DF Suggestions / Re: POLL: New Channeling: Super Awesome or Super Dumb?
« on: September 23, 2010, 06:39:38 pm »
Okay. These threads to long to read. So I'm just gonna give you guys my opinion based on the first post.
I prefer the new channeling, I think it's better, and would never want to get rid of it. Though I would have zero opposition to putting the old one in together with the new one. I know I can do a few thins with the old one, that would be cool, but I still like the new one.

lol. For a second I thought you were suggesting that dwarfs bath in lye to clean themselves. That would be the fastest way to kill a fort.

Edit: This makes me think. Couldn't we logically weaponize lye? I know they used to pour hot oil and water on invaders from fort walls, could you imagine if we dumped a barrel of lye on a goblin? Lets see burning off their flesh, blinding them, poisoning them, as well as producing hydrogen gas from everything that is either, brass, tin, bronze, aluminium, and zinc. I see a dwarven war machine coming together.

Well, Quicklime has been used as a weapon, so I don't see why similar caustic or highly reactive substances couldn't be used. Tossing ground lye or an oversaturated lye sollution would probably work best, but that'd also be very dangerous to the thrower.

We could set it up like a stone fall trap, with lye barrels as, obviously what you load it with. You know, if this is mod able, I might do it.

It strikes me that the major part of Dwarf Therapist (the skill/job grid) could be accomplished in the units list in the same or similar to the way the health screen works.

I agree, this would be a perfect way to do it. And it would keep the overall format the same.

First off,

I didn't want to quote your whole post. I just don't want this game to descend into some stoner fantasy. While I know it would be historically accurate to have things such as this, and even possibly accurate to have certain authorities apposed to the use of drugs. I don't think we need to have it. We live in an age where most of the world understands the gains, and loses associated with drug use, and coming off as supporting one side, by having drug use in the game, just seems wrong. I mean, there is one sex scene, in Mass Effect, and the whole media blow up and announced it as a sex simulator, which is a completely false claim. I just think we should stay around from the issue all together as it could easily be misconstrued. And I'm gonna leave it at that.

Yeah... I don't think I want Dwarf Fort to descend into a giant stoner commune.

DF Suggestions / Re: forbid burrows
« on: September 20, 2010, 10:43:37 pm »
You can get something a little like this by using forbidden doors, hatches, etc. but I think this is a good idea.  It should be called an "interdicted burrow".

I don't mean forbidding all dvarves (as would happen with locking doors) but only forbidding certain ones.

Awww theres a distinction. But you could just use burrows and assign all the dwarfs you want to keep out to another burrow.

That can be very time consuming. Say I only want my farmers and my dedicated food haulers to harvest plants. I have to make burrows for EVERY OTHER DWARF IN THE FORTRESS to keep them from ambling off to the farming fields whenever they damn well please. That's extremely tedious. With a reverse burrow system that only allows certain dwarves, all I have to do is make one over the farm plots, assign my planters and food haulers to it, and I'm done.

Yep, and also I'm pretty sure that supplies don't really share through burrows, so it could cause problems there. Don't worry I'm still with you.

DF Suggestions / Re: Ribbon cutting ceremony
« on: September 20, 2010, 10:41:51 pm »
SO...
We'd have a menu under:
N (Nobles) > Mayor > s (options)
>Hold Ceremony>Location (from a list of rooms that can hold a party)
The hold ceremony could be a responsibility given in the RAWS so it could be added to priests and other nobles.

Strongly Agree. Especially for other nobles. I mean it should start out with the mayor, go up to baron, and all the way to king and such as each become available. Maybe we could also have a, in honor of, so we can have in the dinning room, in honor of militia captain, who one hitted a hydra.

Quote
such as completion of a public royal dinning hall

Actually from what I understand of Dwarves. The Royalty and other VIPs actually dislike it when people under them experience luxuries of a similar level.

On that subject... I wonder

Yeah, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to do it. We should just have to live with the consequences. Personally I'm rather my king tantrum and die, then every other dwarf in the fort.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: September 20, 2010, 02:24:33 pm »
just one minute ago:

i´m playing on my 4th fortress, the first which really went well... my created wealth is above 1.200.000 and my population consisted of 130 dwarfs.

then a bronze colossus enters...
i already killed a colossus (glass) and think to myself: "no problem, he´s gone in 1 minute."
my militia of 40 dwarfes even manage to cut both of his hands, but now i have an insane monster without hands roundhouse-kicking my dorfs and my dogs (he really hates them).

i wonder, if that guy is related to chuck norris -.-

Edit: He doesn´t even kill his opponents... Just leaving them paralyzed or with broken legs, killing my fps. What a bitch.

As you will learn, there is a massive difference between something made of glass, and 12 foot tall solid bronze warrior that has been fighting for it's life since the dawn of time, and is winning.

He could have only been cooler if he was stitched back together with adamantine. If he has no fat left, wouldn't he be immune to fire, and as such, could fight in lava up to his knees? I could just imagine that, an eyeless dwarf, all sowed up with adamantine, in full armor, with a battle axe standing in a pool of lava just waiting for the goblins to try.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Amazing Bug

I saw this before. I tried to find the thread but I couldn't. It's still an awesome bug though.

I learned a bad lessen with axes and captains of the guard. I had my captain of the guard, and two other dwarfs in his squad all tantrum upon picking up their equipment, which resulted in a giant blood bath, where the captain of the guard stuck one dwarf in the face, and that dwarf cut off his toes, then he after winning the fight dragged off the other dwarf and ignored that he was suppose to be prisoned too, and I was like, okay, but oh wait, he imprisoned the tantrum dwarf, with an axe still in his hand on a chain? He was starving, and killed every dwarf that tried to feed him. At the massive loss of life, my whole squad of guard dwarfs, and tantruming peasants, all went crazy, and started killing everybody. I didn't feel bad as the fort was flooding with water from one end, and lava from the other, oh lovely volcanic oceans, you are so amazing. But still NEVER GIVE THEM WEAPONS, EVER. EVER.

Infinity?
Blasphemy, I say.
No, really, try opening Arena mode and spawn a thousand dragons on one square.
That is still far from infinity. I'd say limited by your programmer's code and computer memory.
If we are being pedantic here, surely one thousand is just as far away from infinity as one million is ?

Yeah, I guess.
Urist is a meme, So, basically a trend that starts on the internet. Personally, whenever I have a dwarf named Urist in my fort, I let him keep his name, and put him in a place of power with no responsibility. So a hauler with a royal bedroom, that doesn't haul. For some reason I can't get on the wiki, otherwise I'd link you, I'm 99% sure the origins are in there somewhere. Also it means Dagger, in Dwarf.
