DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Building the mortuary temple component of the King's pyramid tomb and working through the massive backlog of forging jobs in order to start operating them more effectively.

I think it might be even more basic, probably related to how the embark screen and request screen show two types of each fish but without specifically differentiating their genders.  Of course, that doesn't explain why there's no dwarves that have "she prefers to consume he", despite what a wonderful innuendo it could be.

A true dwarven baby is born liking liquor and hating fire snakes.

I think "she prefers to consume she" may be a preference that has to do with fish, based on an observation that the dwarf with this preference always seemed to consume nothing but cave fish/lobster roasts and the like.

The Attic of Dance's symbol is beds, not even masterfully done.  At least my local group has a diamond as its symbol...for some reason, my local dwarves picked the "Labor of Sabres" as their group name, one of my squads is named "Kin of Mountains", and our fort is named "Basinhall".  Incredibly dwarven names from a civilization whose name is the Attic of Dance and whose symbol is beds.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: My artifacts are getting worse and worse

One of my most recent artifacts was a morganite armor stand worth 108,000, the highest to date...I haven't noticed any difference in the quality of my artifacts going on 10 years now.  It's possible they'll get even better now that we've got adamantine lying around.  I think in your case it may be a byproduct of a maturing fort; more dwarves mean more dwarves with crappy preferences and more junk lying around, which probably increases the chance that what they grab might be less valuable than in prior moods.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Need help with my mayor

Population may need to be higher; honestly, the mayor seems to appear randomly once you hit some threshold of population/wealth.

Now, in regards to the baron/count/duke, I know how to get them 100% of the time, so if you have trouble with that just let me know.

When one of my starting seven at the current fort Basinhalls died.  He was a legendary miner with nary a negative trait to his name and lots of friends and two loyal dogs as pets...but he fell prey to a forgotten beast let in due to his careless mining near our magma forges.  Even against the odds he still wounded it enough for a soldier in the area to take it down.

After that, I told the king to fuck off and dig his own tomb...Rakost Stakeblunted belongs in that one I built.

Tigermen.  I buy them from elves and liberate them all, allowing them to live out their lives socializing in the main hall with the dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: So, any trick to get a Dungeon Master?
« on: August 21, 2010, 11:24:39 am »
That's what I'm working on right now.  I got the baron-count-duke chain figured out and I should be getting the king soon; I think the arrival of the dungeon master might have something to do with the arrival of the king, but I'm not sure.  There's nothing in the raws that suggest it, but it's clear you need at least a baron for it to happen.  Back in 40d I believe it required a "feature" like a river or magma, but since this entire system has been revamped for 0.31 it's probably irrelevant.

I should be getting the king soon, so after that I'll keep an eye out for the dungeon master and the other nobles.

Yeah, legendary mechanics are great because they can crank out some pretty valuable mechanisms with only stones as input.  From there it's no problem boosting room value.

The noble research project is ongoing...up to the duchess with the king on the way.  Nobody else has showed up yet, but they may be contingent upon the arrival of the king.

I'll also need to take care of some humans after their diplomat mysteriously died on my embark (and his replacement showed up, successfully met with the baron, and left...).  Other than that, just cranking out wealth and upgrading my troops with adamantine armor.

Except for fleshballs, whose prefstrings include "calming roundness" and "warmth".  Maybe they're the underground cousins of fluffy wamblers. And then there's blood men.  Even their description is creepy as hell...

It would be interesting for dwarves to also be corrupted by spending too much time in the underworld.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Chances of 3 Forgotten Beasts?
« on: August 20, 2010, 04:35:48 pm »
Forgotten beasts have a tendency to show up like that when your fort is cranking out wealth, so if you settle in the caverns or...God forbid...mine out adamantine early on and turn it in to stuff you may find yourself attacked by forgotten beasts pretty frequently.  Thankfully, forgotten beasts generally are pushovers so long as their attacks don't have syndromes attached to them...I had a fort laid low by one beast's vapors (apparently the dwarves thought it was a good idea to eat food coated with the stuff) so they can really mess things up depending on the nature of their attack.

Now, surface titans on the other hand...nothing to worry about.  Dragons and hydras are only notable for making valuable soap.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I finally got a Baron...
« on: August 20, 2010, 01:41:20 pm »
Okay, this method got me all the way to the duke.  The only position left to get is the king, and from there I can start playing around to see if any  of the other nobles pop up after I get the king.  However, there's nothing in the raws that would suggest an inherent problem with any of them; perhaps you have to get the duke in order to get the other nobles despite some of them being appointed by the baron/count/duke.

We'll see fairly shortly.  If all this doesn't work, I'll just have to conclude that these other nobles are bugged (probably due to the economy being bugged) and wait until the next release.

Taking time off refreshes the game experience...especially when a new version comes out right in the middle of your hiatus.
