Yeah probably, it would make an interesting mod though I suppose. Or maybe the females could be like that one kind of toad or something... the one that can like, detect a lack of males, and suddenly become male to keep the population going or something.

Since the faeries dieing out in worldgen from lack of males is kind of... bad. Probably doesn't help that the game won't, say, try to 'protect' the males in worldgen.
the problem is that (at least it was in the initial upload), the kappa, tengu, oni and youkai are not from gensokyo.
Why? because their male/female ratio is 1:1. Could we please, please, PLEASE have all species having the same m:f ratio?

you can set a top limit for the FPS. I cannot see how the temperature could make so much difference. In the past, turning it off has raised my FPS from say 17 to 22.
My point was that the jump was rather unexpected.

You know you can simply set an FPS cap, and prevent that.

In the beginning of the game, when there's very little for DF to process (a few dwarves, a few animals, a few hundred items/food/stone/etc), it's going to move VERY fast if you don't limit it.  That's what the FPS cap is for.  As your fort progresses, gets bigger, more dwarves, more animals, more "stuff", it'll slow down.
As much as it's next to unplayable, it's still fun to watch the ultra speedy dwarfs.

My computer hates whatever calculations go into the temperature.
TEMPERATURE:YES = 20 FPS
TEMPERATURE:NO = 2000+ FPS WITH A MASSIVE CAVERN EXPOSED
I want around 200 FPS, not something absurd.

Dude, what are you scared of?  Seriously?  600-800 FPS is nuts.  I'm sitting at 20 on a very large fort and I'm actually fine with it.  If I could have a few more, say 40, of course I'd be happier, but this is fine.  600-800 sounds like they'd be zipping all over the place.  If you NEED your dwarves to move even faster, I'd say you need to bring your expectations down a bit.  This isn't a first-person shooter.
No, it's just that EVERY OTHER PROGRAM I HAVE INSTALLED LAGS TO HELL AND BACK, and this goes at an absurd speed.
Also of anomalous creation: it hangs at 2500 for a few seconds after unpause. I missed the entire month of granite.
Edit: Oh god stable 1200 FPS what is this.

Everything I've read says it doesn't use multi-core.
which is why I am now very very scared
With temperature off, 14 dwarfs, 12 animals and a brook gives between 600 and 800 FPS.
with a 2.1GHz dual core CPU.

I thought The Sims 3 had something like that (well not massive trauma, but miscarriage)? Or am I believing urban legends....

Anyways, Dwarf Fortress is probably the most accommodating game when it comes to potential evil. I suspect the Creatures series (You want to breed a creature that only knows how to feel suffering? It's been done) is a close runner-up.

It's not that these games intentionally set out to enable evil deeds (on the contrary, creatures is quite awwww-inspiring) -they set out to enable total freedom of choice. There are "evil" sandboxes of different size and freedom out there, but what's interesting is that they pale in comparison to what you can do in Dwarf Fortress -because, funny enough, the creators of those "evil" sandbox games did put limits to what you can do. Dwarf Fortress is a fantasy simulator. Just as a flight simulator wouldn't be a simulator if you couldn't fly a plane into buildings, Dwarf Fortress would be less of a simulator if the player's hand was tied to the creator's vision of fantasy -or of what is appropriate.

Well, the most likely reason for toady not making it possible to have homosexual couples is exactly that: the females may indeed just be written to reproduce if they are "married".
It would make this mod hilarious and awesome, but wreck the actual game
Also the amount of food/booze you need to embark with now is ludicrous. No wonder toady made the growing times so short, the fortresses starve otherwise. my fairies ate more than 700 food before the first plants sprouted.

Also Youkai can(do?) generate peaceful, but can't trade.

You know, I can't think of any other game that gives quite the same incentive to harvest mermaids for their bones...

I can think of a lot that let you breed animals for their meat and leather though. What's the difference? Not that you can in the current version without altering the raws anyway (and even then it's not worth it as they aren't worth anything any more).
However, this is the only game in which you can abort babies via massive trauma.

What bothers me is that this game can multi-core but on my dual core laptop it's never used more than 50% CPU. anyone know why?
