Not always, you can get one or two at low skill levels. Flasks and waterskins are always generated three at a time, not sure if there are any others.

Really?  I never knew that, actually.

Could be worse, you could have 74 dwarves of whom 37 are children...there are production orders several years old that haven't been touched because we only have 24 adult laborers.  The rest are soldiers.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Awesome Artifact Names?
« on: April 22, 2011, 03:28:46 pm »
One of the children just made a gypsum crown named "The Trouble of Groups".  Considering he's a middle child in a family of nine kids, it's not surprising...

Another good one in my fort is "Crowdsilenced the Umbra of Artifacts"...another gypsum crown.  Considering it's the least valuable or noteworthy of all of our artifacts, I question the creator's modesty.  Either that or he thought up the name before making the artifact and is now profoundly embarrassed.

What it is with legendary gypsum crafts and this fort, I don't really know.

a six-headed merchant with six-headed beasts and six-headed loads.

Or maybe just a siege.

Our civilization IS named The Sizzling Merchant and its emblem is a pair of brine haunts, after all.

Finally dealt with the five or so liaisons who accumulated in our fort over the past few years because the duchess never bothered to meet with them...there are going to be six simultaneous trade agreements.  I'm not sure what this will mean for the caravan next year.

I think right now we haven't had one in about five years; all things told, we've only lost 15 dwarves in (now) 16 years.

Not at all...in 15 years I've only lost 15 dwarves of whom 6 were soldiers.  In fact, I don't think we've lost anyone in a few years now.

I suppose someone has to say it...The Fellowship of the Ring.  I mean, Moria's almost the original Boatmurdered.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Food Industry Design
« on: April 18, 2011, 12:08:03 pm »
I usually use a vertical column approach; generally speaking, it's not difficult at all to build a more than sufficient food production system in a couple of z-layers; clustering them around the main staircase means the distance from the workshops to the dining hall is pretty minimal.  Specialized stockpiles help with the flow as well...simply adding a custom seeds stockpile in my current fort drastically improved productivity.  I want to experiment with a production line approach to maximize throughput; I have some plans for an overhaul now that we're more than supplied enough to last until the new system is functioning.

I also usually intersperse them with other relevant workshops to ensure a steady supply of barrels/pots, e.g. carpenters and craftsdwarves.

That's funny, mine is named Winterbreach.  It has 50k magnetite. I am building a giant iron monument. Beneath it will be a dwarven cavern city submerged entirely in magma.

Freezing climate, 50,000 magnetite...sounds like you've got a dwarven version of Magnitogorsk.  The iron monument would be very appropriate.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Foot wounds!
« on: April 17, 2011, 03:22:45 pm »
My guess is there's a fairly high chance of injuring the foot even if you have armor; swinging a mace or war hammer is going to wreck their feet, masterwork armor or not...

The left foot does seem to get hit more often; maybe most enemies are right handed so their motions would mostly go left-to-right especially with blunt weapons.  In fact, the left side in general tends to be hit more often although that could just be anecdotal experience on my part.

I set it up for healthcare, mostly.

My fort's named Halltraded, so it's pretty prophetic considering our exports in recent years have mostly consisted of goblinite gathered from the main hallway.

To top it off, our local group is named The Sizzling Merchant and our symbol is a group of brine haunt demons.  I think we need to relocate the trade depot a few dozen z-levels downward sometime soon...

Well, they are dwarves. ;)

Well played.

At least it's not like the last time when I took away the "multiple litter rare" tag from them...

1. My fort is now 50% children.  In a few years this will correct but until then we're short on people.

2. Everything is so messy and there's so much junk all over the place I don't think anyone has done any real, actual work in around two years.  Other than hauling, that is.
