DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How Did You Learn How To Play

Trial and error until I discovered the wiki, but it was more fun to make colossal mistakes, so I went back to trial and error.

I remember I had the eyes rot out of my legendary speardwarf once, and it just made him absolutely unstoppable for some reason. He held off the circus with no shield or armor by himself by standing on a pile of living and dead clowns and stabbing them back down the hole. Almost won too, until he fell asleep.

Sadly, the kobolds slaughtered everyone as they went for a drink and I had to reclaim... On reclaim, I found that the kobolds and all their junk was scattered across the map, which led to everyone dying faster. x.x

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So, uh... Suddenly kobolds.

So I genned a pocket world and found there to be no dwarves. Delighting in the challenge, I embarked in a prime spot and found... Kobolds. LOTS of kobolds. And piles of large gems.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is only half the trove by the way, there are over three and a half pages of kobold civilians. And by civilians I mean they all have knives, or in the case of the hunters, bows and crossbows.

I don't want to abandon, and they're not really harming my settlement, I'm just wondering if this means FBs will be turning up shortly.

Got a danger room running, a long corridor of masterwork sawblade traps, and a perfectly contained dwarfosphere with no outside contact except the trading depot, which is carefully managed for defense.

Unfortunately, no sieges, or ambushes even. A few goblin snatchers, but I've resorted to slaughtering the elves needlessly to keep my combat dwarves from losing skills. It's starting to get boring, I may end up playing with magma to stem the boredom.

Bogeymen.  That is all.
Same here, many an adventurer has ended with his skull being KICKED through his brain. Kicks seem disproportionately strong.

After that, the next most common thing they like is Meng Glinteye, the Fungi of Attacks, my Legendary-est axedorf slaughtering whatever he slaughtered this week.

Better watch out for Meng the Merciless I suppose.

Usually my dorfs carve symbols of all the dwarven governments everywhere. Even the dead ones. Also one or two engravings of elves getting their eyelids bitten off.

... Wait what? This is crazier than the exposed circus, but not as crazy as the mountains of magma.

I vote you turn the exposed caverns into an above-ground maze with weapon traps that knock gobbos off 555 Z-levels

Burrows are your friend. You can use them to order dwarves anywhere.

Well then wouldn't I have to add every single dwarf to that burrow and then order them to not move out?
Nope, designate a burrow, go into the military screen, and set the civilian alert to that burrow.
Bada-bing bada-boom, all your dorfs are muskox-free.
Until it gets inside.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Endless "Siege" Status
« on: November 03, 2010, 04:10:42 am »
I notice that whenever a leader is mounted in a siege, the gobbos chill by their entry point harmlessly until they lose interest and leave in a few seasons. I think there's a bug with mounted siegers.

Nope, only weapon traps for me. I think it has to do with the fact that the Cave Swallows are not inclined to approach my fortress, because last siege only the leader was on one and the whole siege idled there while he derped around on his bird.
I like to think he was screaming obscenities at it, but the fact remains that apparently the Giant Cave Swallows have no interest in invading, despite what their riders intend.

That's the thing, there's bait out (in the form of a chained up dog) and everything, and plenty of openings to my fortress (all heavily trapped) but they just sit there. I even opened the main gates and they're still sitting there.

Stalls.

When the gobbos showed up riding Giant Cave Swallows (All of them mind you), I started Flight of the Valkyries and prepared for Fun. BUT... They just sat there, they're STILL there, just kinda chilling on the edge of the map while their trolls walked into my traps and promptly colored the landscape blue. Not sure what to do about this...

My last two forts had a simple magma waterfall as a deterrent for siegers. Amusingly, the elves kept trying to run forward while the melted bleeding ones were trying to flee, causing them to lay down in the magma. Ah, fun times... Oh, AND there were magma-proof weapon traps slicing at them the whole time... And cage traps to keep the stragglers from avoiding the magmatic doom.

I started a fortress in my new world, only to find out that, lo and behold, dwarves are extinct! So I get my two migrant waves, then sealed the entrance up. So far it's going surprisingly well, only two deaths, one of which was from a moody glassmaker who gave up on life and starved. Slow though, debating about penetrating deeper into the caverns to stave off death by boredom.
