DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dragon fortress
« on: September 02, 2006, 09:21:00 am »
Of course, firebreathing dragons replacing dwarves isn't really THAT great an idea.  I've been tinkering with it, too, and the big problem comes when a dragon notices a raccoon has crept into the food storage area.  Because his reaction is to incinerate it.  And by "it", I mean "the food storage area".

Of course, dragons reduced to hunting rats for food was pretty funny.

Oh, I see!  My sheriff got promoted to Captain of the Guard.  I hadn't realized they were the same thing, and there was no message (maybe there should be?).

Thank you!

DF Suggestions / Mayor and Guards
« on: August 21, 2006, 05:53:00 pm »
I just had a mayor show up, demanding 8 fortress guards.  Unfortunately, I have no Captain of the Guard, dooming my mayor to a bloody and violent self-inflicted death.

Would it be possible to add "has a Captain of the Guard" to the pre-requisites for a mayor showing up?

It might also be worth going through the other nobles, in case something else like that pops up.

I've been getting those messages, too.  But I just saw the probable reason: a couple dwarves were hauling gems to be stored in a bin, and a third dwarf decided to move the bin from furniture storage to gem storage at the same time.  The gem carriers lost track of the bin while it was being moved.

My current adventurer has a great name:
Begu Halthad Dazetawki Takru, "Begu Nobleaged the Brilliant Rose of Justices".  Of course, to make up for that, he's based out of the town of Worugirus, "Snuggledsaviors".  I'm disappointed; he's saved them from an ettin, a giant, and a zombie elite bowman, and he still hasn't gotten snuggled yet.

To be fair, there's no way I could have strangled it if I hadn't knocked it out cold first.

I was a little disappointed that I was able to strangle a hydra to death.  Things like hydra and ettins should be almost impossible to strangle because of their multiple heads/necks.

Bug report:

When your adventurer is tough enough, higher level townsfolk (elite bowmen, swordsmasters, etc) will join you.  Unfortunately, this also applies to the nobles who give you quests.  So now, the guy who gave me the quest to kill some elite bowman is tagging along to do it himself.

Attacks to the head seem to be a bit buggy, which makes missile weapons even more deadly.

Incidentally, the level after "Extremely Strong" is "Mighty".

It was a cave in the mountains, several levels deep.  The leader in the human capital sent me there.

The key was the spear throw; if I hadn't wounded it so badly right away, I'd have been in trouble.  I barely avoided the first breath attack because I was at the very edge of its range.  If it had been conscious and able to breathe again when I got closer, things would have been bad.

Lesno Muffindances would have become Lesno Muffinbaked.

Missile weapons may be a bit overpowered; I'm only a Dabbling Thrower, but I've been killing things in one hit, in addition to crippling a dragon.

I was disappointed the dragon didn't leave a huge pile of treasure.  Maybe I didn't explore deep enough into the cave system.

Early Autumn:

33 dwarves, 79 edible food.  We need a good season at the harvest if we're going to survive the winter.

A jeweler wants to make an artifact, but he's got a desire for diamonds, which I doubt I'm even close to finding.  Nonetheless, I'm digging up every rough gem I can find, just in case he's willing to settle.

Wood is becoming scarce near the entrance.  I'm reluctant to send the woodcutter too far afield, where unicorns and elephants roam.  The critters tend to follow them back to the fortress, and Plan Crossbow hasn't exactly panned out, due to the utter lack of bones.

Unless the autumn caravan is really nice and gives me the weapons I need, I may just take a little risk and try crossing the cave river a bit earlier than I want to.

"Limul Nobleder likes... cows for their haunting moos.

When possible, she prefers to eat cow."

I survived the immigrant rush by making them all stone haulers/farmers to clear space and then make new farm plots.  We ended up as low as two food at one point, but it's up into the 60's now in midsummer.

I've started work on the eastern part of the road, simply because I have laborers standing around idle.  I also had a craftsman make some stonecraft so I'll have something to trade come autumn.  Due to lack of turtle bone, I've been using some of my copper ore to make crossbows.  Wood probably would have been better, in retrospect, but the copper vein was so rich I felt I should use it.  Still, it takes two wood to make one copper crossbow, and only one wood to make a wood crossbow, right?

The current expansion project is increasing the size of the farm area to make room for next year's immigrants.  The current development project is setting up rooms for the inevitable nobles.

I have some undeveloped silk; I should consider a clothesmaker's shop, and a loom to subsequently supply it.

A full 19 migrants arrive before I can get the spring harvest in.  This does not bode well.

The winter has come and gone, and we're still alive.

I botched the floodgates pretty badly, even managing to drown a dwarf.  But the river flooded just right, and we have plenty of workable soil--more than double what we had last spring, and more once the stones are cleared out.  I'll tinker with the gates again next winter.

We struck malachite in mid-winter, and have started work producing charcoal for smelting.  Copper weapons aren't my preference, but we caught exactly zero fish last year, so we lack bones.  Hunting for elephants and unicorns is hard enough WITH crossbows, so they're not a practical source of bone.

Our mason is producing + quality furniture now, and everyone is in a pretty good mood.  Assuming they don't get piggy and eat our leftover winter supplies before the harvest, things look good.

I haven't yet risked the elephants' wrath by building a road to the west, so no human caravan.  We'll wait for the autumn dwarves.

The autumn caravan has come and gone; I traded the clothes of the dead dwarves for all their plump helmets, as well as some leather and silk.  They didn't want my spare +felsite throne+ because it was too heavy.

Eight migrants arrived, bringing the population to 14.  This is just about perfect; I'm pretty confident I can feed 14, and the extra workers will make expansion faster.

The immigrants:
1 mason
1 craftsdwarf
1 fisherdwarf
2 farmers
1 mechanic
2 peasants

Rampaging elephants are starting to worry me (one seriously injured a merchant bodyguard), so I've accelerated the process of moving industry indoors.  The mason, carpenter, furniture stockpile, wood stockpile, and stone stockpile will move inside for starters.  In addition, it's time to add a jeweler and a gem stockpile for the gems that are accumulating on the floor.

The only metal I've seen so far is a tiny bit of copper on the cave river bank to the north, and some copper and silver on the far bank to the south.  Neither is easily accessible, so I'll bide my time and continue to clear out the closer areas.

Come winter, the most important task will be adjusting my floodgates to (hopefully) set up a reliable farming system.
