DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Firesnakes! What do?
« on: October 02, 2014, 12:12:20 am »
So I dug out a tomb area deep near SMR.  See firesnakes.  Move tomb up several levels where i see no snakes.  Build tomb and jail.  Then firesnake shows up wandering between some prison chains and a green glass magmapump.  But they can melt glass.

make a ton of regular cloaks so your dwarves all have fresh cloaks then no one will claim the adamantine one.  Forbidding it will also prevent dwarves from claiming it.  Also DF hack should have something to clear the owner.

PPS HOLY FUCK the dwarf that the mayor turned into a hammer was the MAYOR'S MOTHER.
I wonder if the mayor got depressed again after his mother was reported dead...

No, completely ecstatic from the mood.  Enough to console 4 of the mother's friends without dropping from ecstatic.  Including the grieving father.  They didn't all become happy, but they all "felt a lot better afterward."  Might have helped that the life's wish of the mayor was to create an artifact.  The mayor did get a negative thought for losing mother to tragedy.

If a fell mood could claim a FB in the first place, it would probably use whatever properties that beast had for bones or leather.  For FBs its probably standard bone/leather.

DF General Discussion / FB Duel and Fell Mood

So this just happened in my fort...

I've sealed off an area of the third cavern layer.  There is a wall 3 blocks high separating the fortress from two forgotten beasts.  A towering alligator with spittle and a feathered, shelled serpent with poison gas.  My militia of 6 bronze clad axelords is assembled should they climb over the wall.  Behind them in is my mayor, who is in a fell mood and working furiously on an artifact.  Beyond that lies a bridge leading to the main fortress.

The beasts are fighting each other.

The feathered serpent was protected by its shell for quite a bit, and bit off a few of the alligator's toes.  It inflicted some serious damage, bruising the lungs and shattering some limbs.  The alligator fought back, became enraged.  They traded an eye for an eye.  But the alligator caught the serpent in its jaws and began shaking it around.  Ultimately it "scratched" at the neck while clamped to the head, decapitating the unfortunate gigantic serpent.

I hoped the alligator would bleed out, given that its neck was "gouting" and its legs were "gushing" its blood.  But even as I write this the beast is beginning to heal and the bleeding is slowing.  However the beast is also numb and drowsy from the poison gas of the serpent.  I'm hastily unblocking the wall so I can finish it off while its damaged.  However its a big gamble, if the mayor or several military dwarves die now, that will start a tantrum spiral for sure.

The mayor has completed a masterwork dwarf bone hammer Othashmilolebal, "The Ungodly Messianic-Reverence."  My mayor was very unhappy, mostly from consoling so many upset dwarves (some people dont like being haunted the dead).  Now she's ecstatic and can cheer up my other dwarves, so I've got that going for me.

The beast is continuing to heal but very drowsy and numb.  Its eye is completely healed. The BronzeGuard assembled, the wall is down.

Charge.

The beast is asleep, and is quickly hacked to pieces.  One more notch in the =bronze battle axe= of my militia commander.  Now there shall be *forgotten beast roasts* for all !

PS:  As a cherry on top, two of my dwarves instantly ran out into the caverns to clean up the pools of forgotten beast blood, spittle, and extract.  All hail Toady for making this miracle possible.  And the dwarf that got turned into the Hammer was just reported dead.

PPS HOLY FUCK the dwarf that the mayor turned into a hammer was the MAYOR'S MOTHER.

never make training axes.

Or turn off woodcutting, change the axe lord to use specific weapon or specify the material type plus toggle on "exact match."

Then turn on woodcutting again.

Tower siege left after 3+ seasons of siege.  It was okay, there was work to be done underground.  Then as my civilians were up on the surface collecting wood from the newly grown trees and vomiting, a wereass attacked.  Killed two dwarfs and injured another before being hacked to bits in its monster form.  Sadly one of the dead was my fortress manager and skilled weaver/clothier.  tragic.

Lots of unhappy dwarfs.  Mostly because of miasma in the caverns and a few deaths and hauntings.  The bedrooms are completed and there's a nice well room and dining room, but it hasn't been enough.  None of them are miserable though so I've been not too worried.  My assistant chief medical dwarf was elected as the new mayor and has done a good job of cheering people up, but it clearly has taken its toll as she just decided to create and artifact.  Except instead of building the artifact-quality mail shirt she'd been dreaming about her whole life, she decided to murder a miner and turn his body into something...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Ecstatic dwarf cancels job: Grieving
« on: September 29, 2014, 08:41:53 am »
I believe the "grieving" state is caused by seeing the remains of a loved one (and possibly also their ghost?), in the same way that another dwarf might be "horrified". It's got nothing to do with how happy they are.

I'm sure, but I was still tickled that he didn't get a new thought for "grieving."  But I guess that's what the next update is for.  As for horrified, you do get the blue explanation point and the text notification under their name.  I definitely didn't see anything like this, just a regular cancellation.

DF Gameplay Questions / Ecstatic dwarf cancels job: Grieving
« on: September 28, 2014, 02:55:16 pm »
The only negative thought is "haunted by a dead sibling recently."  its the lowest thought on the list.  This is also the only dwarf where i've seen "grieving."  "Horrified" and other such interruptions are also states that seem to last for a while and are viewable.  Aside from the cancellation notice I can't tell that anything is wrong with this dwarf.  He got this cancellation before, several seasons ago.

Oh yeah it was his sister that is now a ghost, and he gets the cancellations when he walks by her mangled partial skeleton.

That might have something to do with it.

Keep in mind that hunter is a uniform, like miner and woodcutter.  They won't necessarily arm up until they need to hunt, but they can claim things.

Threw me off because I never even have hunters.  So I never considered the default ammunition assignment would be screwing up my marksdwarves.

Can confirm issue still exists.  Its looks much like it has for years.  Hundreds of bolts, only like 4 stacks available in ammo selection screen.

Here's some screenshots.  I'd made a ton of bone bolts, most of them got binned.  Had to use dumping to empty the bins, moving the stockpile and such did not convince the dwarves to unbin the ammo.  Still, newly  made ammo will get picked right up.

File uploaded:  http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9794

Thank you for the save. At a glance, I see that you've assigned 200 bolts to your hunters (you currently have no hunters) and 100 bolts to your first squad, while your fortress only has a total of ~350 bolts, some of which are currently forbidden. The "Hunter Squad", which is assigned 100 bolts, is unable to collect that many since no unforbidden/unassigned bolts remain. I canceled the hunter reservations and the "Hunter Squad" streamed down to pick up the newly-freed bolts directly from the bins.

In short, this save is an example of insufficient bolts, not a bin-storage bug.

woah woah woah WHAT?  I thought the list was for ELLIGIBLE ammo, not for assigned ammo.  So you're saying ammo stacks sitting in a stockpile/bin/wherever that are NOT currently equipped or tasked can still be "assigned," and thus not available elsewhere?  This would actually explain what I'm seeing.  But that does explain the weirdness with the ammo lists.  Although still some possible issues with bins as they wouldn't take ammo out of a non-stockpiled bin to add it to a stockpile that accepts ammo and no bins, but i could have just been impatient.  Still, amazing.  I had before just addressed the issue by making shit tons of ammo since that solved it, it also explain why hunters never had trouble getting ammo while marksdwarves did.  Still, I've seen this since 2010 and no one explained that's how the ammo lists worked.

4/7 makes them freak out and cancel jobs, but they shouldn't be drowning.  the way I've done it in the past is to have one of my meeting areas capable of being sealed off and flooded in a controlled manner.  Once they're all really thirsty I'll let them out.
