DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

a flying nematode with poisonous gas showed up. it immediately got put down by my marksdwarves without a single injury.

Nice!  Did the marksdwarf with the killing shot get a title?  If so, what was it?

I stick to the outer 'cracks', the ones that are completely safe to mine. If there's a level with only a 4x4 area blacked out, that fixes the location of the potential hollow for that level and gives me a few more safe tiles if the unrevealed tiles on the level above or below don't overlap that one 4x4 too much.

I suppose I need to get over my paranoia :).  A few candy weapons would be nice.

Do you find it worth the FPS hit?

Just don't send them with maces, they'll take forever to clobber anything to death.

My current #2 in total kill counts is a macedwarf.  Even before she got a lead artifact mace, she was doing fine.  Fights usually consist of her breaking a leg, then crushing the skull after the invader falls.

I wonder if tame trolls equip weapons?  That's a pretty cool kid you've got there.  I've never seen that particular trait level before!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Searching for the Cavern Layer
« on: July 09, 2013, 01:29:17 pm »
Keep digging.  I didn't find my first cavern layer until -47 or so.  Second one wasn't until -114.  It's possible to dig through a cavern layer without revealing it, so use more than one exploratory tunnel shaft.

Don't ignore the FPS warnings!  Candy isn't really worth it, at least for me.  I've found steel to be just fine.

I understand that forgotten beasts are randomly generated, but does this occur during actual play, or does it happen during world gen?  Is it possible for them to go extinct?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Basic training - does it even work?
« on: July 09, 2013, 11:17:03 am »
I use small squads instead of danger rooms.  It doesn't work as quickly, but I like the idea of recruits training their way to legendary via sparring.  The recruit squads have 3 soldiers with 2 minimum for training.  That way, 1 soldier gets a break while the other 2 spar.  This has served me quite well.  My current fortress is 74 years old and while I've lost some soldiers over the years, invaders have lost a lot more.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

By the time you get legendary teachers, you don't have to worry about the size of the recruit squads, as leveling really speeds up.

My new militia commander, Goden, a siege operator with macedwarf experience before he migrated, attacked with a sword wielding recruit. Osel flew out of reach until the recruit managed to cut open one of his wings, and then he stayed on the ground. Goden and the recruit then proceeded to destroy Osel while he just kept breathing his worthless gas. After a while a recruit with a spear joined in, and helped reduce the forgotten beast to a bloody pulp.

It's fun reading back over combat logs for big monster fights when dwarves are in the thick of it.  You can just imagine the teamwork involved as they take the thing down.

However, with an uninjured arm it grabbed the hammer dwarf in a wrestling hold and broke his ankle.  The minotaur passed out from pain shortly after and was pounded into oblivion.

The wounded dwarf was carried into the newly designated hospital and treated rapidly and effectively.  A clean break and it was sutured and splinted without further incident.  (And the dwarf was walking without a crutch by the end of the season.)

I love when dwarves leave the hospital good as new :D!

So, mountainhome and Queen, I leave you with this regard:

Do not return to Goldsquash.  It is haunted.  And if I can get my corpse into the river and float it anywhere near the mountainhome, I will personally come to haunt you until the end of your days, my ever wise and loving queen.

-Erush Egdothgeshud, leader of Goldsquash, soon to be sacraficed to Armok's bloody grace.

That was a great read.  Are you going to reclaim the site?

Edem is an axedwarf too! (I had combat skills not showing when I checked him!) This could be a duel, or just the quick loss of a decent axedwarf. Edem and the scorpion stalemate a bit, with Edem getting knocked around a bit. Then boom! He gets a shot in! Yes! But wait. He's using a pick. Oh man, uniform conflict! And he's not wearing armor!

But his training held true, and with some parrying, a lucky snag in the cloak, and fancy footwork, he finally got in a lovely shot to the cephalothorax, puncturing the heart, and then another to scratch the brain for the kill.

Well done, Edem!  These are the kind of moments that really make the game shine!

That's rather heavy!  Please test us out and let us know if it's decent as a bashing weapon.
