Curses / Re: Questions about Slaves to Armok
« on: May 02, 2012, 03:28:33 am »
I love playing as a gargantuan Lizardman, stomping trees to pulp and teleporting Kobold's hearts out of them. The first Slaves to Armok was simply amazing for what it was, an unfinished dream. I kind of wish it would've survived. Or got released to the public to develop...

Don't worry guys, he teleported into the ceiling! Haha, good thing I'm putting off trying this till it's finished. This looks too incredible of a project to pass up in the future. I've wondered what it'd be like to come face-to-face with 895. I'm interested to see how they'll implement it.

34.07 for modding.

I dunno, I was a huge fan of build 23-27 [pre-3d] since it was the first time we were allowed to mod the raws to make any civilization/creature playable in fortress mode. That's when I started my first Minotaur Hermit Fortress.

Getting that first anvil was a pain in the ass, though. Totally not something I miss from those versions. I crushed one too many anvils in accidental collapses in my first forts. Thank you for making 7x7 rooms safe, Toady.

That sometimes happens when you wish for something or edit your save file to add items.

I did just delete the entire save and start a fresh character on the new build, so I'm not sure if that's it.

I found a bit of an odd bug for you, Whales. What's wrong with this inventory?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I 'e'xamined and picked up some cargo pants from a dresser, then tried to drop the 'a' pair of jeans. I ended up dropping the cargo pants since they were wielded automatically and must've been assigned to 'a' as well. I checked my inventory after assuming I dropped the jeans, but I still had them on. Then I picked up the cargo pants and put them on. But when I picked them up, their quick letter was a tilde. But then in the inventory it was listed as 'a', shown in the first picture. And that means something went wrong somewhere, but I'm not sure what.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Maybe the first auto-wield fudged up the letter assignment for 'a'?

This is the newest windows build, by the way. Not sure if this has happened before or not so I figured I may as well let you know. I can't seem to recreate it, though.

All sorts of new and fun things. Firstly, who is this:
Spoiler: ? (click to show/hide)
He shows up on the loading screens sometimes.

It's possible that's a Nobody, but since the game focuses on the SCP's themselves i think it's more likely that's SCP-990.

The Founder, perhaps? Such a vague picture could be any number of things, really, considering the universe this is in.

Something Awful's Let's Play forum has a terms of service that makes whatever is created there the IP of the LP'ers, as I recall. Or something like that. I haven't read it myself. That's why that topic devolved into a legal contest, really.

I also like how two of the preview pictures I notice on this have been posted on this forum as fanart by certain folks, so yeah, I'm pretty sure this fellow copy+pasted all sorts of junk. And it's a bit annoying that someone would try to make money for themselves by 'teaching' while Toady lives off of donations. Also there's that super neat wiki, which I've been using since day one for no charge.

I'm seeing these circlejerk threads more often lately. Not sure what that means, if anything.

It just means new people feel entitled to spout off that they're better than x community. It's the cool thing to do on any forum.

Blood for the river gods.

It obviously has a thirst for a liquid other than mere water. Appease it.

DF General Discussion / Re: The likelihood of ever seeing a DF 1.0
« on: April 18, 2012, 12:40:00 pm »
Well, if we go by how long it's taken him to do what he's done so far.. I remember it took about a year to go from 2d to 2d+ [.23 to .27], and then it took 2d+ another year of development and optimizing to be ready for the nearly 2-year gap between versions .28 and .31, leading us to Z-axis [3d] DF. It's been a couple years since that point, and Toady has added huge amounts, so now the version is .34 and bound to keep going up in the near future as he adds main features (which are recognized with the first xx.00's of the version, if I remember correct).

So if we go by this rate, it'll be approximately 50 or so years. Maybe 35 if he hits quick bits of development near the end, but otherwise don't keep your hopes up. And as stated, it's an evolving project and the version numbers are mostly for Toady to keep track of his own devlog so one person's 1.0 could be another person's .1.

I mean, it's almost been 7 years now and I've only seen a good 5-10% of the game be completed.

God knows a Blue Heeler is able to take down a moderately physically in-shape officer, they're slavering demon-dogs.

Though every Heeler I've known is about maximum of knee height and usually always territorial ankle-biters. Dangerous shit compared to a specific Pittbull which was able to tackle me on my shoulders from behind after tearing a chain from a tree after simply spotting me walking to my place [I lived right next to a trailer park at the time, violent dogs being a norm usually]. But I guess I'm just silly for thinking Heelers are harmless.

Also, if an officer of the law feels legitimately threatened by a dog that's a foot and a half tall, maybe that person shouldn't be the one claiming to defend justice in the face of danger, such as real criminals which can out-danger a dog of any breed by a factor of ten even while unarmed, so yeah.

DF General Discussion / Your *First* "Fun" Moment
« on: April 17, 2012, 05:04:30 am »
The topic name speaks for itself, what was your first experience of complete and total FUN of a fortress?

My first time was embarking in the ancient v23 of DF. I spent my first few games fumbling around with the controls and dying to elephants on my second non-abandoned fort. But after I found out how to dig into the mountain, I was ajoy. Skip to about five minutes later and reading the wiki much more, I managed to reach the river and almost lost my original miner.

Now, this is where I thought 'Hey, I can just use this river as a moat, right?' And I quickly dug a 1-tile corridor to make the 'channel' I assumed would do the moat job. I managed to build the channel, killing a miner because I started from the LEFT going to the right. I attach a floodgate randomly to a piece of the channel which reached outside, but realize it's a bas position for some reason and decide to remove it.

Queue water flooding the whole world because the destroyed floodgate 'released' the water held in the channel. Goddamnit. *Abandons* I had just read Boatmurdered before that and now knew the meaning of 'fucking the world.' Albeit with more soggy doom than fire. I doubt I was the only one to have this happen as well! Magma/Water physics were highly dangerous before real pressures were implemented.
