Relicshield, pop. 75, Mid-Autumn of 268

Trade with the humans had barely had a chance to recover before the goblins conducted a massive, coordinated ambush.  Even though the defenders of Relicshield did their best, one of the wagons was destroyed and the humans fled for the hills rather than the safety of the fortress.  The melee troops had the support of several new marksdwarves shooting from recently constructed ramparts.  Edem II, eager for revenge, was right in the middle of the battle when he came up against a particularly fearsome goblin armed with a silver mace.  The fourteen year old member of Relicshield's army did his best, but he found himself outclassed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

His sister, Goden II, watched over him while help was on the way, but things looked grim.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This was by far the toughest challenge yet for the medical staff of Relicshield.  To make matters even worse, the soap supplies had dwindled to nothing without anyone noticing!  Edem II's wounds were cleaned with fresh well water, but he still got several infections.   All four medics of the fortress tended to him night and day, with help from the medically experienced metalsmith who carried him from the field of battle.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After a month and a half, Edem II was released from the hospital, a little worse for wear, but still ready for combat training, cast & crutches be d@mned!

Relicshield, Summer of 267

After seeing the latest sartorial trends of the humans and elves, Duke Phyllite swore that Relicshield would not only become the new Mountainhome, but also the fashion capital of the world!  To that end, he decreed that all clothing with even the slightest bit of wear be thrown out.  All industries in the fortress came to a screeching halt as cabinets and coffers were emptied and thousands upon thousands of threadbare clothes, socks, and rags that somehow passed for shirts, were thrown out.  Known as The Great Purging, only time will tell if Duke Phyllite will realize his ultimate goal...

(I finally got around to using DFHack's cleanowned function.  16 years worth of clothes is a LOT.  It took forever for the dwarves to get rid of all that stuff!)

Had two artifacts, one secretive woodcrafting, one possessed bonecrafting. Both were children. Both children were eventually kidnapped, with another being murdered.

I know children aren't very popular in DF, but I always rage a bit when one of mine gets nabbed  >:(.

Half a year later, a migrant wave brings the population from 20 to 84. This has got to be the biggest goddamn migrant wave I've ever seen. In addition to filling a few empty roles, I've also been able to fully constitute one squad, and half-fill two others, and I don't even have any kind of equipment production yet.

Hah, those can be awesome... when you're prepared for them.  When I first started playing, I was thinking, "oh... it would be great to get more than just 2-4 migrants at a time."  Then BAM! Over 50 of them!  I was totally caught off-guard and barely had the infrastructure up for  a quarter of that number.  Fun times ;).

Any demonic diplomats or megabeasts with syndrome blood splattered around?

Remove the half-built construction completely, then try again.

5th Granite, Early Spring of 261

SIX snatchers were discovered during the largest assault against Relicshield to date.  3 were slain immediately, 2 were chased off, but somehow 1 kidnapper was able to slip by.  Mosus, son of Goden the broker and Edem the carpenter, was only 2 years old when he was snatched away.  His 18 year old sister Goden II, the youngest member of Relicshield's militia, was in the battle, but she had no idea Mosus was anywhere nearby before he was snatched.  His older brother, Edem II, has sworn to join the militia in five years, when he is of age.

Relicshield, pop. 58, Late Summer of 266

Edem II has fulfilled his oath to join the military in memory of his abducted brother Mosus.  Along with his older sister, the axedwarf Goden II, the goblins will pay in blood! Unfortunately, as Relicshield gains one soldier, it loses another - Dodok Clawsack, the eagle-eyed marksdwarf from last year's siege :(.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As Dodok was laid to rest, the humans returned... but bearing gifts, rather than swords (or giant snails).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Peace was granted and trade returned to normal.  As a nod to widower Ushrir Calmedbust, the minecart route where Dodok struck first blood was named after her.

Man, the recruit has a very fitting name.  :D

Oh, that's her title.  I give my military dwarves Recruit <Weapon> or Soldier <Weapon> to keep them separate from civilians in DwarfTherapist, but still arranged by weapon type.  I wanted to make sure marksdwarves were featured at the end, so I shortened crossbow to xbow.

The only way I can think of off hand is using the Relations screen from the details screen of a family member or someone who knew them.

Yup, I used the deceased dwarf's wife to view his bio.

In my game I can't see the detailed description for dead dwarves, it only shows me the name. Am I missing something. Some unknown shortcuts? :-?

If you mean the summary of his life and cause of death, rather than the bio, you can view that with a memorial, [t] [enter] [v].  You can still engrave slabs for dwarves already buried.  It's a useful way to see how lost dwarves perished if you missed their death in text spam.

Relicshield, pop. 58, Late Summer of 265

The fortress faced its first siege, but from a surprising enemy.  Rather than goblins, it was the humans! The citizens of Relicshield were shocked, as trade had been going well with the tall ones.  Rumors have it that the goblins framed the dwarves with the death of a human diplomat from the year before. Still, for a siege, it was rather small.  The humans only fielded 21 soldiers, including one mounted on a giant snail :o. A fatal headshot from a marksdwarf drew first blood and set the tone for the rest of the battle.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

14 of the humans were slain, causing the rest to flee in terror.

Meanwhile, Relicshield mourned the first loss of a military dwarf.  He died not in battle, but of old age, having lived his 169 years to the fullest.

Relicshield, pop. 60, Late Winter of 264

The registration for 2 new toddlers was somehow overlooked and they were never added to the day care center.  This wasn't noticed until one ran by militia captain Olivine, who was stationed at the Northeast surface outpost.  Little Momuz ran smack dab into a goblin snatcher, who stabbed him in the leg before stuffing him in a sack >:(.  Olivine wasn't having it and chased that kidnapper down!  After hammer smashing the arm with the sack and freeing the child, Olivine punched the goblin in the spine hard enough to paralyze her.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The kid's is now safely in the hospital and is being treated by the chief medical dwarf, coincidentally also named Momuz.

The fort also welcomed its first two grizzly bear cubs this season!

I made 2 simple minecart tracks.  The carved one works just fine, but the constructed one doesn't.  I set stop 1 to load, then guide west and stop 2 to empty and then guide back east.  Even though I've defined both stops, I keep getting the set dir/connect error.  It's just a simple line with no breaks in the track.

**Edit**

I just got it working. I didn't realize that the ends of the track, before making a stop, needed to be constructed specific to the direction.  So EW tracks in the middle and an East track at one end and a West track at the other.  It's obvious now, but I missed it because the carved track did this automatically.

I put a small drink stockpile in my dining area that is linked to a much bigger stockpile so that it is constantly full. As my dining halls are always cross-shaped, I put those little stockpiles in the corners.

Your design for dining rooms is one of my favorites by far.

There's a simple trick you can use to reduce the ludicrous time consumption of drinking - enroll all civilians apart from miners, woodcutters and hunters in 'no-uniform' squads with no duties and set their provisions to 'carry any drink' and 'carry no food'. They'll pick up and use waterskins/flasks, and a drink happens almost instantaneously, i.e. it takes an in-game minute or two instead of several days.

Great tip!  I was thinking of switching to civilian off-duty militia to rid them of slowly degrading clothing.  Nice to see another bonus for it, too.

You can set it to sit in the middle, but not replace the last. That'd work, right? My forts never survive to see so many offspring...

Yup, you can change the nickname, though the game treats it like a first name.  Still, that's not a bad idea.  The stories of each clan in engravings would be immediately discernible.  I named each of my original 7 after their first mineral preference, but those will work just fine as family names, too :).

The isolated fort Taronkivish had a census last year. 122 dwarfs - grown out of an end-of-first year population of seventeen, including two immigrated children. Seven of the current denizens are single dwarfs who embarked or immigrated, six are the heads of the Three Families. Between them, these three couples have 70 children in the fort, and 24 grandchildren. There's also _one_ other clan, a couple with their thirteen children.

I've been naming firstborn dwarves after their mother or father, according to gender, but other than that, I haven't taken a close look at the family trees.  The clans of your fort sound really cool!  I wish we could change the last names of our dwarves to keep better track of their families.
