HEY GUYS I AM ALIVE DID YOU MISS ME OR EVEN REMEMBER ME

everything is new and scary and different and I am intimidated, someone hold me

2
How do i install the mod?
Easy: Just choose whichever version you'd like (regular ASCII, or either tileset), unzip it to a location on your computer, and hey presto, run DwarfFortress.exe. :D

3
asfghn are you bussy with the fort.
is that the reason its taking so long :P
It's taking so long because my computer started overheating and shutting down periodically by itself yesterday, which made it really hard to play DF for any length of time. :P

seriously, it was awful—it would shut down with no warning or fanfare, just suddenly go black and dead—and if I tried to turn it on again right away it should shut off again within two or three seconds
[edit] any computer experts know what could have caused that? I thought it might have been a virus, but my disk scans clean, and it kind of sounds more like an overheating issue anyway... thoughts?

It's being good today though, so I should have an update ready and posted sometime this afternoon/evening! LOOK FORWARD TO IT, DESU DESU

Do you settle somewhere unaccessible or something?
Not that I know of... I mean, trade caravans/merchants (have caravans been fixed yet, anyway? I know it's a vanilla bug so I'm not bugging you for once Deon :P)/liaisons get through okay, and on the embark screen my sites always have some civs (usually werewolves and the like) that have red lines (although I've never encountered the WAR that someone, I think rainekage, mentioned)...  :-\

Oh, and melkor, just because IC!asfghn (who can't even spell his own name*) is blaming you for everything that has gone wrong, please don't take offense! Inter-narrator-tension is always fun in succession games, I think (thinking now especially of Headshoots and Boatmurdered, which I think even involved an overseer's ghost talking about getting some +Iron Chain+ to rattle).

And anyway a bit of ribbing never did anybody any harm. ;D

why am i still awake i don't know

*By the way, is the 'accent' too hard to read for anybody? He can always encounter literacy in the afterlife if so. :D

Come on, start training militia! Don't forget it's Genesis you are playing, invaders come in the winter or in the spring in most cases.
You know, in the year or so I've been playing Genesis, I've never actually been sieged. :(
Granted, my forts usually only last about three years at the most until I lose interest, but I've definitely never gotten an invasion in either the first or second year :-\ Do I just have bad luck?

...but then I guess with this skeleton crew I should be knocking on wood 8<

Update tomorrow afternoon/evening (I'm on GMT -7, I think). I have some screencaps taken, but I have too bad a headache tonight to do a decent write-up, and a doctor's appointment to get up early for tomorrow.  :-[

I will fight against Kat's homebrew raptors later.

Kat... where did you go!
Sorry I vanished last night Elone, the cable blipped out ;A;

Maybe you can help me playtest my raptors? :D I'll send you my current raws in a sec (trying to get the Foundboulder save working right now).

7
To heck with you Daff, I'm building myself the most pimped-out tomb ever! \m/

Nah, I kid. I'll do my best! T^T if my tomb isn't done yet it's up to you to finish it 'k

Also, is there anyone who still needs/wants dorfing? I say we ought to keep a list that maybe Slax can keep up on the OP for easy reference, in a spoiler or something.

((An interlude, while I work through Technical Difficulties with the save tileset. Man, I do not know how much longer I could keep this accent up. :P))

Here is a very easy way to do it. It requires very little resources, it is quick to build too.

[...]
...okay, Elone? You're awesome and I think I love you. :D

And I'm writing you a reply email and getting on MSN, so don't think I'm mad at you!

I pretty much always have (a) moat(s), dry ones work atleast as well as ones with water or magma, just remember to remove the ramps on the side of the entrance.

I tend to play DF too safely, my forts usually only end to me generating a new world and updating the game :)
Hmm—Daff, would you mind drawing me up a diagram of what you mean? ASCII is fine (so the word 'draw' here is a bit of a misnomer, but hopefully you get what I mean, lol), but I'm not sure I'm really able to visualize what you mean.

I'm actually trying out a moat design in a solo fort I'm playing currently—just walled off a nice chunk of area surrounding my downward staircases (the map's nice and flat), and I was going to channel a few z layers down and then have a little 'maintenance exit' (1x2, incl. upward stairs to get up and out, sealed off by a door marked forbidden). Would that work?

Not sure how I'll fill it with water/magma yet, but I'll cross that bridge (ha! see what I did there??) when I come to it. :P

11
Also may I suggest a moat? We have a river => plenty of water.
Oh man, if Melkor doesn't get around to this in his turn, I'll give it a try in mine. :D I've never actually built one before, so it will !!FUN!! an adventure

12
Maybe he fixed it because I messaged him about it.

...I love you so much right now.

I know what I'm doing with my weekend. :D

13
Melkor, do your best to keep poor Conflict alive.

first succession here i come

I wouldn't count on that, Conflict :P.
I LOL'd. ;D

KEEP US UPDATED, MELKOR
I HAVE TO KNOW HOW MY DORF IS DOING

I'm constantly mistaken for a guy anyway on the internets, having a male dwarf is no big deal ;)

14
Morning, Deon! I'm just heading to bed. ;)

But okay, I should probably remove the [SKILL_RATE] tags, then—they probably don't need them, as high as they are.
And I definitely never intended them for inclusion in Genesis proper; they're just for my private use, since I like having way over-the-top raptors. I grew up with Jurassic Park, and haven't ceased to be a dinosaur nerd for... God, almost twenty years? Buuuut I wanted to check if the parameters were at least sound-ish, and catch things like that KICKING/STANCE_STRIKE thing.

So thanks all, I really appreciate it :) Sorry if I offended anyone with my outlandish overpowering of things! 8'<

15
Raptors probably SHOULD have higher stance_strike than dragons, because they weigh far less and therefore will do less damage... but have a habit, not of swiping on you, but JUMPING ONTO YOU.
Demonstrated. :D

@Tomi: Are military-type skills separate from adventurer/production-type skills, then? Because I recall that in Therapist, Legendary whatevers read as a raw value of 15. I'm definitely not contradicting or disagreeing with you (it's so hard to convey tone over the interwebs :<), but like I said, I wanted my raptors to be ridiculously overpowered. I'm certainly not submitting these raws for use in the actual, public-consumption Genesis :) That would be silly! And, well... ridiculous. But DF is my way of cheering myself up when I have bad days, and kind of like infinite-ammo or invincibility cheats in other games, for my personal play style I sometimes like to have zillions of embark points or legendary raptors. ;)

Really, I was looking for pointers on how to streamline the code and how to achieve some other stuff, like enlarging the third toe claw and involving that in STANCE_STRIKE (good to know, btw, that kicking isn't a stat! the mod skill names vs in-game skill names get really confusing). I really don't know what I'm doing when it comes to body parts/attacks/skills (so... pretty much everything? *shot*), but I really, really want to learn, and you're all fine brilliant modding folk :) I haven't found any pointers to modding... well, anything, except for the list of creature tokens on the wiki which doesn't go into much detail—but I might just not be looking in the right places, and I make new discoveries all the time (like that article I found yesterday that actually explained the advanced worldgen parameters!)

[edit] Also, is SKILL_RATE redundant? I notice that a lot of critters who used to have it don't anymore, just NATURAL_SKILL. Can creatures lacking SKILL_RATE still level those skills?
