If you train dwarves in a danger room they'll be amazing in relatively short order. That said, I haven't had great luck with crossbowdwarves overall. I go with 3:1 axe:warhammer squads of three dwarves each. So a full super-squad is 12 dwarves.

I found out why I have so much gold. Apparenytly if a map is deep enough, the game will run out of rock strata to place, and the last layer will progress all the rest of the way down to the magma sea. In my case, I have a diorite layer going from ≈z-63 to z-134. That's seventy-one layers of a gold-bearing stone with (IIRC) nothing unique to it, so it generates huge amounts of what it's layer type contains. Specifically, gold and orthoclase. I have ≈630000 of the latter.

What should I do with it?

A hallway of golden statues, filled with traps.

I'm asking about the orthoclase.

Make Fort Knox. Only yellow. Fill it with gold bars in gold bins. Then challenge the Green Lantern Corps.

Channel above it and mark the open space as a pond zone (i).  If you have buckets, you should start getting water in there.

There is also a version that will designate stairs to access veins across z-levels.  Magnetite is not technically a vein (it's a cluster), so dfvdig won't work...

Be warned that it will designate all tiles of the vein, even tiles that are known damp or hot.  You might want to de-select those tiles unless you really know what you're doing, as those tiles won't trigger the "encountered damp/hot stone" job cancellation...

It digs magnetite for me.

I screwed up Gemworks due to my own stupidity (blocked off my entrance with pressurized water), and a stray giant cave swallow mount kept me permanently under siege. So I dug into hell, and my adamant-clad military utterly destroyed the demons.  So much for going out with a bang.

On the up side, I have a nice prototype for fort's auto-corpse-and-gear-disposing entryway.

A human diplomat got himself killed by an ambush, so now I'm getting human sieges.

Sadly, they just sit on the edge of the map, rather than coming down to where I can clean up the inevitable mess from my squads of legendary axe and hammer dwarves.  So there's a lot of mess outside now.

I really hope Toady fixes that soon.

I want to join! At least... as long as the fortress isn't done for before I get to play.

This is Dwarf Fortress!  It was doomed before it was even started...

That said, welcome aboard =D

My issue is that the danger room absolutely murders my fps. Drops it from 70 to 35. Also one of my militia is in the hospital with 5 red and 7 yellow injuries.  Oh well, his fault for putting on absolutely no armor at all.

*cough* Finished yet Tsarwash?

dwaef

I don't know why - but I love this word. I think it reminds me of dwemer from the Elder Scrolls games.

Typing on an Android keyboard leads to a lot of typos :p

I trapped and then subsequently opened my fortress to cavern level 3, ambushes being far too common.  I'd set up my 6 dwarf militia to defend it via burrows in 3-dwaef squads. All was well, many crundle and creeping eye deaths. Current pop: 45.

Then a jabberer appeared.

"Urist McAxeman has been struck down!"

Well, that sucks but my other two -

"Urist McUselessAxe has been struck down!" X2

...fair enough, they're in all bronze but they're my less skilled squad. I send my A-team against the now named Jabberer. Before they get there it kills six more dwarves who had been out picking  crundle bits. Eventually they chase it down and kill it. Current pop: 36.

Right. I draft more military, set them to train as i try to clean up the dead dwarves.

Jabberer number two arrives.

When all is said and done I have another six dead dwarves and no military. Current pop:30.

Fine. I forbid everything, close off the caverns, wait for migrants. For some a couple dwarves wander past my heavily trapped front entrance. Current pop:28.

Migrants, huzzah!  That brings me up to 50 dwarves!

An ambush, curse them!

Current pop: 43.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Cavern layer three.  All the spaces are dark, subterranean.  They just decided they really liked magma.

(They're an alder and a birch)

Cave-ins instagib anything caught under them. Your miner was flung by cave-in dust rather than hit by any actual ceiling.

344
Also, make your squads 3-large.  An 8-large squad does more demonstrations than a 3-large does, which are not as useful for gaining experience.

For fortress design, there are a bunch of threads floating around. However DFMA (Dwarf Fortress Map Archive) has a lot of forts on it so you can browse architecture.  And Quickfort 2 is amazing, especially for non-square designations.
