Can't wait till I get home this weekend to dl the new version. I'm totally psyched from what I've been reading in this thread about the metal rarity. Now I don't have to go back to 40d everytime I want a game with less metal, and more importance on exploratory mining. Or looking for sites that are completely metamophic and igneous intrusive all the way down for challenge in 31.x. Getting to steel before in 31.x was way too bloody easy, I've been avoiding sedimentary sites cause of it.

And I can tell you from experience, you do not need steel to survive goblin ambushes/sieges in 31.x without walling up. Build some trap chambers, dodge this traps are nice, flooding chambers (magma or water variety), shooting galleries for marksdwarves(no need for metal with them). Use some war dogs with your troops(bone and leather armed if need be), remember the dogs are to distract and hold while your dwarves kill. You only have to survive the first wave or 2 before you can start making some stuff from goblinite to outfit your squads better.

Yes, its very possible. I've seen at least a dozen snowless glacier embarks and 2 or 3 snowless tundras. Though that'd be because the majority of my embarks are glaciers and tundras. I still have yet to figure out what causes them, and would love to know. Just something about that shiny blue ice, and no snow objects to be tracked hehe.

I have a working sea serpent farm in a fortress at the moment.  The same techniques I'm using could be used for mermaids, except that in the current version mermaids don't breed, can't be butchered, and aren't worth anything anyway.

Who wants to bet that this was changed from 40d to the current version due to the existence of this very thread?  :o

And how many people have undone the changes to the merfolk raws and restored them to their 40d selves? I don't play ocean embarks often, and good aligned ones even less, but if I do play an embark where the merfolk spawn I want the option to farm them if I so choose.

This one has a suitably evil and smooth feel to it. Especially once your fortress is established down by the magma sea. It's a remix of "Hellfire Mantle" the stage 6 theme in Subterranean Animism.

Well finished a quick series of tests. 5 different scorching maps and the results show some evaporation but the rate was variable for each one. None of them had near enough evaporation to account for what Mr Kraken is seeing. Though I only used 5x5 pits, he's got a bloody huge moat. I'm thinking if you combine the natural 1/7 evaporation with the hot/scorching biomes nicking units of water off the deeper tiles, you might have what he has. Also because on each map the evaporation rate was different, I'm thinking that his scorching map is hotter than mine were. It took about a season to evaporate a 5x5 room of 7/7 water on 3 of my tests, 1 had no noticeable evaporation at all after a season, and the last one had some. And the 5x5 exposed aquifer rooms had no noticeable effect on them in any map.

Anyways, they were quick and rather informal tests, so take them with a grain of salt. So enjoy.

Its not just the normal 1/7 evaporation going on. He's in a hot/scorcher biome too. So water on the surface will evaporate no matter what depth it is. And apparently the evaporation rate is extremely fast. I would have thought opening up the ocean to pour in would have been enough, but apparently I underestimated the power of the hot/scorcher biomes evaporation rate. It does make me curious though since it's overpowering an ocean, maybe I can breach an aquifer in one of those biomes by exposing it to the surface... I think it might be time to test that. And even if he does manage to fill it, he'll have to keep the canals/pumps if he figures them out, open/on all the time to keep the moat full.

Can you get above the ocean entry tunnel? If you channel that wall that is making a diagonal, the ocean should flow in a lot faster heh.

Maybe, but I'm worried that the result of that will be a drowning dwarf.

More than likely... but it'll definately speed up the fill rate.

The Goblin in the Pantry Incident.... one of my first forts back in 40d, before I had learned how to use the military. A couple ambushes had just fought their way into my fort past the stone fall and cage trap line. 1 of the gobbos managed to follow a thirsty mason into the food and booze storeroom and murder him there. Meanwhile a few more goblins strolled into the trap line and died, and at that point the rest decided it was too dangerous and retreated. All except for the goblin who ended up in my pantry. He just stood in one corner and never moved for some reason. But he'd always scare any thirsty or hungry dwarf who tried to get something to eat or drink. So after a dozen deaths due to dehydration later I had a new pantry built elsewhere and the door to my old one locked with the goblin still inside. Can't blame him for not leaving, it had plenty of food and booze in it.
