Other Games / Re: Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited
« on: June 13, 2011, 07:49:25 am »
I've got a couple characters on Sarlona though it's been awhile since I played. Joining the Bay 12 guild is reason enough to get back into it. What's the guild called? I have a bard named Jestina who could join.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: animals get hungry
« on: February 19, 2011, 08:32:21 am »
No one's brought up the fact that animals now get ornery and can fight and kill each other. I had a dog kill a rabbit (or two?) simply because I had them hanging out together in a statue garden. Not sure how this will work out. You need to give animals (grazers or otherwise?) enough space to roam around or else they get ornery and fight. So no more jamming 12 dogs and cats into the same cage?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Oh, I dug a lot.

Something no one has mentioned is that underground you can build walls right at the edge of the map. If you do this, then creatures can't spawn and try to kill you. It is sometimes just easier to wall of cavern choke-points, but often the edges of the cavern are the easiest to wall of.

I tried this once and a troll spawned in right on top of, or sort in the wall. He was stuck there and couldn't attack, nor could my dwarves attack him, not even with crossbows. The rest of my dwarves refused to go near the wall ("Urist cancels job. Interrupted by troll.") so I couldn't even deconstruct the wall to get the troll out of there. The wall was very near the up/down stairs so about half my fortress was stuck down there refusing to go back up because they were afraid of the troll. That's the last time I tried to build walls on the edges of the map.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Releasing bought animals?
« on: September 12, 2010, 07:10:26 am »
If you've got a bunch, build a single cage somewhere outside the stockpile. Then assign all the animals you want to release to the cage (you can fit an infinite number of animals in a single cage). When they've all been moved to that cage, release them all.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: War Cows.

I don't think you can make War Cows unless you have it modded, and don't send in the females, send in the males to gore them with their horns if you did mod the game.

War elephants never seem to gore with their tusks, they just kick.

It might be worth mentioning that I'm using the newest version of Dwarf Fortress and I don't use the files that are linked in that tutorial.

That tutorial is for 40d, an older version of the game. There are some significant changes that have occurred and you'll probably run into problems when it comes to farming and military and whatnot.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How did he climb there?
« on: August 20, 2010, 09:51:09 pm »
I recently abandoned a fortress because I had a troll on top of a wall. No ramps or any way up there. My soldiers, even archers, couldn't attack him and he couldn't attack them but the wall was near a major section of my fortress and there was constant spam of job cancels and dwarfs running scared from the troll.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fishing...

Oceans are a great source of mussels, which are a great source of shells. Not that you need shells much these days.

Can someone devise a good method of catching whales and other creatures that turn up in oceans? Swimming hunters? Underwater cage traps? I'm clueless.

Priests, apparently, get odd titles like this.

I once found this guy in a human town:

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Migrants arrive from the ocean
« on: August 12, 2010, 09:14:58 pm »
No, not by ship, but I had a wave of migrants enter the map from the west, where there's an ocean. Fortunately for them, the ocean was frozen, though it was beginning to melt at the edges as it was early spring. It was a big wave of migrants and literally seconds after the last one made it to the beach all the ice on the map melted.  :o

Now I'm wondering if I'll get trade caravans coming from the same route. Serious Fun on the horizon?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I just got my first Mega Beast (40d)
« on: July 18, 2010, 05:23:01 pm »
The first time I got a dragon (in 40d) I, too, was very excited. I closed my drawbridge, sealing off my fort. The dragon ran to the entrance and breathed fire on my two outdoor farm plots. Curse him! So while everyone's safe inside the fort and I'm preparing my soldiers to go outside for an epic battle, I hit 'u' and check to see where he's gone to. He's dead. Wha??! I have no idea what killed him but he must have died in only seconds. My guess is a caravan got him. Talk about anti-climatic.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Marksdwarf testing.

Okay I'm going to try increasing the ammo beyond 100. Now, all I get are dwarves beating each other over the head with crossbows and no ammo. They're becoming hammerdwarves.

Here's what typically happens for me: I build a hospital exactly as described. Dwarves don't put thread, plaster or anything else in the containers. Healthy dwarves sleep in the beds. Injured dwarves get plopped in normal bedrooms and never get treated.

I had a poor little kitten get disemboweled ("Her guts is popped out.") and she dragged them around behind her for several years. Not sure what happened to her. Probably slaughtered. I should have let her grow up and see if she became a cat with bowels trailing 2 squares behind her.

Is DFConfig included? I can't find it anywhere. I'm told to use DFConfig to get rid of aquifiers. Okay. I download DFConfig, drop it into the DF folder but keep getting an error when I run it ('Path not found').
