My orders ended at the end of the last page.

Here's the link to be sure.

Normally obsessed with his own neatly-combed appearance, Vabok McSoapmaker was horrified at the sight which awaited him at the end of his journey. They'd said the outpost was new, that things might be a bit rough to start off with. But this? Mud everywhere, all the inhabitants caked in filth, and not even anywhere to sleep! Living like this was for humans - dwarves were civilised creatures, and civilised dwarves do not wander around with their beards full of mud. Fortunately, Vabok had a few plans to improve this...

ORDERS:
First and foremost, construct a well. The water can be drawn from the aquifer. For now just channel a small hole into the top of the aquifer and put the well on top. The miners can sort out a proper reservoir later.

Next, we need lots and lots of soap to keep the dwarves clean. We can probably sell any excess too, and I belive it can be used for buildings if there is enough? Anyway, have the miners cut out a small apartment in the stone with a soapmaker's workshop, an ashery and a wood furnace. A bed would be nice too so Vabok has somewhere to sleep. Have Vabok start on wood burning then lye making (having a Urist do the wood burning would be handy). Actual soap-making would be nice but will have to wait till we have some tallow.

A kitchen is necessary for making tallow, and we're going to need one anyway for decent food. Are any of the new arrivals cooks?

Ahh SOAP!! Great! Excellent™
I ♥ you already.

We have a kitchen in the farming area, and surely we should have plenty of tallow available already fron slaughtering some yaks and elephants.

Soap and a well, Doc Valrandir is soo happy.

Doctor Valrandir schemes for the Spring of year 1003.

Doc Valrandir Diary
"There have been many opinions about what the priorities should have been. If the aquifer project failed my position here would become quite questionable."
"At least this is done, but now mostly everyone looks my way every time they have the smallest problem."
"It was much easier back in the mountain home, doing the same dumb job over and over again without questions."
"But I wanted to be someone, and here I am, somehow more than before, in some dirt hole."

Doc Valrandir does have much time to waste writing in his journal.
Everything is too dirty to be sane, we are sleeping in a dirt corridor and there are DOGS in the fucking dining room.

We have stone now, and access to the underground to carve a shining, clean fortress.
But digging in stone takes time, and carving the perfect™ fortress even more time.
Should we continue to "sleep" next to each other's farts for weeks, months, years to come, until our new quarters are perfectly finished?

No.

We must first take measures to increase our sanity, and then carve out our fortress in greater working comfort.

So far my blueprints have been somehow followed. My guess is that it is easier for the miners to mindlessly mine my plans rather then having to think of something else than the next elephant meal.
And that way I can get things to be clean. Not in the dust! But we are past that now.

Muttering to himself for the 21th time:
"These blueprints focus on improving our live in the short them, followed by starting to strike the stone deeper below."

First, we must quickly expand our internal storage, for food or anything else needed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Second, we must have private bedrooms. Forty will suffice for the time being.
We will keep the existing dormitory but take half of the beds or more away from it and inside the new rooms.
I will be asking any skilled carpenter to complete the missing beds.
This quick dig will improve our situation a lot, in a short amount of time.
But the real rooms will be dug in stone.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Thirdly, digging down will scatter rock fragments EVERYWHERE.
I will be personally processing them into blocks, over and over and over again!

The left room will serve as a rock block stockpile, and if our carpenter can make tons and TONS of wooden bins, the better.
The top and bottom rooms are for me, one office with a table and chair, and one bedroom with a bed. I must get away from the filth focus on my block cutting work after all, its important!!
The right room is reserved for a rough rock stockpile. Only basic rocks will be stored here, no metals, no clay, no nothing but basic dumb rocks waiting to be cut!
Finally in the very center of it all, I will build my personal Mason workshop, where nobody else will work ever! (Workshop profile, Valrandir only).

Our latest migrants will move the stone around, and I will only need to take a few steps to get the next stone to cut.
I am planning on doing this for all spring at least.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fourthly, after we are done digging in the dirt, we must move unto Stone!
1. Dig down the 3x3 up/down stairs 5 level down away from the aquifer, then follow this blueprint exactly.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

2. One level above and one level below each 2x2 up/down stairs, dig this schema:

Then we will have a good entrance to the underground which will later on be secured further, then a main crosspoint for future expansion, and 64 nice bedrooms, expandable up and down.

Doc Valrandir enabled skills
- Mason and nothing else, no hauling.

Other important stuff
Valrandir will take the seat of Bookkeeper and Manager, with the highest bookkeeping precision.

Stones! Excellenet™
Soon, I won't have sand in my boots!

After your next update;
Could you please, please post the fortress to dfma?
The instructions are here

This would allow everyone to see all corners of the fort to better post their next actions.

335
21 migrants! Armok be praised!

Prepare for dorfing announcements! Prepare for me to attempt to re-organize everyone's orders and priorities after the next seasonal post!

STONES !?!
We are saved!

Did you channel down in the aquifer before dropping the first ring?

1. Channel down into the aquifer to make room for the first ring to drop in
2. Next channel everything inside the dropped ring, pump out the water and no new water will flow in, because that the first ring is stopping it.
3. Channel for the second ring, if the aquifer was only one level deep, then it is done. If not you will get water, repeat the process.

Soo I missed one important fact, we will be needing at least one pump to drain the center before proceeding to the next level.
Surely we can get some kind of stone from the traders to make a mechanism? We can use wood for the block, corkscrew and pipe.

Good Progress  :)

Here are my orders for Doc Valrandir for Winter.
- Have a table and chair constructed somewhere inside out of the way
- Declare this as an office for Doc Valrandir, and set him as manager and bookkeeper with max precision
- Continue breaching the aquifer

Security

If we have any spare Urists, form a squad of two with them.
Build two wooden armor stand and weapon rack in the barrack and declare it as such barrack.
The new squad will train non-stop with one wooden sword and one bone helm each.

  - 8 -> empty space
  - A -> Armor Stand
  - W -> Weapon Rack

    A 8 8 8 W
    8 8 8 8 8
    8 8 8 8 8
    8 8 8 8 8
    W 8 8 8 A

Edit:
Finally skulls should be made into totems, horns into crafts and bones into bolts.

Question: Can we ask apprentice dwarves to use other skills they may have had?  For example, "Oi!  Urist!  You used to be a mason, right?  Think you can whip up a floodgate for this project and then hook it up to the lever we need?" As said by a mechanic.

Aye, of course. They're just not going to respond to orders that have nothing to do with you and your personal goals. Therefore, someone taking the Captain of the Guard post and using his squad to patrol for suspicious activity in the future might be a good idea.

Valrandir hasn't responded to if the breach is screwed or not, so I'm going to look it up on the wiki and continue playing. No need to delay things, we've got a lot of people waiting.

I've responded a few posts above yesterday, and also sent you a PM.

Oh dear, I'm glad I'm saving seasonally. I didn't follow Valrandir's aquifer instructions properly and I'll have to re-do them. So, next update shall be a bit late.

Agh. Autobackup was turned off. So we don't have a seasonal save. I'm not sure I've totally screwed up though: I just ended up channeling out more than I should before the first drop. Specifically, I channelled the very middle of the plug out down to the aquifer. Don't ask me why I did this: I . . . thought the rings were dropped separately.

Here's a pic of my n00bish fumbling:

I didn't realize that the whole thing had to be dropped first, THEN the channelling would be done section by section. So, can I plug the very middle up with some walls/floors or will they deconstruct on impact, leaving all this work completely wasted?

We can easily repeat this process but it'll take another two seasons. I can't believe I didn't have Autobackup on.

This picture looks fine, its ok to do all the channeling first.
if you did not yet construct the support and can no longer access the ring, then build some floors to get access, then build the supporting architecture and finally remove the floors.

Or is there's another problem? YOur picture looks fine.

342
Why process the Yaks now? We can just milk them.

Because we are quite low on food.
If you want to take care of the food situation I can retract that order.

343
On the Automn, Doc Valrandir will do the following by order of priority.

- Coordinate the aquifer operation
- Process our two yak into food, either himself or by asking a butcher to do it.
- Make wooden craft, unless someone more skilled can do it, and have them stored next to the trade depot
- When the caravan comes, trade all we can for
  - Food
  - Drinks
  - at least 8 cloth and 8 threads
  - Some gypsum powder
  - Any special requests

For the next year, we will be asking for
- Drinks
- Cheese
- Anything Steel related
- Any special requests

I vote no on prospector. As it's a cheating program. :P Find out whats in the dirt when you dig it up, like a proper dwarf.

This, I agree.

wahqahhahklh!  :o Shit, sorry. Between working on my fanfiction, college, pestering my uncle about that busboy position I applied for, rp'ing  :-X, and getting addicted to Angband, I'd all but completely forgotten about this.  :-[

But don't worry, just because I'm lazy and forgetful and ridiculously ADHD'd doesn't mean I've abandoned the thread, or anything. That won't happen until this fort has finally been completely run into the ground. So I've updated the OP and notified KCFOS.  8)

Thanks for the update : )
