla minecraft server running with a fresh 1.8 world reset on June 1st, with a 6000x6000 tile map inside a fixed world border. Coreprotect and LWC are active, and pvp is consensual only.

 * Redditpage
 * Dynmap

Feedback is welcome. As are praise and bribes. I accept cashier's checks, gold bullion and virgins. I know there are some audio issues with the video. Seriously...ten hours.

Also, anyone who wants to join me on the server, feel free to submit a whitelist request on reddit. New server only a week old, haven't even killed the dragon yet. And the previous map reset lasted nearly two years, so if you like vanilla this is a good chance to get in early on a server that's likely to last a while.

This is a silly little game.

It made me smile.

The Secret of Magic

Since I'm now officially stalling for the next Marooned in Morrowind update, I've decided to try a forum game premise that I've been toying with for a while. Please read this before signing up. This is not going to be a casual game, and I want players who will learn it and stick with it. Player will be selected from applicants, not given first-come-first-serve, so don't feel like you need to reserve a spot immediately. Game #1 will be only four players and if the pace is reasonably fast, Game #2 might be more. So even if you're not selected, follow the thread if you're interested.

Basic game genre:

Magic themed pvp with perma-death, goal is to eliminate other players. There will be a map. Gameplay will involve moving around on the map, developing your character, building permanent structures on the map, engaging in and avoiding combat with other players, all while juggling a couple of Global effects that affect the magic system in ways that will variously be helpful or detrimental to some or all players. If this system works and people like it, there will be a "king of the hill" persistent upgrade in the form of benefits that may be carried over between games. Win one game, and you'll receive a benefit in the next, while simultaneously becoming a target for other players. This is not a game that is played forever. This is a game where you kill everybody else and win, and then the next game begins. Maps and players may change between games. (And possibly rules and spells, should gameplay reveals balance issues.)

The experimental format: Action points with linear turn processing by forum post order
It's a common problem in forum games that different players are online at different times and frequencies. Sometimes a couple players are on but one isn't, meaning that everybody has to wait for the missing player to do anything. Sometimes players are on but the GM isn't, meaning that everybody has to wait for turns to be processed before they can do anything. This system is an attempt to reduce these difficulties, and in a way that creates what will hopefully be an interesting pvp mechanic. Here's how it works:

 * Turns will be processed in the order that they are posted.
 * Players accumulate "action points" and may use any number of their allowable actions at any time, over single or multiple posts.
 * No editing posts. Any post that is edited will result in both turn forfeiture and loss of all action points at the time of the post.
 * When turns are processed, action points regenerate for all players equally, up to a base cap 5. This means that if you used up all your actions but some body else didn't, you won't be allocated the full five immediately. You'll be allocated however many it takes to get at least one player up to 5.
 * Should the game ever be "waiting" on a single player who has 5 action points available while everyone else has zero, the GM may allocate action points anyway, causing the missing player to go above the cap. This means that while a single player can't completely hold up the game, neither does anybody need to worry too much about falling behind just because they took a day off. However, doing this is at the GM's discretion, and under no circumstances will any player's Action point total ever be allowed to exceed 10. Any points allocated above ten are simply lost. Exceeding the cap is intended for player convenience and to accommodate varying schedules and that whole Real Life(tm) thing that some people have. Deliberately manipulating the cap to gain advantage is frowned on, but, players should be advised that it can legitimately happen, and a player right next to you sitting on a bunch of action points is potentially more dangerous than a player who lacks them.
 * Turns will be processed indiscriminately and at any time by the GM

I have attempted to make the rules clear, and to eliminate game-breaking holes or inconsistencies. But this game is complicated, and it's possible I might have missed something. Game #1 is a test. If there are rule problems, I will attempt to reconcile them. If anyone has questions, ask away. I'll give it a day or two before I pick players and start. Note that if anybody points out glaring problems that I've missed, changes might be made between now and game start.

Actions

Players may issue turn "commands" for their character by spending Action Points. You may spend or not spend any number of AP up to your current total in any sequence. There is no "turn order." Some actions might require additional information. A target, a location, a number of times to be used, etc. For clarity, please specify the number of AP being spent in brackets. For example:

[3]Meditate
[2]Rest

...means to use three AP meditating and 2 resting, which would (probably) would restore 9 mana and 6 health.

[4]Move to 25

Means to move to location 25. But sometimes a path might need to be specified. For example, looking at the map below, there's only one path of that length from location 29 to location 25. The GM knows the path the player is taking. In some cases there might be multiple paths. If the player were at location 17, for example, he would need to specify:

[4]Move (16,15,21,25)

That way the GM knows which route he's taking. Sometimes it could make a difference.

The Map, and Terrain Features
(Note: this map may see revisions between now and game start)

Circles are locations. Lines between circles show which locations are connected, and thus may be moved to. Castle are castles. Hammer and pick are mines. Starbursts are mana springs. Note Location 17 in the middle has both a mine and a mana spring.

Quarries that are claimed generate 1 stone every time the GM allocates an action point to players during a turn update. That stone remains at the location and must be manually carried back to a castle to be used for upgrading.

Mana springs that are claimed increase the mana regeneration rate of their owners when they meditate, regardless of where they are on the map.

Castles are personal fortresses belonging to players. Every player starts with a level one castle that is defended by a complimentary castle guardian conjured entity. Castles provide a number of benefits, are the only place where spell research may take place, and can be captured just like any other location.

Conjured entities
Certain spells may place conjured entities at locations. Only one entity may exist per location. Conjured entities at map locations will have their owner marked. For example:

Location 7: Earth Elemental (Arcturus)(20 health, 4 defense, 5 attack, fire immunity)

Conjured entities do not prevent player movement, but they do prevent claiming that location by other players. Additionally, conjured entities that have attacks will automatically attack any player other than their owner that enters the location, and will attack again for every action taken by that player while in the location. Additionally, any attacks on their owner while in that same location will be re direrected to the entity.Conjured entities may only be placed if the location is owned by the caster.

Claiming and Fortifying locations
Locations may be claimed by players to gain the benefits of that location and any terrain feature on it. In general, to claim a location, move to that location, remove any hostile conjured entities that are there, and then engage in a Claim action, and spend a number of action points. Every AP spent claiming will either reduce the Fortification level held by another player if that player has the location fortified, or will increase the Fortification level of that location in your favor. A Location with zero fortification is considered to be unowned. A location with any positive value of fortifiction considered by owned by a player.

Note that:

 * Note that an Enhance Spell Range + Fortify/Claim spell combo does allow claiming of a location from an adjacent location.
 * Under no circumstances may a location be claimed while a hostile conjured entity is at that location. Enhance Spell Range + Claim does not overcome this limitation. Friendly conjured entities (conjured by you) do not prevent claiming by you.
 * The presence of you or another player in the same location does not prevent you or them from engaging in claim actions on that location.

Different locations have a maximum capacity of Fortification, dependent on the terrain feature present.

Nothing: 5 points
Quarry: 10 points
Mana Spring: 10 points
Quarry+Spring: 20 points
Castle: points equal to the level of the castle times 10. A level 1 castle = 10 points, level 2 = 20, etc.

Character creation

We will be using bay12 user names for character names. This game is complicated enough without needing to consult charts to see who is who.

Every character starts the game with an unenchanted dagger, unenchanted robe, a level 1 castle and a bag of holding with infinite capacity.

Characters start with 20 chargen points to distribute as desired among the following stats.

Health   (Hit points keep you alive. Every point here is worth 5hp. Note that you start with a free +10 from your castle.)
Melee      (Physical attack bonus. 1:1)
Defense   (Physical defense bonus. 1:1)
Mana      (Used to power spells. Every point spent here is worth 5 mana. Note that you start with a free +10 from your castle.)
Magic      (This is a temporary chargen-only stat used to purchase spell orders. See below.)

Every point of stat costs points equal to the new level, and point costs are cumulative. For example, increasing from 0 to 1 costs 1 point, increasing from 1 to 2 costs 2 and increasing from 0 to 2 costs 3. No points may be kept in reserve.Stats may begin the game at zero.

After spending chargen points, Magic points may then be used to purchase starting spell orders using the same sort math as above: every order of of spells costs magic points equal to its level. First order costs 1 magic, second order costs an addition 2 for a total of three, etc. Note that after character creation, magic stat isn't used for anything. It's purely for purchasing starter spells.

Spoiler: Sample character (click to show/hide)

Magic
Spells are divided into four schools:

 * Geomancy - for altering and interacting with the game map
 * Enchanting - used to create and modify tools and artifacts
 * Elemental - spells involving the elemental of earth, air fire or water.
 * Sorcery - schools that primarily concern magical forces rather than material objects

Each spell school posses five orders of spells, of increasing difficulty. "Magic" points applied at character creation may be used to gain access to each order, and additional spells may be unlocked during gameplay.

Spell types: Instant, Passive, Global

Instant spells immediately affect their target.

Passive spells may be applied to a target. Sometimes the caster, sometimes another character, or an npc. Passive effects remain in play until a certain condition occurs. For example, a passive shield might absorb an attack and then dissipate. In general, passive spells may not be stacked for additional effect.

Global spells, once cast, have game-wide effects that remain until the spell is successfully removed from play, either by killing the caster or via the level 5 Sorcery spell, Disjunction.

Combat
Combat is a relatively simple affair. Use action points to cast spells or engage in melee with a suitable target. For example,

Quote
Arcturus:
[2]Move to 14
[1]Attack Baelphegor
[1]Cast Flame Dart on Baelphegor

When the turn is processed, we might see:

Quote
Turn update

Arcturus moves to location 14, attacks Baelphegor for 1 damage, the casts Flame Dart for 2 damage. Arturus is now at (7/10)

Damage types: physical, fire, frost

Physical damage is done by hitting someone, with or without a weapon. Anyone may engage in physical attacks on any target in the current location, and they consume no mana. Physical attack damage is reduced by the defense stat. Most conjured entities do physical damage. Most attack spells do fire damage.

Your Castle, Spell Research, Upgrading and You
Every player starts the game with a level 1 castle that they control with the full 10 points of Fortification and a complimentary Castle Guardian entity to reduce the chance of castle rushes. Castles provide a number of benefits:

 * Spell research can only be conducted at a castle
 * They may be used to safely store stone and "in process" spell research
 * They provide a bonus to Rest and Meditate actions equal to their level
 * Every level of castle in your possession adds +10hp and +10mana to your total.

Important: your castle can be claimed by another player just like any other location and players can own more than one castle. Hp/mana gains are cumulative. A player who owns multiple castles will receive gains from all of them.

Spell school research may only be performed at a castle that you own. Every player starts with a level 1 castle, and may therefore research first order spells from every school, if they so wish. Every order of spell research costs 10 action points, 10 mana and 10 stone per level. For example, if you already know Geomancy(1), then learning Geomancy(2) will require 20 each, action points mana and stone.

The level of the research is limited by the level of the castle. For example, at a level 1 castle you may perform spell research for first order spells, at a level 2 castle you may perform spell research for second order spells, etc. See spell research.

Incomplete spell research will remain on the castle as a lootable item. If a castle is captured with research in process, the new owner may resume that research, but it is not possible to learn "skip" spell orders, so research acquired in this way will beapplied to the lowest unknown order of the particular spell school. Once research is applied, it is removed as a lootable item.

Full Spell List
Unless specified, spells can only be used on targets at the caster's location.

Questions/suggestions/signups?

Again, note: this is experimental. Rules, spells, the map etc. may be subject to adjustments between now and game start, and actual gameplay may reveal issues that require adjusting even after the game has begun. I realize it could be inconvenient to develop your character in a way based on rules that later need to be adjusted...but again, this is an unusually complicated ruleset. Please understand if adjustments are required.

General Discussion / Tesla Motors 10kwh home battery for $3500
« on: May 01, 2015, 12:42:57 am »

www.teslamotors.com/powerwall

The news
So after a week or two of anticipation, it turns out that the Tesla Motors announcement was exactly what everybody expected it to be: a wall-mounted home battery to allow solar powered homes to go completely off grid by storing electricity generated during off-peak hours and using them through the night, when solar generation doesn't happen...because the planet's in the way.

$3500 for 10kw hours or electricity. Scalable. Up to 9 units can be snapped together for up to 90kwh of storage. As well as an industrial capacity unit with 100kwh of storage that they claim is inifinitly scalable. According to the video they already have an order for a 250 MEGAwatt hour installation, and there was discussion of using this to provide overnight backup power for entire cities.

Why does this matter?

One of the main weaknesses of solar panels is that they only generate power when light is hitting them. The sun is below the horizon for a lot of hours every day, and even when it's visible, peak usage hours are not the same as peak generation hours. And simply feeding the excess into the grid, while doable...is problematic, and not entirely scalable. The current grid is simply not designed to accommodate the way solar provides it power.

This potentially solves that problem.

Personally I think this is a reasonable solution. But I think it's a little early. For a long time, the bigger problem with solar has not been capability, it's been cost. Home solar systems still routinely cost $20,000 or more. Whereas the average home monthly electrical bill is only in the $80-$200 range. Even if you live in an expensive state like Hawaii, with a $190/month average, it can still take over a decade to break even on solar. In a more typical case it might be 20 years, close to the warranty period on most panels.

Solar still needs to be cheaper.

That said, it will become cheaper, and having a solution to the grid problem is helpful. This is probably a good move. Though it might take a few more years before it becomes very popular. If Swanson's law continues to hold, and the price of solar continues to drop by 20% for every doubling of total installations, that $20,000 installation will be $10280. At current rates, total worldwide installations are doubling slightly less often than every two year. About two and a quarter. So ~7 years to reduce costs in half. And if we're lucky, cheap and convenient batteries like Tesla's will speed up the installation rate. Even so, $10,000 plus $3500 will still take ten years to pay for itself in a more average-cost state like Florida or Nevada, and even longer in a cheap state like California.

I think we still have some years before this really takes off. But, it is coming.

First the mildly exciting news:

http://nextbigfuture.com/2015/04/eagleworks-nasa-updated-emdrive-models.html
http://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/31ryfb/eagleworks_nasa_updated_emdrive_models_show/

There's a design for one of these devices based on observed results that they're anticipating would generate 2000 newtons of force for ~100kw input. I did the math. Acclerting to the halfway point, then turning around and slowing down for the second half of the trip, that works out to roughly 15 days to Mars at minimum distance assuming a ship with the mass of a 72 seat schoolbus, with a 45x45 foot array of solar panels. And no reason you couldn't use multiple thrusters if you can power them. We're talking an order of magnitude that means not only is regular commercial travel to Mars on the table, even personal 1-2 man craft to Mars may be realistic. Magnetrons are OLD technology that we know very well. They're the thing in microwave ovens that produce microwaves. The emdrive is basically a really big one of those in a metal tube with a particular shape. There's no need for them to be particularly expensive.

Now the crazy exciting news:

http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=36313.1860

Nobody really seems to know how or why these things work. Well, apparently a couple weeks ago somebody at NASA noticed that the measurements they were getting on one of their tests looked very familiar for some reason. And apparently the reason looked familiar was that they were the predicted results for an Alcubierre warp drive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive

So thinking that maybe this thing works because it's warping space, they did a test where they fired a couple lasers at various points and measured how long it took for the beams to arrive. Light travels at slightly different speed depending on the density of the medium it's traveling through. Heat changes the density of air, so a certain amount of variation in the travel times were expected. The amount of variation they measured was 40 times what they expected:

http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=36313.0;attach=825622;image

It's possible we might be on the verge of faster than light travel.

A more precise test is planned for this summer.

And hey, even if we're not about to become an interstellar civilization, casual interplanteary travel is pretty cool too.

Other Games / Idling to Rule the Gods
« on: April 21, 2015, 01:35:41 am »

So since we've had a bunch of threads for idle games lately, here's my favorite of all time: Idling to Rule the Gods.

It's complex, it has lots of math, it has a number of fundamental game concepts that aren't introduced until you've been playing for days or weeks, and there's generally a lot more to it than most idle games.

So give it a try. Ask questions.

So it's looking like 2015 will be the year that VR goes mainstream. It's been a year since Facebook bought Oculus Rift, annoying a lot of kickstater funders, but also putting billions of dollars of backing and incentive into VR development. For a long time it was looking like facebook would be the leader in VR, followed next by Sony's Project Morpheus. The primary difference being that the RIft was primarily intended for PC, wheres Morpheus would be for consoles.

But then a few weeks ago HTC and Valve announced the Vive headset. Which is interesting because it makes a fundamentally different assumption that the Rift and Project Morpheus. Rather than assuming that a user will be sitting in a chair with a standard gaming controler, Vive assumes that you have an up to 15x15 foot empty room, and comes with wall-mountable cameras to track your location in the room and a pair of motion detecting handsets. While Morpheus and Rift attempt to be VR headsets,  Valve's Vive headset attempts to be a Star Trek holodeck. Complete with the promise that a 15x15 foot space is large enough to trick you into thinking it's much larger through clever use of turns. And the ability to have multiple people in the same room all participate in the same simulation because the tracking cameras can track multiple headsets. And incidentally, also solves the infamous motion sickness problem. Why? Because when you push a controller forward and see youreslf move forward but your body doesn't actually move, the fluids in your inner ear and feeding you sensory data that disagrees with what the headset is feeding your eyes. But creating a visual experience, but allowing actual real of your body to match, that problem is solved.

But Valve's design does come with a few quirks. How many people have 15x15 empty rooms to game in? Sure, the cameras work perfectly well if confined to a smaller space, but what about pets and coffee tables? Vive's software apparently puts up a visible effect to warn you of objects, but probably more than a few people will be banging their shins into things while gaming. And how many gamers are going to want to spend hours of gaming time walking around? Meanwhile the Rift seems to intended for more specific types of simulations.A cockpit or driving simulator for example, where it's expected that you would be seated. Like Eve Valkyrie, for example. While Vive can do that too, it also does things Rift can't: create a more fully immersive experience. Sitting in a chair and pushing a controller forward is not going to be as immersive as actually walking forwards. But then, can Valev's controllers compete with the Nimble Sense hardware acquireed by facebook, that allows you to interact with your hands directly without a controller at all? And while room wide positional tracking is something the Vive is built for, the Rift can do that too, though not particularly well.

And then with have Microsoft Hololens, supported by default with the upcoming release of Windows 10, complete with yoru own personal virtual assistant, Cortana. Microsoft's hololens demos seem impressive, but they're not exactly the same as the other hardware up for discussion. While Rift, Morpheus and Vive are intending to create virtual reality simulations, Hololense is intending to create an augmented reality experience, where the virtual aspects sit on top of the background rather than replace it. While interesting, it's been my observation that Microsoft never does anything right on day one. Their usual model seems to be to release terrible products and then refine them over years until they gradually dominate. Their choice to have minecraft be a flagship AR game, for example, seems especially suspect. But Microsoft is good with the long game, and their domination of the operating market is likely to give them an advantage.

And finally, worthy of mention for those who won't be spending several hundred dollars on a headset and who happen to already have cellphones or tablets with motion tracking, is google cardboard. Build it at home, pop in your device, and voila! Instant VR.

Personally? Morpheus doesn't interest me. I'm a PC gamer. Rift seems great, but I dislike facebook, and the immersion of being able to walk around with the Vive appeals to me. At the same time, the Nimble Sense hardware seems superior to Valve's handsets which remind me of wii controllers. And Hololense? I think Microsoft doesn't get it. But in a few years they might have caught on and overtaken everyone. We'll see.

So when will all these devices be available? Google cardboard is available right now, if you have a cardboard box handy. Oculus Rift developer's kits have been available for a while, and a commerical release of the Rift is anticipated by Winter of 2015. Vive? By the end of 2015. Morpheus? Not until 2016. But if you're exclusively a console gamer, it might be worth the wait. Hololens? No official release date yet, but developer versions are anticipated in July 2015, and with a promised 2015 release of windows 10 so it would come as no surprise if the hardware were released this year as well. If we're fortunate, we'll have a lot of choices by Christmas 2015.

And 2016 is going to be a very interesting year in VR.

Write your answer before you read how other people responded. Feel free to reflect afterwards.

Scenario one:

Adam and Bob are neighbors who live across the street from one another. Adam lives in a beautiful 3 story mansion and Bob lives in a cardboard box.

One day while out for a walk, Adam sees Bob rummaging through a trashcan for food. He says nothing, and continues walking.

That night, Adam eats wine and caviar, and feeds filet mignon to his dog. Bob goes to bed hungry.
