DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tantrum spiral prevention/solutions

Did something change in the recent version?

Giant dining halls with statues and engravings aren't enough anymore?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Confessions of a DF player.

Whenever I get a breeding pair of whatever (cows usually, but sometimes horses), I always try to breed for the traits Gigantic, Fat, and Muscular.  This produces the highest amount of meat and fat when butchering animals.

But I have never actually butchered a Gigantic, Muscular, Fat anything...

I always have too much meat/fat from just culling the animals with undesired traits.  My dwarves are breeding a super race of delicious, juicy animals that they have never, ever tasted.

You could take your computer monitor and put it on its side...

Put this up on the wiki.

Seriously.

Not entirely sure, but I think what's happening is that they do one thing first.

Then the fact that you have it on repeat means that it gets requed again.

But they work on the second thing.  Requeing again after it is done.

I know that if I assign a task in a workshop like:
Bed (r)
Bin (r)
Bucket
Bucket
Bucket

Then I'll get the three buckets eventually made.  It doesn't make an infinite amount of Beds until it runs out of materials.

I assume that the same thing applies to smelters.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: immigration happens too fast

You can into the init files and set max population to a number you're comfortable with.

You can just adjust it higher whenever you want more immigrants.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How many of you use tilesets?
« on: November 21, 2010, 09:18:09 pm »
I don't play with tilesets.

I'm used to the standard version.  Don't really consider it roughing it.

You can also do the old trick of installing an expensive lever in the room to raise the value and just keep installing mechanisms on it that do nothing.  The dwarves only care about the value of objects installed in the room, not their function.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves Not Releasing Cow in Cage
« on: November 15, 2010, 06:39:23 pm »
Or you can reassign the cow to an already built cage or restraint and then unassign him once he's moved.

I usually have a built cage right next to my butcher/farmer's workshop for storing all my excess animals that I'm not currently using.  One cage is apparently all you need to store an infinite number of animals.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: flies

By proper food storage, I'm assuming you mean barrels?

Also, what happens if cats are dead on your world?  At least, cats were not an option on embark...

Do I build a giant fly swatter (i.e. drawbridge set to a lever?).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Useful design notes

Ramps are easier to defend...
I'd just like to point out that IRL defending from the bottom of the ramp, or even the top of one is much more dangerous than stairs. If you are at the bottom, the enemy has the high ground, and thus, an advantage. You don't want them to have an advantage.

This only matters if you're a Jedi.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: down sides to reveal?
« on: July 26, 2010, 05:47:49 pm »
Yeah, DON'T UNPAUSE!

You can designate future dig spots and make all sorts of notes, and as long as you don't unpause the game before unrevealing it, you won't get the discovering the super fun zone message and spawing clowns to destroy your FPS.

You can reduce the number of cavern layers as well to get it smaller.
