DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Underground Skycraper
« on: October 03, 2011, 08:37:24 am »
My current fort is a fixed width and height column dug-dowm / built up on a 1x1 embark, nothing can be constructed outside the boundary walls, its going to be a pillar reaching from the depths to the top of the sky. All i have to do is cut around the outer walls :)

Use the top layer as a reservoir and have some sort of liquid pouring down on all sides. you can build bridges to create an entryway connected to a lever, which disappears behind the falls when it's closed.

Y'know i do have an quifer surrounding my fort going to waste as a moat....

A Hill Titan came, bit was a bit flimsy, my shiny blue axe-warrior squad sorted it out.
Then almost straight after a Siege with Trolls, Bowman, Hammermen and some others, my snaking cooridoor of traps sorted most of them out but then the stragglers just milled about outside so i let my squads off the leash and finished them off.
Unfortunatly a few dwarves got caught outside when the ambush appeard and I had some losses.
A couple of corpses will have to be morialised or dug out of the moat when it freezes over.

Ah yes I made the mistake of making one of my best skilled and best armed Dwarves the Captain Of the Guard ... thought it would be a good thing, turned out to be more Fun than anticipated ( at least the jail was kept empty :S )

My next CoTG is going to have a wooden sword or a Candy Hammer (useless).

My guess is: You left him set to train 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, 4weeks a month, every month of the year, forever...
He got "unhappy" and went bezerk with a crossbow and his Legendary crossbow-skills.

Holy Hell!

You found a relic of the Ancients, they called it a Spaece E'leva-tor. Climb it and reach the heavens, then dig a stairwell down, down down...

You know what must be done:

Can you put a kitten in a magma-proof cage and throw it in ? I read that cages negate temperature. Or will that fact that its caged mean the kitten wont report on visibility?

I'm channelling out the floors of a pit to throw captured enemies in, carefully as possible, and of course it just has to collapse, killing or disabling all of my miners and about 10 other dwarves. I don't even know how it happened, there's just some hole that goes all the way to the bottom of the pit, as if an elephant had stood on the top and caused the floor to collapse. Apparently the dwarves in the cave-in were 'boiling in magma' at some point, even though there's no magma anywhere near it. Maybe hot dust.

I'm channelling out the floors...

Did you just designate a volume of blocks to be channeled out / start channeling several carved out rooms?
Dwarves are not smart enough not to channel out a big square of floor in the middle empty space...

Underwater Glass fort? Ive got a lake-bottom green-glass statue garden. You could either build it in winter when the water freezes (like i did) or build it and then flood the map. A surface road on top could lead up to a single glass tower rising out of the water.

A Raw 'Candy' Amulet worth 1,222,800 Ur :
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My personal favourite this fort though is an animal trap carved out of a Blue-Garnet gemstone ( bonus: it is decorated with Goblin bone :) )

*EDIT* : A new artifact just got created, it's a Candy barrel with plenty of encrustings etc and spikes of obsidian - its also got an image of the Blue-Garnet animal trap  in spore tree - I guess its the Dwarves favourite artifact as well - spooky :).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Is it possible to collect rainwater?
« on: June 03, 2011, 08:58:06 am »
I've noticed that already drained murky pools won't fill up again as the water evaporates before it can fill, however if the water level is high enough to prevent evaporation (4/5 ?) the pools will slowly fill up with rainfall.
