DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread
« on: June 21, 2011, 02:52:06 pm »
It does not show up on the unit menu. My military still has orders to patrol over it's corpse and are not attacking anything. I have plenty of space in the refuse pile. I just keep getting spammed by canceled orders from the forgotten beast interrupting and my dwarves flee from the sight of it.

When you go to the announcement screen and zoom in on the announcement for a job cancellation due to forgotten beast, does it zoom in on that beast?

If so, might want to dig up underneath it and cause it to fall down a level then put a floor over it, or dig above it and drop a piece of floor on it.

I tried digging around it but my miners get scared and cancel the mining job until the get far enough away, calm down, take the job again, see the dead forgotten beast corpse, run away screaming URIST CANCELED DIG INTERRUPTED BY FORGOTTEN BEAST (yes my dwarves speak in third person)

Make a copy of the save game at this point.  upload it to dffd and put in a mantis bug about it and link the save.

Don't try to dig around it, dig below it to make it fall, or above it to drop a piece of cavern on it.

I still like the idea, even if it fails.

I like the idea, ONLY if it fails.  In this case, losing might not be fun, but it's the only sane choice.

Even if you discount criminals and terrorists - to you REALLY want untraceable, untrackable money in the hands of politicians and corporations and governments?

Also sign me up. I need some experience at killing dorfs. So far, every dorf death I've had are due to a pathing error or an ambush.

Didn't you freeze one in an aquifier too?  ;D

JFC just what we need in the world.  Untraceable, unstoppable money to feed criminals and terrorists.  Most dangerous project ever seems to be an appropriate description.
They mostly use dollars, though. I say ban the USD!

Yeah. There is nothing inherently evil with using bitcoins as a currency- or anything else, really- so it would be a waste of time and money to try and inforce a ban on them. If people are using it to do illegal things, then they are doing illegal things, things that are, by definition, (and not to strain the point,) illegal.

I can only hope that the constant security failures will cause this project to fail and nobody will come up with a clever idea that is both secure and trackless.  Trackless money is a world security nightmare.  Following money trails is how a LOT of criminals and terror organizations are tracked down.

I still have to get a dagger so give me some time. Also, I thought you can only assign a CotG when there's a mayor.

I'll just draft you into the main military for now and get you training.

Training the sherrif to be a good fighter is not healthy for your future lawbreakers, heh.

I see a great deal of !FUN! in the future of this fort, lol.

Never worked with a mist generator before - does it also clean the dwarves?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Two Questions in dire need of answer.
« on: June 21, 2011, 02:25:59 pm »
Part of the !FUN!  of DF is discovering things yourself and inventing new ways to do something, or on occasion discovering that you know how to do things others didn't know were possible.

I frequently assist newer players in the forums.  I'm also frequently incorrect about some of the more complex aspects of the game, and generally avoid the 2010 military as much as possible.  However, recently I discovered that a lot of the other experienced people here were not aware that it was possible to carve fortifications into a constructed wall.  But last night I was introduced to a very clever method of breaking through an aquifier.  It's give and take here, even amongst some of the most experienced players.
pray tell, what is this way of breaking through an aquifer?

knowing me, I've probably found new ways of doing multiple things in DF, but I thought they were already discovered.
knowing me, that is.

Two methods actually - here's a thread that references both.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: A Better Magma Pump Stack
« on: June 21, 2011, 07:39:27 am »

Just out of curiosity, if the issue is a heat issue, maybe just dig some 1x1 stairwells around an old style pump stack and fill them with magma?  Static magma that never moves and maintains the temperature of the main stack.

Not sure if this would be useful or not though.  It might be good for forts with really huge pump stacks that are of the old style, you could heat their walls and get rid of the heat effects without having to completely disassemble them.

Does the wet effect have the same FPS-affecting symptoms?

Difficult to make a weapon trap in a bath, unless you're willing to drain it down to 1/7 to allow the construction to work. As far as I know, dwarves refuse to even designate building of any kind in more than 1/7 water, or work on such.

Agreed, you would build the trap first, then the bath.  Not sure it would work the same way, but it might.  You would only do this if carried weapons are not wet and cleaned by a normal bath

DF Announcements / Re: Cado's Magical Journey: A Threetoe Story

Wow :)

Can't wait to see this stuff implemented, and the story was cool too :)

Have you ever considered a Dwarf Fortress franchise for writing novels?

Sure, they would have to be toned down a *little* from ingame things that some players do, but the framework of the game is already more than sufficient to build some good stories around it.

but artifacts cannot be dumped, I thought...

That's right, and is a right royal pain when you have a weapon covered in dangerous forgotten beast extract that can't be destroyed because the dwarf who killed said beast named it with his dying breath, thus bestowing artifact status on it :E

It sounds like a cliche, but I honestly think the only answer here is magma.

Have the wielder walk through a bath, or build a weapon trap in a bath.  I believe walking through 3 deep water washes off all blood / vomit / goo from everything a dwarf is carrying, as well as themselves?  Not sure about the weapon trap in a bath area though.

There is a bug right now with large gems not moving around properly.  This might be related - at least in the case of the gem.

  The face veil.  Hrm.

1) Create a stockpile for veils in a lockable room.  Disable veils wherever they might otherwise be stored.  After dwarves move all other veils, lock the room.

2) Create a uniform for one of your nobles that isn't wearing a veil that includes a veil and then see if they go pick it up and wear it.

An online currency.

Basically : a currency who is hard to make, purely electronic and linked to the cost of calculus.

I see a big flaw in this project : the inflation will be linked to the cost of calculus, who may lower much too quickly.
Other than that, this may indeed become very big.

JFC just what we need in the world.  Untraceable, unstoppable money to feed criminals and terrorists.  Most dangerous project ever seems to be an appropriate description.

DF Suggestions / Elephant men
« on: June 21, 2011, 06:26:10 am »
I've never seen elephant men.  If they don't exist, can they be made to exist?

Just the thought of a biped intelligent tool user with a gore attack and three wielding appendages (hands and trunk) makes me think they would be impressive enemies.

Big enough to fight with two two-handed weapons and wield a shield with their trunk - AND if you get into close melee with you, they just stab you with their tusks.

Their potential for charge attacks should be pretty nice too.

You could just add them in and pretend they have always ruled the elves, but have just recently revealed themselves  :o
