Hey, what would I have to do to install this for 40.18?

DF General Discussion / Re: The Lost Tech - Elephant Pump?

If I remember correctly, they had set up a corridor with pressure plates that the elephants would try to path through.  Only, pathing over one set of plates closed one end of the tunnel and opened the other end, so the elephants kept walking back and forth, triggering some mechanism or other.

I notice he added only one entry for each species.  So no broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussels sprouts, or kohlrabi, just Cabbage.

I don't know if I'd be willing to give up the gamey conveniences of modern MMOs. Fast travel in particular I'd miss. I get annoyed by MMOs that "waste" my limited playing time - but I'm an older and grumpier gamer than I used to be. I'd have probably liked this a decade ago.

If you have the time, I'd love for you to read this post on the ToA forums:

http://trialsofascension.com/forum/threads/terrible-features-great-game.2123/

It really does a good job of summarizing why I think these features (which would each be annoyances placed right into a modern MMO) work together and foster the kind of deep gameplay that I think MMOs should be able to provide.

You had me until you mentioned the subscription.

Heres a comment the lead designer recently made about the choice to go subscription:

We went sub, which will be roughly $12/mo, due to the nature of the design. Perma-death and innovations really change the core way you must look at a game like ToA. When there is perma-death on the line, you want everyone to be on an even playing field as possible. The typical response to that is "than go with a vanity cash shop". The problem with a cash shop, even just vanity items, is that it cannibalizes the potential of our innovations system. We'd rather have players receiving and propagating new items within the designs of the game instead of just paying for them.

I definitely understand why you aren't excited about the game.  I have had a lot of fun with subscription-based games and I definitely don't think $12/month is too much to ask, if the game is good.

They haven't locked down pricing.  I think they were talking about $15 a month though, or alternatively, a few bucks for ten hours of playtime.

Also, they're planning to do something like PLEX from Eve.  You can buy a Writ of Time for one month's subscription's worth of real money, then sell it ingame for game money... alternatively, if you have a big ingame revenue stream, you can buy these writs of time with ingame money and use them to play without paying RL money.

Check out my old topic here or just go to their Kickstarter page!

This game is pretty much the MMO of my dreams, and I'd love you guys to check it out.  You can read all about the game at http://www.trialsofascension.com/guide ...

I seriously hope their Kickstarter succeeds. I've been waiting to play this game for ten years, and spent hours and hours on the forums discussing and hashing out various parts of their design.  I feel about ToA the same way I do about Dwarf Fortress, which is why I'm here proselytizing to you guys.

Maybe I'll see you guys ingame someday.. I intend to open an alchemy shop.

Hey,

just thought I'd bump this thread as we get closer to the kickstarter date... It should be sometime in the next couple weeks.

They've redone their faq section with a game info page that really summarizes nicely the salient features of the game...

Also, the kickstarter is going to start this summer sometime!

Been watching this. Got a little tired of the forums there and will poke my head back in once there's some videos/demos/articles demonstrating the practical, nitty-gritty details of gameplay.

Honestly I think they should go the route of Embers of Caerus and Pathfinder Online and do an initial Kickstarter for a small amount of money in order to do a nice-looking and representative tech demo, so that they can shop it around to investors and maybe do a second kickstarter for the money to make the actual game.  MMOs cost a heck of a lot to make, and there's only so much they can do in their spare time before they have any funding...

Otherwise, I think they face a problem: in order to raise money on Kickstarter, they have to have solid preliminary assets to show off, which it's difficult to produce until they make money enough to pay for them.

Either way it's going to be a while before we see some solid gameplay videos / better screenshots / character creators / whatever.

Hey people,

New article detailing plans for infectious diseases and syndromes!

http://trialsofascension.com/news/plagues-diseases

I'm really excited about this kind of stuff... i've never played an MMO with plague and contagion before.

The last time I played a game that only allowed one character per account but multiple accounts per player, the multiboxers were far and away the most powerful players in the game. They were able to solo the unsoloable and completely broke the economy. It was practically a form of pay-to-win.

I agree that it unbalances things a bit... the reason why they are allowing multiple accounts is so that families who share the same credit card can play together.  Hopefully multiboxers won't get too far ahead of the rest of the playerbase.

For me, the most exciting thing about the new release is multi-tile trees... and the new climbing mechanics.  The world is going to be so different.

Hey, there's just been a clarification from the developers about their plans for how many characters you can have per server...

Quote from: Brax
Note to self: On the next poll, only allow votes, no posts.

Seriously, thanks for the feedback everyone. You've been .... passionate with your responses.

The decision at this time (always subject to change):

- We are going to strive for a minimum of two servers. One will allow multiple characters (in the ballpark of 3-4) and the other will be a single character server.

- As we grow and add new races, the multiple characters server(s) (MCS) will be given more character slots. The single character server(s) (SCS) will not.

- We will allow purchasing of multiple accounts per credit card.

- We will allow multiple connections from the same IP to account for family/friends playing together from one location.

- We are still undecided if we will allow multiple simultaneous logins from the same computer. We are currently leaning heavily towards not allowing it.

I'm really happy about this because I would much rather play on a server where most people only have one character... I like the idea that you have to depend on other players to do things that your character isn't specialized in, instead of just logging into your alt.

29
Actually, I had an idea regarding other races, though it probably wouldn't work with the lack of name/persistent rep deal. Allow the players to unlock races they can switch into as they grow stronger. Though, its like 3 am, and I'm dead tired, so I think it sounds better to me then it is.

Well.. one of the original races was a doppelganger who could shift into any other humanoid race... unless you had really good perception, you'd think that the doppelganger was someone else every time you saw them shifted to a different form.  I don't know if the doppelganger is still planned at all though....

I'm sure there has to be a bona fide bread recipe!!

I wonder what it does..
