designate the pit zone over open space.  Build the cage next to the open space.  Check the goblin's name.  Go to the pit.  Select the goblin for pitting.  Don't need to bother with disarming him.

dig a trap under the ground near him, get it all set up, chain a bait animal, then dig out the last tile allowing him to path to the trap.  then do something fun with him.

a dump is a zone that you designate with the i key.  Check it out on magmawiki.

can flux be imported in 31?

Dig for magma.  Check map for sand to make glass.  Possibly build tree farm for clear glass production, although wood can be imported in bulk.  Do you have any iron on your map?  The other thing that worked quite well for some people in 40d was to buy and melt any trade good of the metal you need from traders, as well as melt invader armor.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Weapon Traps
« on: May 04, 2010, 01:57:45 pm »
glass trap weapons are garbage, I don't know why i thought they might be decent.  I need to check if spiked glass balls are effective.  bronze axes and serrated discs are incredibly effective against ambushes.  Stonefall traps still work.  I had two trolls set off 3 of them, one troll had a badly wounded arm or leg, the other passed out from a bruised heart right in front of my axedwarf (perfect decapitation).  I assume the exceptional/masterwork iron and steel trap components im churning out now will work just fine.

I'm thinking about making my first line of weapon traps be steel spikes to put some early hurt on the mounts that siegers like to ride.  Also, since I've heard that you can do everything except actually kill with blunt damage, it might be a good idea to make traps mostly with blunt damage, so that the military can actually get the cleanup kills.

I'll have to check on making giant spiked silver balls.

also, word of warning.  I had a dwarf in full adam/steel get his left arm shattered by a lasher because he was wearing a breastplate instead of a mail shirt.

yeah i just start my farm wherever i can see a pond, or I go ahead and start an above-ground one, since prickle berries and strawberry wine is good too.  Later just build a level for farming where you can easily flood it in one go from a cave.

DF Gameplay Questions / megaconstruction inside a magma pipe?
« on: May 04, 2010, 11:54:33 am »
basically i want to make a tower or structure or prison inside the pipe, as well as put whatever else i can think of in there (glass jail, glass noble rooms, swimming pool encased in glass, etc).  Im sure this is possible since a magma pipe can be drained and eventually refills.  My question is on the method.  Can I drain the pipe into the magma sea?  im thinking if the magma sea acts as an infinite magma source, I should be able to put the pipe magma into it and then draw from it artificially to refill the pipe without actually affecting the level of the sea.  If this works, I could also build a pump stack to speed up refilling the pipe, as well as overfill it should i wish to extend the height.  The alternative option would be to dig out an artificial magma pipe, build my construction there, and then fill that from the magma sea.

only time i ran into one in adventurer mode i cut his stinger off with my first blow.  He didn't hurt much after that.

update, it seems that if you build plenty of extra coffers and wait, eventually soap will get placed, resolving the issue.  So far they've stored one of the bars, so hopefully they'll do the other one soon.

Can`t you build upwards?

not if you want to have a tricked out launching platform.

I wasn't really interested in DF as I just couldn't get over the text interface.  It wasn't till recently I downloaded it with a mode that had most of the graphics replaced by tiles..

I played the damn thing for 18 hours, though the night.  Now I am playing it again using the text interface as its a bit faster and clearer in some respects.

Just thought I rant:P

are you me?

I made about 20 buckets of lye and had a stockpile for just lye filled with buckets, and no barrels.  I ordered up soap through the manager and ignored about a year of error announcements.  Then suddenly, miraculously, my dwarves produced two bars of soap.  I say miraculously because there is no indication if they had actually managed to fill a barrel with lye.  Whatever worked for those two bars wasn't happening continuously because only two of my order of five were made.  Anyway, now I'm trying to get my dwarves to put the soap in my hospital so they will stop playing pass the soap.  I think the problem is that because so many need to use it or want to use it, the soap keeps getting tasked for one of the useless jobs, and so its never available for a dwarf to get the job to move it to the hospital.

The hospital says   Soap: 0/5700 (whatever this means)

I've also got tons of available coffers in the hospital, which the dwarves have been filling with useful supplies.  I've even got them to put the soap in a stockpile inside the hospital, but that doesn't seem to help.  Any ideas on how to get them to store the soap?

On the plus side, my team of doctors fully healed a guy with three compound fractures, so that was very encouraging.  His buddy is in infinite surgery though.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: quick fix for monkeys
« on: May 01, 2010, 02:19:25 pm »
Make a military squad  with some of  your miners,
assign their  picks to  them and  use  them  as a squad  to kill the monkey.
Picks are deadly ;)

picks are deadly.  In one of my first ambushes I had a talented unarmored miner outside fleeing from some goblins.  They caught her, but because of her mining skill she was able to parry and counterstrike each of them.  She smashed the first in the foot, crushing/shattering the bone putting him into 'extreme pain.'  The second one she hit in the thigh, shattering bone though the armor leggings and rupturing an artery, who then fainted while she ran away unscratched.  By the time my military got there the goblins had recovered somewhat and were still able to put 3 of my dwarves in hospital.

so basically friendly fire.  fair enough, i was kind of hoping the spike trap gets some advantage against huge sieges or megabeasts or something.  Do they jam like regular traps?  also i've read a spike trap will hit any and everything thats on top of it when it goes, ie can spear like 20 goblins at once.  to weapon traps also do this or do they have a limit of number of attacks per 'step?'
