DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

EDIT II: Not only was she among the dead, she was the first one to die. Sgt. Hailsmiths lead Privates Imush and Udil right into the Queen's Guard and she plowed through them all, leaving the maceelves and their crude bludgeoning tools to them. She sliced away an arm, both legs, and finally bisected her.

It's made all the more humiliating as she turned and tried to run as soon as she sighted Obok. Apparently The Destruction of Blindness' reputation precedes her.

Good to see that Obok is still kicking butt.  Is she also the Baroness?

When the military arrived Likot, the commander, was first to charge at the invaders. She was the most skilled of the military, and blocked the goblins arrows as she charged toward them. Once she was in range to use her sword a single arrow managed to hit her. This arrow hit in the head, killing her instantly.

Glad your soldiers pulled through.  A squad of archers in the early game is pretty frightening!

I hope there's a way, too!

DF Suggestions / Re: Imperious Conquest of the Barbarian Races?

Along with conquest, I'd also like the option to make a formal alliance with beast men tribes.  If relations remain positive for several years, perhaps a few migrants to the fortress could be pulled from the various races that are allied with the dwarf civ.

Do the happy thoughts from multiple mist generators stack?

Wow, that's pretty cool!  I always thought that only happened on the surface!

an artifact [whip] requires a dwarf who likes them.
Thinking about it, I've never seen a dwarf with a preference for whips, halberds, two-handed swords, or any other foreign melee weapon, nor has any dwarf without a weapon preference made an artifact foreign melee weapon. I'm not sure about the ranged weapons -- I've had dwarves make artifact blowguns, but I don't recall if the dwarf had a preference for them.

I thought so, too, but then I remembered this thread:

Due to their size and blunt attacks, they can even kill iron-armored invaders :D.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Syrup Science?
« on: July 08, 2013, 12:18:58 pm »
I once had the Sphalerite set-up, but once my food industry really got going, I decided to just forget about syrup and store solids back into containers.  To my surprise, the syrup still gets cooked.  Not all the time, but I have a 3x3 syrup-only stockpile that periodically gets cut down by half, then refilled by the barrels still left at the farmer's workshop.  It certainly not as efficient in terms of syrup use, but it keeps things a lot tidier.  Besides, all the quarry leaves and flour already give the lavish meals a big value boost :).

That's beautiful.

Or an arena where prisoners are slaughtered, with a burrow activated during the executions so that most of the fort witnesses it.

The Hammerer deserves an adamantine hammer (or a light wooden one) so as to be ineffective as possible :)

It's no longer guaranteed that the Hammerer uses the the hammer you've equipped him or her with.  When I had my first execution, my hammerer grabbed an iron hammer from the weapons stash, even though she had a steel hammer in hand.  She crushed the criminal's head, then promptly returned the borrowed hammer.  I'm generally a care bear, but when it comes to justice, I fully expect my hammerer to at least break some bones.

VerdantSF, you make me jealous of your dragon army.

Heheh, yeah they're a lot of fun :).  I lost 61 dwarves recently, but the dragons are definitely one of the reasons I won't be hitting the "abandon" button anytime soon.

Relicshield, pop. 75, Autumn of 325 (Year 74)

The Evils of Spray returned in force, hoping to take advantage of the Mountainhome's weakened state.  The goblins were sorely disappointed.  One untrained reservist was killed in battle, but the invaders were crushed and scattered.

Meng the dragon trainer survived the loss of his left leg due to the ghost attack.  Despite hobbling on crutches, he still commands the respect of Relicshield's dragons.  All four adults are now masterfully trained.

25 forgotten beasts have thus far failed to breach the Mountainhome's defenses. The majority of them have been blasted away by dragonfire, but twice a twisted creature so horrifying arrived that the dragon hatchlings cowered in fear and refused to attack.  The hatchlings were brought back to the Dragon Den on the surface.  As expected, the adult dragons are far more aggressive, so now Slusa and Istrath guard the second cavern's entrance.

IMPORTANT: enabling the cooking of plants is not recommended. It will use the plant and return no seeds. If you cook plants constantly, you can easily cause an actual lack of seeds for your farms.

Unless you use Seedwatch in DFHack :).

The Forgotten Beast Careme Theyiseweri has come!  An enormous beakless grouse.  It has two broad horns and it has a bloated body.  Its dark chestnut feathers are patchy.  Beware its fire!

Good thing fire-breathing Forgotten Beasts aren't immune to dragonfire :D.
