Well, that seems to be cleared up then. Thanks for the help Mr. Quietust.

if you put metals everywhere as frequence, it reduces the chance of a flux site being generated.

I did notice this sort of correlation. I started three worlds with the highest level of mineral frequency and each one got almost no flux stone sites. Lowering the frequency made it possible to get flux.

...and that site was over (under?) the ocean.

Guess I'll re-worldgen.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I did my normal embark-site search (Flux: Yes; Aquifer: No; River: Yes) and returned a partial with no flux. Retried with N/A for Aquifer, still no sites. Finally did one with just the Flux requirement, and it returned this one.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Iron, the scarcity thereof

It may seem dumb to ask, but are you looking for "iron" or "iron nuggets" or "native iron" or something (like gold, platinum and some others show up as), or for hematite, magnetite, or limonite (the ores of iron in vanilla)? I have rarely not had any iron ores at all, even next to a volcano, as I usually try to embark on a location with 3 or more biomes overlapping.

I know I'm looking for hematite, magnetite, and limonite, thanks. I can't seem to ever find them, it's maddening. This particular fortress I've already made enough gold crafts to trade for anything I could ever want, but the caravans don't ever bring weapons/armor on the scale I desire.

Are you genning worlds with a lot of volcanoes? Iron is common in sedimentary layers, but volcanoes only appear in high volcanism areas which dont have sedimentary layers. So volcanoes and steel ingredients are often mutually exclusive.

Not that I've ever noticed, no. I've embarked on several places with magma, but never volcanoes.

You're right, I usually end up (after passively weathering a couple of ambushes) with a little goblinite to throw around, I just feel like this isn't dwarfy. Dunno, maybe I'm just picky.

And I had completely forgotten about prospect. Normally I just use dfhack for the "digv" command.

Like the fortress I just started...there are three veins of gold on the surface. Gold, completely open and there. But I bet, no matter how deeply I dig, I won't find iron.

I get plenty of metals that are supposed to be scarce. I've had oodles of gold, silver, platinum, zinc, nickel, and others, but never anything more useful for weapon-making than bronze. Caravans never bring enough weapons and armor, plus I feel like it's more dwarfy to make them.

So I've started probably a dozen fortresses over the last while, and each of them has had a flaw.

I never had the materials naturally present to make steel. And only rarely the materials to make iron.

I can't remember the last fortress that had an ore of iron, and certainly none that have had a source of coke. Maybe my first fortress, where I used a pre-built tutorial world and embark site. I've generated worlds with various levels of minerals, and started multiple embark sites with both Deep and Shallow metal tags, but I can't seem to find iron. Forum posts and wiki articles seem to talk about iron as if it's this ubiquitous metal that everybody has, but no matter how much exploratory mining I do I can never find it. Any suggestions? Bronze isn't exactly high-quality weapons tech.

I'm afraid I'm not dwarfy enough to recognize this particular reference.

I had this happen the other day with a minotaur. He showed up and started slaughtering all my dwarves (my military was busy killing giant mosquitoes on the other side of the map, of course), but every now and then he would stop on one dwarf and just keep swinging and missing. The dwarf was near death, lying there prostrate and bleeding, and the minotaur just attacking ineffectually. If new targets wandered nearby for one reason or another he'd move off and attack them and apparently return to normal until it would happen again a few victims later.

Whenever I build a construction out of rubble lying around, it pretty understandably says "Rough <mineral> Wall." Is it possible to make constructions smooth?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: River of Blood

Back in 40d I had a river that seasonally filled with blood. Never knew what caused it, too lazy to find out.

Was there a waterfall in it anywhere? If there was, I'm guessing the reason was carp or some other large fish plummeting over the falls and exploding on impact.
This amuses me for some reason.

For some reason? It's carp, the true enemy of all dwarves, falling to their deaths. That's hi-damn-larious.

This is a picture that helps show the awesome and terrible power of the carp and the Longnose Gar.

That little happy face on the right?

A dead fisherman.

That red stuff?

HIS BLOOD.

Dungeon Keeper and Evil Genius.

Dungeon Keeper, Evil Genius, and Dwarf Fortress really are the only 3 games in this entire genre.

Exactly what I think. In fact, if I hadn't seen this post, I might have posted the EXACT SAME THING.
