DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Miners wont mine

Tried that too. Set an entire 20 tile wall to be dug. No dice. I don't know if it's because they don't consider themselves miners or they just can't pick up the picks for some reason. Plenty of picks and they are set to mine in  labor so I don't know.

They were content/happy. The current miners are only content. I have plenty of booze and food. An entire 12x10 room stocked with food barrels and they don't say thirsty/hungry in their thoughts. Oh and mining is the only job they have enabled. Left if that way for a few minutes and they all just said no job.

I am having the same problem that several others have been lately. Only a few miners will actually mine.

It's not:
A pathing issue. Some miners are mining, coming and going. This has been happening from embark.
A pick issue. Plenty of picks all bought at embark. No blacksmithing yet so I can't make new picks.
A labor issue. Lots of new immigrants and old workers just sitting around doing nothing.
A arsenal dwarf issue. Only 18 dwarfs in the fort.
A military issue. No military.

No picks are forbidden and I have only gotten one new person mining since the start; one of the original seven. Tried to save/restart and toggle mining on and off. Is this a bug? Didn't see it on the tracker.

Thanks for the no dwarf civ warning. I changed the history seed to random and got 3 civs on the embark screen under "Your Civilization." That would allow migrants, yes?

Just watch out for that damp stone.

On second thought this area might have had an aquifer. Can't remember.

Looks like some swimming lessons would have been in order from the start.

It would seem that stone has a very high water retention rating. Somewhere around infinity. I hit some damp stone quite a ways in front and to the side of the falls and kept digging. The stone started leaking. Tried to make a channel to drain the water and the channel started generating its own water. My fort is now submerged.

On the plus side I might have found a interesting way to irrigate. Maybe I can just drain the whole thing into the cavern layer. =\

Losing is fun...

Cool. Now to find out if it makes for good target practice or just a viewing gallery for all the nasties coming across my bridge.

If it is still able to hit the bridge at that distance the splash could knock people off the bridge as well? Do you know what the safe distance would be from the falls. I could just pull the fortifications back further and clear out the stone in between them and the falls.

I just really like the idea of death streaming out of this otherwise pleasant waterfall.
The goblin was comforted by a lovely waterfall lately. He was upset with the bolt protruding from his skull lately.

I think the falls will be far enough away from the bridge so not to splash(5 tiles.) Is it possible to dig fortifications into damp stone? Does mist pass thru fortifications?

More like:

* *************
* ***------------*
* *  ~~~~~~~~~
* *                        <== Open space
*   ============
***^Entrance

* Stone
~ Waterfall
= Bridge
- Alcove

Dwarfs stand in the alcove and pew pew thru the falls and across the gap to the bad guys that have to cross the bridge to get to the main entrance to the fort off to the left.

I just found my dream embark with a massive waterfall that I plan on putting my entrance bridge in front of. I want to hide my dwarfs behind the falls, in alcoves that I will dig, and have them snipe enemies as they cross. I don't know if the falling water is going to effect the bolts and make them inaccurate though. Anyone tested this out yet?
