General Discussion / The Roman Catholic Church: Equal Rites.
« on: November 22, 2014, 10:10:02 pm »
Hello there.

As the quote trolliest Catholic unquote, I have taken it upon myself to start a thread on the Catholic Church. Yes, there is a thread on Christian beliefs and discussion, but there is a plenitude of different Christian denominations, more's the pity, and this is one specifically about the Catholic Church.

"There are not a hundred people in America who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions of people who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church — which is, of course, quite a different thing." - the venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen

So, to provide some illumination about the One True Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, I have decided to post this thread to allow questions and responses.

Let's keep things relatively civil. You may question me, you may question the Church, but she is a very pretty lady and I'm happy to white knight for her. Attack me all you like, but the Church is kinda off-limits.

I, for my own part (and any other members of the Universal Body of Christ may join in) will attempt to answer any and all questions you may have. The first one that you might have is to the thread name, which is a reference to the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church and their equality under the Pope.

Be warned: If you express an opinion that I believe is utterly dishpan-ish, I may be terse. If I am, please call me on it. It's the only way I'll learn.

309, Early Granite: Patience Tenbankef, leader of this expedition, scratched her ear absentmindedly, watching the landscape unfold around her. Kat, the guard on the expedition, still had her crossbow loaded, looking more ready to fight than Patience thought she'd ever be.

Patience thought back on the past days. The Rainbow Coalition had chosen her, a member of the Celestial Caste, to lead this expedition. Kat, of the Ranger Caste, was her protector here, as she had been at the capital, and Patience trusted her. The Taciturn Sorceror himself had given her this mission, and she would not fail.

As she kept looking out, Kat beside her nodded. "We're here." she said.

Well, thought Patience. Now or never.

Play With Your Buddies / X-COM: Enemy Unknown
« on: November 05, 2012, 06:42:48 am »

So, fresh from my first completed* game of X-COM: Enemy Unknown, I was deliberating with myself. "What should I do," I asked, "to make this even more fun? !!FUN!! would also be good, too...Ah! I have it! I should display my efforts to Bay12, so that they can criticise me."

So, without further ado, I'd like to start this. I'll update as often as I can**, with a couple of differences from the normal game I'd play. I'm going to make the tactical decisions, but the strategy (which country we go in to help, what we research, what we make, etc) I will be leaving to you. I will also be giving you the exclusive*** naming rights for the cannon fodder we're sending in to this mad brawl!

Now, with nothing else left to go for, your first decision, oh great Bay12!

What continent shall we start in?

As for soldiers, we should have 12 to start with. If you want, I can customise them up for you too, make them look all pretty-like.

*Completed as in none of the team survived.
**UFOs can and will be engaged when spotted, but with alien abductions, the choice of territory to help will be yours.
***One of them may be taken by me.

General Discussion / The Depression Thread! Woo!
« on: September 08, 2012, 07:50:18 am »
Well, I don't think it'd be questioned by anyone who has been reading the Sad thread of late that there's a fair few people on the Bay12 forums who are either suffering from, know someone suffering from, or are otherwise affected by depression.

So, this thread's intent:

  • Company and support for people going through depression.
  • Support and advice for those who know someone suffering from depression.
  • Counselling those who are caring for people with depression.
  • Compiling links and resources for assisting people with depression.
  • In any other way necessary, supporting those people with depression, those people who know someone suffering from depression, or are otherwise affect by depression or people suffering from it.

I'd like to keep this post up to date with links, so any you think should be added would be best PMed to me, to make sure that I catch each one. They will go below.

Now, naturally, there'll be people who'd like to talk with someone here, someone private that they can trust. If you'd like to raise your hand to be one of those people who can be reached on this topic via a PM or other form of communication, please do PM me and I can put a list here, if such a want arises.

This may be a sensitive issue for some people, so I would ask that you refrain from criticising others on their actions, even via a PM. What is said on this thread, stays on this thread.

DF Community Games & Stories / Liongifts - Pony Community Fort
« on: June 20, 2012, 08:12:11 am »
Whatever day this is, year 120 something.

Well, the unwashed peasants have finally finished loading up the wagon with the essential supplies to carve a county out of whatever the place we're going to is called. No soldiers yet, which does mildly dismay me, but I'm a fair hand with a crossbow, so when the serfs get me some bolts, I should be able to play the hero again and save us all.
Onto more important news - We've run out of Sunshine. That will be my first thing started when we get there.
I could write more about the peasantry, but I couldn't care less about them.

((Okay. So this is going to be a community fort, of sorts. We're going to be using the pony raws for 34.10, but not only are we using a mod, we're undergoing a challenge. The Manor challenge. Basically nobles own everything, each level of noble can only have a certain amount of industries as well as a certain amount of soldiers. The nobles decide the conditions of their workers, within certain limits, and there will be a semi-economic meta-game to it.

We currently have Alastair, Lord of the Manor, 2 earth pony peasants, 2 pegasus peasants (one taken), and two unicorn peasants.

Now, because it has to be said:

"Alastair! The peasants are revolting!" "I know, I can smell them from here!"))

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Neon Caballus Evangelion
« on: April 14, 2012, 11:16:38 am »

It is the year 1015, 15 years from Second Impact, when Nightmare Moon returned during the ill-fated Sparkle Expedition and the fallout from her return killed two-thirds of the ponies in the world. You have been selected as the ponies to pilot the Evangelions, magically created bionic monsters sometimes only nominally under your control.

You've received as much training as you could as quickly as it could be done, but it has now been confirmed - the Angels, creations of Nightmare Moon, have returned.

So this would be an adaptation of the Adeptus Evangelion rule set, but set in Equestria, and with the requisite flavour changes. Would anyone be interested in joining?

This would be an IRC game, and would be on irc.mibbit.net at #NeonCaballusEvangelion

It would be once a week, probably on Wednesday or Thursday 22:00 GMT till whenever we finish up, but should run for 4+ hours.

The rulebooks you'll need are the BLACK CRUSADE rulebook, as opposed to the Dark Heresy rulebook usually used, and the rulebook for Adeptus Evangelion 2.0, which is available on 1d4chan. We've currently got two players, the Operations Director and an AT Technician. Max would be 5 or 6 players.

Any questions, feel free to either PM them to me or post them on the thread.

In the beginning of the year 125, the lions of the Manor of Strategy were feasting once more. Another victory had been achieved over the Zebras of the Absolute Grasses, and at last the fools were no more.

Towards the great war lord stepped a sphinx, who dropped to his knees, and in the tradition of the Lions, said "Father, on bended knee I ask thee: raise thy eyes. We, the sons of Acal await thy command. Born under the sign of the lightning do we stand and here we all may die, with our blood on the ground. Let the battle horns sound. Let thy Griffons fly!"

The war lord acknowledged the sphinx, an unblooded male. "What is it thy request, O my son?"

"Father, thy unchallengable rule is mighty! But mightier still it would be, O my father, if thy armies were to establish a new outpost on this river, to prevent thy enemy from accessing the resources here. O my father, thy son beg of thee the opportunity to found an outpost there."

At this, there was much talking through the room. An unblooded, to lead an expedition of the sort? It was unheard of!

But the war lord pondered the idea, and found it to his liking. "Very well, O my son. Thy wish is granted. Take thy pick of the unblooded here, and the blessing of Acal be upon you."

The sphinx nodded, bowed once more, and left the room.

A month later, they had arrived at the location for the outpost, by the traditional method to be called Whiskeredscorch. The group, who had taken to calling themselves 'The Comet Star', in honour of their patron, Acal, consisted of three males, four females. Of the males, there were two sphinxes, and one griffon. Of the females, there was one griffon, two manticores and one sphinx.

The leader, by the name of Seneor, had organised them well. The two manticores had been relegated to mining, to dig out the fortress which would hold supplies as well as providing a last defence, should it be necessary. The other two sphinxes had been told to deforest the area. The last thing they needed was an enemy ambush to come through the trees. The griffons were the builders and butcherers for now, and he was the hunter. He fiddled with the bow in his hand, and prepared for the hunt.

---

Rightio. We don't want any insane antics here. Those are for Glitterglen. Otherwise it should be a typical community fortress.

It's running the MLF mod, with a few changes. Firstly, as befits the warrior society of the lions, all militia captains, and the commander himself, are exempted from punishments. The lions also have the ability to mine and refine metal.

Lions list:

  • Seneor, male Sphinx hunter
  • Unnamed female manticore miner
  • Unnamed female manticore miner
  • Unnamed female griffon carpenter
  • Unnamed female sphinx woodcutter
  • Vance Contrast male sphinx woodcutter
  • Dansel the Amazing male griffon mason

Life Advice / Laptop problems
« on: November 12, 2011, 05:51:37 am »
Okay. I recently restored to factory settings a two year old laptop. It's running Windows Vista Home Premium, and it is a HP Pavilion dv6. Having finished reinstalling, I've run into three separate problems.

Firstly, when sent to sleep, it stays active but unresponsive. Only solution to make it working again is to shut it down manually.

Secondly, when shutting down to install updates, it freezes after updates are installed, stays on the 'shutting down' screen, however there are lines of noise across the place where letters should be.

Thirdly, none of the USB ports are working, however, when connected to one, my USB memory stick is still lit up as if it were connected properly.

Any ideas?

General Discussion / Accurate, orderly dating system
« on: November 01, 2011, 01:16:42 pm »
Our problem: usual spread is four seasons over twelve months. Seasons are not months 1-3,4-6,7-9,10-12. Besides that, month names are not correct (September isn't the seventh month, October isn't eighth, etc.).

Solution: New month system.

Year will start in what is now December, which will be renamed January. New Year will be on January 1st, Christmas will be on January 25th, and so on. Month two will be February, which will be the name of what is now January. Following that will come March, which will have 28 days (and 29 each leap year). What is now June will be renamed to September so as to retain the Fourth of July on its actual date. Other holidays of the like (Not merely holidays that take a date, ones which are synonymous with a particular date. I have no familiarity with any besides the 4th of July) will be checked too. August will be kept on its current month as it is not an ordinal month. What is now September will be December, followed by Undecember, followed by Duodecember.

These, of course, may be changed into the vernacular.

This leaves the Gregorian calendar as it should be.

DF Community Games & Stories / Cupcakes cupcakes cupcakes!
« on: September 22, 2011, 01:37:36 am »
Okay. So after reading the short story Cupcakes, I've decided to do a succession fortress using the My Little Fortress mod! There are some changes, which are most easily guessed by reading the story. That will give you the easiest example.

Having now started to gen the world, other changes will be listed.

I've put all standard races back into the game.

Starting build will be

2 miners
1 wood cutter
1 carpenter
1 mason
1 mechanic
1 farmer

Rest of the points will be put into seeds, drink, food, and tools. Aim is to be self-sufficient by end of the first turn.
