DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Am I the only one?
« on: May 09, 2010, 08:58:41 pm »
So ideas on steps I can take to solve my problem? Also it seems 7/10 of the map has aquifier... each time i gen now.

What type of world are you genning?  I noticed that regular regions (i.e. 40d-style) tend to have far fewer aquifiers compared to the new island types (which makes sense, but it's still a pain).  Fiddling with temperature might have an effect as well.

It seems heavily tied to worldgen.  I had similar situations with both above-ground and underground wildlife in one world, but then genned another and this time it was pretty much identical to 40d, if not more abundant (except for fish).

I imagine I'd have to test it more, but maybe it had something to do with the fact that the underpopulated world was an island and the populated one a regular region.  Both were Medium.

Definitely start off with a tileset.  It's much easier to get a feel for the mechanics behind the game, and once you've got that down it's no problem picking up the ASCII should you choose to do so; the hardest part of the learning curve is just figuring out how to do everything, and there's no reason to make it worse with a bunch of %'s and @'s and &'s.

I did that and then switched over to the ASCII because I liked the clean, classic look it gives the game.  One thing I would like to see in the default graphics is a grid when designating out tiles to dig like in Mayday...makes it a little bit easier to make even rooms

DF General Discussion / Re: Real-world information in the Wiki?

Actually, I got in to DF because of reading the Wiki...the game looks even more amazing when you have no idea what's going on and then you see some complex production chain for a group of goods.  Assuming that's your preferred style of game, that is.

I don't know, if a company like Paradox Interactive made it, it would be pretty damn good...although unlike DF, it would be semi-unplayable until the bugfixes came out rather than just amusingly buggy.  The Hearts of Iron series has been pretty impressive in its depth of gameplay, strategy, and sheer potential for modding.

The military.  By and large, I've had the hospital work well, even things like cleaning with soap; improved butchery and fat rendering make it much, much easier to keep a steady supply on hand.  However, it's really irritating to be unable to deal with a simple goblin ambush due to the problems with the orders system.

So, basically, I'll wait until the next set of fixes before returning to DF 2010, or alternatively turn ambushes off (I can deal with the FBs et. al., but goblins are difficult because of the order system).

Siliceous ooze...and suns.  Not just one sun, but multiple ones.  At the same time, he's not given to flights of fancy, so perhaps he's one of the great dwarven explorers of the seas and space.  But then again, he is a "herbalist", so maybe he's been spending too much time out in the woods "gathering plants".

There's still something off about a dwarf that likes not just the sun but multiple ones.

A lignite quern.  It was worth 48,000 so I ended up sticking it in the baron's room, but still...from a practicality standpoint, I don't think lignite is the best material for grinding food.  Unless you like your dwarven flour to be fortified with the smooth pilsner flavor of ancient peat, that is, or want your cloth dyed a lovely shade of sewage.

Of course, it just had to be a possessed mood so the peasant that made it promptly returned to hauling stone and garbage after the fact.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Found a nice site with a magma pipe, plenty of trees, and obsidian (no flux, but plenty of sand and wood to make clear glass to trade for steel)...

...only problem is, the wagon's too close to the magma pipe so once I had finished digging out my basic fort, fire imps emerged and mauled everyone.  Fortunately, though, I did end up getting 14 dwarves on reclaim with plenty of good steel equipment and they proceeded to teach the imps that had occupied the fort a lesson in dwarven justice.  We lost two dwarves in the battle, but it wasn't a big deal and now things are coming along nicely.  The biggest challenge so far has been getting a chair made so I could finally claim the massive amount of stone and wood clogging up my fort.

Also, when I checked Legends to see what had happened in the year between withering and reclaim, it appears human civilizations have inexplicably decided to found a town that had originally died out 870 years prior after an elven attack...not sure if they each refounded Prankedshields independently or if it was just going back and forth in some kind of war.

Got pissed with the buggy military in 2010 (ironically after I set up a 100% perfectly functional hospital and hit adamantine), gave up, and went back to 40d to hone my skills in magma engineering.

I figure I'll switch back once the next round of bugfixes comes out because I miss those gigantic magnetite and hematite veins...not to mention those caverns.  Dem caverns, man, dem caverns.

Right now, a graduate student in accounting.  So, chances are, my future career will be something in accounting...probably internal/managerial or fraud investigation/internal control.  However, OSU's program is pretty flexible in its areas of specialization so there are plenty of options available.

Getting my dwarves to actually kill enemies or even move to a location in a reasonable fashion are pretty difficult...it's easier dealing with forgotten beasts than it is goblins at the moment because the order system seems pretty messed up and my dwarves decide to reenact the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest by marching out in a line that ensures only one reaches the group of goblins at the time.

However, the system is pretty nice as far as equipping goes...that's one thing I definitely like about it, and once there's some more fixes in the military system it'll be a definite step up from 40d.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: trading question
« on: May 07, 2010, 03:09:10 pm »
I never let it get so high as 50,000, let alone 140000.  Chances are good I accidently slip in a cedar figurine and the elves freak and all trade is lost.

Nah, the worst is if you accidentally select a wooden bin.  The value's so small you usually don't notice until it's too late.

Just finished trading with the elves.  It seemed like they were more interested in a percentage at lower values and more interested in the total at higher ones (e.g., they wanted 300 in profit when I traded for one cloth bin, and then when I renegotiated it for two, they only wanted around 500 or so).  Sometimes, you can also whittle it down by including low-value items in the trade; I could usually shave off 50-100 in profit by throwing in barrels or bags of sand.

By that time, you'd get this last Philosopher left in 2010, travelling all the way from the distant universes of 40d...
Urist McOppenheimer.

He demands pitchblende items in his room.

At least once he shows up I can start exporting trinitite mugs.

I always liked the name "River Spirits"...I try to keep it on tap whenever I can.  So I'd say river spirits in a solid oak barrel.
