In legends mode, export information about the world. One of the files will list all the settlements in the world along with their populations. I presume this is how information was gathered elsewhere in this thread.

Also, when you generate a world, during the finalization process, it also tells you how many living units it exported, hinting at the world's total population.

you can't do legends on a current fortress without abandoning.  If you don't want to copy saves you can also (ESC)->export local image, which puts some text files in your DF folder, one of which has populations.

my previous post was incorrect, it was 250 years, but seems hardly relevant.  I would be interested to see what other people are getting for their goblin populations, and how many years in they are.

I assume from these changes we can infer some things about trap components?  Perhaps bronze serrated disks aren't the (cheap) god-trap now against iron clad goblins?

I'm only in year 3 of my .14 fortress, but I did an image export and checked the current populations list.  after 150 years of history, there are only about 650 goblins spread across 7 settlements, compared to thousands of dwarves, humans, and elves.

Also, forbidden doors don't stop pathing checks which slows things down horribly.

wouldn't this be an easy fix?  or would it introduce new complications to pathing?

i had a weaponsmith mood in my first year, and I hadn't made any steel yet, although I had everything I need to do so.  I forbid every metal bar while I tried to get my furnace operators in gear.  I had pig iron, iron, and bronze, but I was holding out for steel.  If you forbid something while the dwarf is bringing it back to the workshop, he will drop it when he gets back to his shop, and search for another bar.  I was almost ready, but then I accidentally bought a bismuth bar from the caravan and he began the artifact before I noticed he had picked it up.  The result was a bismuth mace that I used to spruce up my meeting room in a weapon trap.  My disappointment in the artifact was outweighed by my happiness at having a +5 dwarf that could churn out masterwork bronze disks en masse.

I've seen this when miners are active as military.  I think I channeled the tile with the food and rebuild a floor over it.  Problem (sort of) solved!

if I select a saved embark profile, do I immediately embark or do I have a chance to slightly modify it?

I've noticed that if materials bought in the saved profile aren't available, then it loads what it can and you have a chance to change things before actually embarking.

so now we need someone to design and optimize a machine/construction that reliably melts away fat without killing the dwarf.  Then it can be perfected and replicated.  Enormous rolls of fat is dwarfy, but melting away the fat with magma without permanent injury is even MORE dwarfy.

I've run forges forty or fifty levels below the surface and had no problem.  I'd rather have it nearer the surface but it's not crippling to have the stuff down there.  I'd be more worried about trying to do a glass industry like this but that's probably okay too.

I'm guessing it would also be possible to dig out a small shaft and drop a 2x2x1 square of sand all the way down to your magma.  Of course, if you do it a bit bigger and with more careful engineering, the same trick can bring magma all the way to the surface.

build a 20 z level staircase above your butcher

pit the animals from there

you'll get a bit more meat and fat, and 5 times the leather.  if you are using bones to decorate, you'll get 5x your value in that too.

Well, I was kind of planning on using that exact trap for the very reason that it instantly cleans and reloads. If trolls end up destroying the floor grates, then there's no point in using that trap design at all.

put the grates behind fortifications... and wait for the 1/7 magma to evaporate.

If trolls destroy floor hatches, that would make the pressure-plate toilet trap less effective against them.
