DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: HOW THE FUUUUUU DO YOU MAKE ARENAS!?

Preferably, you build the cages that already have your prisoners inside. When selecting which cage to build, press 'x'. It'll give you a list.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Asshole Engravers?

Could be worse.  They could be engraving regular images onto the dwarves...

This is an exceptional tattoo of dwarves on Urist McBadass' left upper arm. The dwarf is tattooing an image into the dwarf's left upper arm. This relates to that time Urist McDyer carved an image into Urist McBadass' left upper arm with a rusty knife and some dye.

This is a fine tattoo of a goblin saying on Urist McPoser's right lower arm. The goblin saying totally doesn't mean what he thinks it means. The dwarf is laughing.

In most cases, you'll find the top of the adamantine vein somewhere in the third cavern layer. You can explore it the easy way by pitting some kittens, or you can send a military squad to scout. If you can't find any adamantine in the cavern, then you'll have to poke holes into the magma sea and peek inside.

That gives me an idea. Can we tame magma crabs? If so, they'd make excellent magma sea explorers.

Are you getting any announcements after you place the job? Are you using a job manager, and are they alive? Could you have forbid or dumped the materials the workshops are made from(use t to check)?

Oh right! Aren't all items forbidden after a reclaim?

A green glass lobster with a trunk that had deadly dust. When it encountered my ( blind and scarred ) military, it promptly propelled itself off a cliff, broke off a pincer and just sat there for the rest of eternity. Then the game crashed.

Well, first of all, make sure you have the right labours assigned to your dwarves. For brewing, also make sure you have empty barrels or waterproof large pots on hand, as well as a brewable plant ( like a plump helmet ). If all those steps are met, then a dwarf SHOULD eventually make some booze at your still. If they're completely and absolutely refusing to work, it might be because they have no path to their workplace ( make sure no doors are locked, no drawbridges are up, no pits are present, etc )

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: March 11, 2011, 07:23:01 am »
Syruppartner just started it's second year. Most of the fort's important facilities are dug out, but there's still so much stone to move... and with less than 20 dwarves on hand, it's taking way too long. I'm also trying to figure out the best way to irrigate my farm, since there's an underground lake right above it, and a magma sea right below it.

No I'm not gonna irrigate with magma.

Oh wow, glad I got around to reading this whole thread. Definatly gonna follow it now.

I'd also like to request a dwarf. You can name any old dwarf you please and that would be fine, but if you happen to have any male clothesmakers, I'd gladly have one named "Elth".

The tortured souls of the damned do make plump helmets taste better you know.

It's a proven fact.

Just don't stare in your cup barrel of dwarven wine too long...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

For somebody who was missing a foot, he sure kicked a lot of ass.

Also, Necalli, are those shoulderpads made from kittens? Snazzy.

Ahh... I remember the first time I got this message, when I was exploring the first cavern layer. Seeing this small, cramped tunnel slowly be revealed as my dwarves explored around it. It took me a while to muster up the nerve to send a dwarf below, since at that time I had no clue what to expect. For some reason, I find those tunnels oddly atmospheric, even though there's nothing inside them.

...Actually, the fact that they're empty while the rest of the caverns are teeming with life is probably what makes them so creepy to me.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Creatures floating on magma
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:47:00 am »

That's a horse, on magma, floating in open space.

It's actually standing ON the 2/7 tile of magma, slowly burning to death. I pitted it from the z-level above. Don't creatures usually phase through any liquids while falling? Was this something that was fixed in .21 without our knowledge?

I'll do some further testing as the volcano drains.

EDIT: Ah, there we go. Pitting a horse from 2 z-levels above the magma made it phase through around 130 z-levels of magma. But at least now I know pitting something from only one z-level won't make them phase. That's what I think happened, anyway.

I'm really happy about fixing the 'attacks through multiple z-levels' bug. That means giant staircases will be a lot safer. I'll still use ramps to save on pathfinding, but hey, it's still awesome.

A special message addressed to the Trade Guild Master of the Mountainhomes,

As you know, last year, our band of seven left for the wilderness to set up an outpost. Because of budget cuts, we had to make do without an anvil, but we had prepared the magma forging area well before autumn, so that we may begin smithing operations as soon as possible. We had a good stockpile of stone crafts made by our resident stoneworker to offer in exchange for much needed supplies. Like that anvil. Remember that anvil? Oh.

You forgot it.

Your traders had the gall to showcase the nice bar of steel they brought along, which was easily the most valuable thing they had with them. Well, thanks for the steel. It's a shame we can't use it. Because we have no anvil. We can't make an anvil because we have no anvil.

I don't get how you can forget an anvil. It isn't exactly small or inconspicuous. Our anvils are the very basis of our civilization. Our steel is our strength, just as our strength is our steel. When the goblins come and they find no steel to still their blades, you will be held responsible.

Right now, we have absolutely no means to defend ourselves, since, in your infinite wisdom, also decided we wouldn't need any weapons or armour. Because of YOU, our outpost will now be completely defenseless for another year. I am sending a copy of this letter, as well as a stock report and a list of names of those involved to His Majesty the King. Any deaths as a result of our lack of metal will be attributed to you. Punishment for murder is quite severe. I hope you will reflect on your decisions.

Sincerely,
The Overseer of the dwarven outpost of Syruppartner

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Naming conventions
« on: March 09, 2011, 08:35:02 am »
I don't name my dwarves often, but when I do I usually name random notable dwarves after friends or characters from media I like. Some examples...

I named my badass female commander 'Samus' (Metroid)
A Legendary Engraver was 'Nepeta' (MSPaintAdventures)
A marksdwarf/hunter was 'Sniper Wolf' (Metal Gear)

Sometimes I get petty and rename annoying dwarves 'Stupid' or 'Dumbfuck'. I want to be constantly reminded of their failure so I can punish them accordingly.
