The most terrifying I've seen is a giant songbird with, confusingly, both freezing and flaming breath. I was never quite sure whether it was two independent breath attacks or if it simultaneously froze and burned my dwarves. What I did find out for sure, though, was that it also caused the rot. That was a fortress-ender.

Here's why we know they don't exist.

Previously, to have wood grow underground, you had to BOTH flood tiles to get them muddy, AND discover an underground river before growth would happen on underground, muddied tiles. (Natural, not farms.)

Now, all you have to do is muddy an underground tile and growth starts. This was necessary for the cave ecology of mushrooms and stuff to work right, every time, on every site.

So, no underground rivers as they were previously understood. There are bodies of moving water underground that can resemble rivers, but there are no mechanics attached to them anymore.

Technically, no. You must have discovered a cavern with water in it before underground growth starts. Haven't opened the caverns? No growth. Have opened the caverns, but unluckily found a dry one? No growth. The gist of your argument is correct though.

^This. However, DfHack was never updated for .31.17 either, since it was the current release for such a short period. It only works on 31.16 or earlier.

It is perfectly safe to trade them leather armor. However, if the armor was stored in a wooden bin and you tried to trade that, that would have made them angry. You need to mark trade on each individual item in order to trade the items and not the bin.

Constructed walls/floors made out of rough stone have the same value as walls/floors carved out of that stone. Constructed walls/floors made out of stone blocks have the same value as smoothed walls/floors carved out of that stone. Blocks have no quality levels.

Yes. In .31.17, weapon traps, spear traps, and stone-fall traps are bugged and crash the game when they are triggered. Presumably, you are discovering ambushes when they trigger your traps, so it appears that the ambush is causing the crash, when reality the trap is. Try removing your traps and see if ambushes still crash the game.

Probably your best bet is to reduce the cavern layer number to 1, then max out the number of z-levels above cavern 1.
