Life Advice / Re: How to deal with aggressive dogs?

Sorry, I can't resist linking a video about cattle prods.  There are LOTS of videos of people using cattle prods on themselves and others.  Pretty crazy.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlLnjOST-is&NR=1&feature=fvwp

I think a cattle prod might be useful, not sure how portable it would be, or how legal.

From what I've seen, most Tea Party persons are a lot more tightly focused on spending issues than anything else.  If you look at what they support, for the most part, they support it for fiscal reasons.

That doesn't mean I agree with them more often than I agree with other politicians in office, but I actually respect a fairly large number of tea party members that I've met because they generally aren't nearly as hypocritical as other politicians.  I give it maybe two or three election cycles and if the tea party still exists, they will be just as hypocritical as everyone else, and nothing meaningful will have actually been done to fix social security, medicare, medicaid, healthcare, the tax system, energy reliance, immigration, or the failing infrastructure system.

I need to make some memorials, but I can't. Where is the option to do so? All I can place is slabs.

First make a slab, (mason shop)

Then engrave the slab (craftdwarf shop)

Then place the engraved slab

I think you have to expand the slab list to see which ones are engraved, been a while since I needed one.

It's just too bad that we cannot simply apply lava magma to Washington DC to get rid of all our nobles.

Personally, I can out aggressive any non-trained dog or dogs because I have no fear of them if there are less than three or four, and they can smell it.  I probably couldn't manage more than 4 medium sized dogs because I would start to be concerned, and, again, they will smell it.

Sounds as if you aren't at much risk, but your wife is.

I'd suggest mace and a friggin loud airhorn.

Failing all of that carry a shockstick (the below links are examples, I have no suggestions to make for products)

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&lr=&q=air+horn&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=91777244215129775&sa=X&ei=CBygTYPJEMSCgAeXl_TZBQ&ved=0CEgQ8wIwBA#

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/433931334/Electric_Shock_Stick_BR_09.html

If you wake people up almost every night, in the middle of the night with a massive airhorn blast (and make sure to spray their doors with mace when you spray the dogs) they might start to seriously consider taking care of the dog problem.

If the shock stick worries you, carry a baseball bat or a golf club

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Un-assign Dogs?

Haha mmkay, thanks for the help ^_^. Kinda annoying to see those dogs follow my hunter everywhere though

haha I made the mistake once of having one dwarven hunter train every one of my war dogs for a few years.

Every time he left to go hunting, 100+ dogs would follow him.  I ended up having to make a bunch of ropes, assign the dogs, and started making lots of puppy leather bags.

Would really like to see what some of you folks with an artistic bent can do with this:

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=81855.0

I suppose this is something of a cross post, but I'm hoping for some hilarity, and I saw that there were over 400 pages of fan art related stuff in this thread.

Ever since I saw that goblins would be able to wear troll-wool clothing, I've had this terrible fascination as to what a troll really looks like.

Seeing that I sent a donation to DF today, I'm going to ask that instead of sending me a crayon drawing by mail, post here a link to a drawing of a typical scene of goblins shearing troll wool.  Since I have seen the crayon art, I'll be perfectly fine with someone else doing the drawing, if it's indicated that someone else's work supports the image as a decent representation.

I've sent a forum message with a link to this thread.

Perhaps some of you artsy folks would like to post up your own images of goblins shearing troll wool in order to save the DF team some crayon work?

Remember, please keep it safe for work  :o

Bonus points if someone creates a goblin-shearing-troll image in the style of Norman Rockwell!

The artifact is made of code depicting a toad slaving over keys.  It is banded with giraffe egg shell and menaces with pure win.

Goblinite for iron.

Buy every weapon quality metal item the humans or dwarves bring.  Melt down the iron toy forges and steel flutes and make your war machine!

Let our dwarves beat plowshares into swords!

I always mod my worlds to have no caverns, and noted recently that there's a setting for mineral occurrence.

In the first fort I created after noticing this, I set metal abundance to it's highest level, and literally 1/4 of the stone I excavated was iron.

Any way to stop milita deaths from making civilians insane and violent? 2 forts lost because of this MADNESS.

Give dwarves their own stuff in their own rooms and keep the alcohol and food plentiful, and they tend to stay pretty happy.  Especially if you carve their rooms from rock, then engrave them and put a statue in the middle overlapping everything in their room with a statue garden.

On average, how many z-levels should it take to reach magma? I hear talk of people getting magma forges up and running in the first year, and pumping magma up to the surface, but every embark I have no less than 80 or so z-levels of earth between me and the hot stuff. Do I just have poor luck?

At work I have a weak PC, so I generate my worlds with no caverns at all.  This limits me to surface crops, but gives me access to magma maybe 20 z-levels deep.  Haven't tried with the newest builds to see if there's a big FPS difference, but up until v.22 there was a huge difference for the work machine.

Basically it seems as if magma is located under caverns, always, so if you have caverns, your magma will be farther down.

It seems that my animals keep starving to death with hundreds of grass tiles still in their pastures. It looks like they eat out the top-left corner of the pasture and promptly die  :-\

I haven't seen this in my pastures at all - is it a pasture from a save in a previous version?  Have you tried removing the zone and recreating it?

Something I used to do which caused me much confusion in the past was create a single-tile zone inside the zone I originally meant to create because I was using extra keystrokes while generating zones - you sure you only have one zone there, not two, with one being a single tile zone?
