If slavery was a thing in Dwarf Fortress, what do you want to pay for it?
Can you describe the thought process behind asking that question ? What are you trying to achieve, what information are you trying to dig up, how would this information be useful ? Whatever  you believe it may be, is it worth the contempt it is going to earn you ?
They're not real dude

Hello! As you might have noticed, I'm new to Dwarf Fortress and while I have a basic understanding of some aspects, I often find myself struggling to grasp what's happening in my fortress, especially about 90% of the time. I would greatly appreciate any guidance or tips on how to navigate and succeed in this game.

Layout, organization, and a decent tileset is probably the easiest way to make shit easier to understand. For example, I almost never allow bins so I can always see how much stuff I have in each category. You can sort workshops into categories by floor - so I'll have masons, carpenters, and crafters on one floor, then farmers, querns, kitchens, stills, the next floor will be metal industry, etc.

Hello, I have not played the game for some years. I saw it on steam ! Which reminded me that it exists.

I tried the steam version but did not really like it and refunded it as all the keys are different and a lot of the menus are different.  It tends to run slow too.

The last playable version appears to be 47.05, there does not appear to be any linux binaries for the new 50.x version .

If I remember it right, the last version I was playing is 40.0x so I guess there is still 7 versions of new stuff to checkout before the game is unavailable from the enforced control change and lack of binary? It can be played in the proton I think.

What compelled this series of events? I have not kept up to date for 10 years. Is the magic arc done yet?

I don't understand what you're asking. What series of events?

On a fresh embark, I dug a few staircases and, on a whim, decided to use a plant gathering zone instead of a gathering designation (I almost never bother with gathering zones, which is probably why I never encountered this before). Dwarves refused to dig anything designated in the z levels below the zone, which was on the surface. To be clear : this was literally seconds into the embark. Relevant dwarves had mining enabled, and pickaxes equipped. No military squads had ever been created, nor uniforms established. No burrows. Flat embark, no structures, no one was stuck in trees or otherwise unable to reach the dig location. No water or other hazards preventing digging. No one was wounded, sleepy, thirsty, or hungry. No wild animals in the area. What I found most interesting, though, is that this situation caused no job cancellation messages; it's like the dwarves couldn't even attempt to take the jobs, or the dig jobs couldn't select dwarves, whichever. As soon as I deleted the gathering zone, the dwarves got to work, so I'm pretty confident it was the zone that was causing the problem. Has anyone else ever encountered this? I wasn't sure if this actually qualifies as a bug, so I'll wait to hear from people here before making an actual report.

Sorry for my blindness. Now my question is, why were wheelbarrows changed to look like flowers?

I just found an actual reason to trade : I'm going to sell my infinite gold goblets, food, and trash clothes in exchange for the written works of other civilizations, as these are the only items I can't replicate in my fort

I'll keep suggesting it until it gets added to the game. Post all the lists you want, I don't give a shit.

all these suggestions are real stark reminders of how empty the game actually is

Try to explain to a warhammer fantasy fan that an undying civilisation of permafertile supermen can only result in endless expensionism warfare as a mechanical result and he'll look at you in elven confusion. I know, I tried. When you can breed exponentially, you need exponentially more land to live, and are mechanically driven to attack your neighbours for theirs.

goblins are a kind of bacteria, got it  :D

What's the alternative? Aren't orks in 40k relentlessly expansionist and warlike anyway?

On a whim, I decided to embark in a desert, and I think for the first time I might actually have made a fort I want to play long term

I embarked with my typical setup of four anvils, some picks, some pigs, seeds, minimal drinks and plants, and no skills

The fortress is based on the three dwarven staple crops of purple shrooms, wheat, and sugar pods, we also brought pig tails for hospital thread, bags, and clothes of course

No quarry bushes, instead I get my soap and food from the pigs, and they also provide leather, although I don't really use that for anything but it's nice in case of a mood

After digging down to the caverns and magma, I found out that I have iron, copper, silver, lead, and platinum, so that's pretty sweet

I have tons of marble, of course coal for pig iron will be rare until my cavern tree farm gets going (I've only just finished flooding it)

This fort is only 2 years old, so not a whole lot interesting has happened so far, just your usual stream of adventurers fighting trolls and troggs in the cavern. I have a military set up, training, and basically fully equipped, they've killed some wild animals and monsters here and there, but no real engagements of note

I wish there was stuff actually worth trading for so I'd something to use all this platinum for

Why shouldn't goblins be competent?
