DF Modding / Re: .20--unusual egg laying

Body size is too small at 500 to produce any useful meat or components.  The best you're gonna get at that size is an occasional skull.

Try upping the size of adults to 2000 or 3000.

Obviously none of you are nerdy enough to recognize that the picture is actually a Dwarven ship.

A Dwarven space ship to be precise, powered by a magic forge consecrated to the Dwarven gods.

That's a spelljammer ship from second edition Dungeons and Dragons.

The Elves fly a great big giant crystal butterfly.  Dwarves get a great big mountain.

Where in the files can you modify the number of dwarves you start with?
You have to edit the executable file directly, there isn't an easy text file for settings.

Aaand  I just found out how in the modding section: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=78311.0

Seems simple enough.

Neat!  I can now finally do the hermit challenge without feeling guilty about killing off the other six members of the expedition!

What you do is set Kill/Eat Sapient to ACCEPTABLE and have goblin roasts forever!

I draft new immigrants with martial skills into the military.  I usually end up with several squads, separated into male and female groups.  I nickname the males "vikings" and the females "amazons" for ease of reference.  I keep them apart because I don't want them getting married (which happens a lot to soldiers in close proximity with one another).  The female soldiers tend to carry their babies with them into battle with distressing regularity, so I tend to use them only for duty inside the fortress itself.

The non-hunter and non-miner civilians, I also draft into military squads, but for the most part, let them continue on working regular jobs.  With training turned off in the military schedule menu, they train individually in their assigned barracks whenever they have nothing else to do, so I never have any idle dwarves.

I also enable all jobs for everyone, and let them work on everything.  Once someone hits a high level of skill in a profession (master or better), they get their own workshop/bedroom/dining room unit.  Until then, everyone sleeps in one large room (though each bed is set to be a 1x1 bedroom).

The miners and hunters don't work well with the military for some reason.  I organize the miners into their own squad with no weapon assigned (they'll sometimes use the picks they're carrying if activated, but it's not reliable).  Hunters annoy me because they leave bolts scattered all around the map, so I don't use them.

So other than the few specialized crafters, I don't really pay attention much to what an individual dwarf is up to.  I tend to order all crafting through the manager screen.

Hmm...interesting.

I think my next fort will be a hunting lodge with 7 Hunters.

And turkeys.  Because turkeys are awesome.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bee Questions

No...but yes.

You have to dig from above and create a pit that opens up to the sun.

Then you can roof it over and it still counts as outside.  I've got beehives underground next to my kitchen using this method (and learned to put a door leading to that room because bees kept stinging my cooks).

You can also use this technique to grow outdoor plants indoors.

Huh... Fancy seeing you here. (Reads and sometimes comments on the comic in question)

Aack!  You've found me!  (hurries to get the next strip up).

Thanks to .19 my comic is late in updating yet again...

Honestly, someone should create a mod to put a real-time clock on the screen.  I sat down to try the newest version at 6pm, thinking to play for only 45min or so...next thing I know it's past midnight, I forgot to eat dinner and I didn't have enough time to draw.

/sigh

The good news though is that I've found a new favorite industry in the poultry business.  Chicken and Turkeys are awesome.  Yaks and Caribou, not so much.  Rabbits and Cavies are a disappointment (they give no meat or hide?  cmon!).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What counts as 'Outside Acess' for hives?
« on: February 27, 2011, 09:39:12 pm »
I dug a big pit.

Then I covered the top of it completely with a stone floor.

The bottom of the pit still counts as outside and I was able to have my bee hive underground next to my mushroom farms.

Oh man, how did I miss this one. This is a great style of coloring, I like it very much.

Unfortunately that means this is not a DF dwarf.

Proper DF dwarves are naked or armored, nothing in between.

(nice drawing though!)

Joking.

(maybe)

I can't decide if this is a step up or down from mermaid harvesting operations.  Either way, I feel dirty.
