DF Suggestions / Re: Pauldrons
« on: September 19, 2010, 11:09:49 am »
I've seen people complaining about it being named "plate mail".

And yes, it's a breastplate now. I tend to call it plate armour or plate because it's shorter and easier to remember.

Breastplate is more accurate with what it does, then platemail, but cuirass would probably be the most accurate.. And while were at it, I can think of a few other though rare armor types we could put in like, scale mail, splint mail, or banded armor. And if were going historically accurate, shouldn't we be calling pauldrons, spaulders. Cause I think it wasnt called that till just about the end of Dwarf Forts timeline. And aventails replaced the coif, which also covered the shoulders. You got bevor, which protected the neck and face. You should probably be able to stud armor made of leather, I dont know you might be able to do that already. I know of plenty of gauntlets that don't protect fingers, simply to give the person wearing them the ability to move their fingers freely and properly wield weapons, and it's hard to make moving plate finger parts. Also dwarfs tend to use plate as a added componet to mail armor, rather then the actual armor, which is a change that happened sometime around the 14th century, so I guess it's toadys thoughts on how he wants to handle that. I dont know, all this knowledge is old and probably half right, I haven't dealt with armor forever, so just correct if I got something wrong.

DF Suggestions / Re: Food and Dwarves (Not Farming)
« on: September 18, 2010, 10:57:33 am »
Hello

I looked in the search function and did not find anything like this, so here is my suggestion.

Food Allergies:

I think that some dwarves should have some food allergies, ranging from a mild rash from eating whip vine flour to going into a deadly shock from hauling rope reeds products. Perhaps no dwarves have an allergy to underground plants. One could kill nobles this way. If a religious leader had a bad allergy it could cause..

Isn't this already represented by preferences in food. Just think that dwarves won't aet food they're allergic to unless they have to.

I don't really see how this would make for a more enjoyable game.

Theres a clear difference between me, not liking something, and me dieing if I eat it. Heck it might make sense to not tell the player if a dwarf is allergic, until they are randomly hospitalized.

I think you meant; something not being my favorite food, and me dieing if I eat it.

Its the same thing, since we all know the context of what "something" is. Which is a generalization for food. But doesn't matter. If their confused till get it when they read your post.

Anyways, I'm definitely supporting that an allergy wouldn't be known by the dwarf with it. I almost died, by complications of asthma and an unknown allergy to dust mites. Though we should also have a way to, if set up properly, save a dieing dwarf, maybe it could be something related to alchemy when it comes in, and you'd have to make up something to save the dwarf. I don't know how realistic that is, but I'm assuming magic solves the problem/ a wizard did it. Then again, it should be more likely that they have allergies to none dwarf items. Example surface crops, surface wines, animals that aren't native. It's also possible to be allergic to metals, my girlfriend is allergic to gold, and she cant wear gold jewelery (saves me some money, lol). And we could have soldiers put on armor and start breaking out in painful rashes, and a full body suit would kill you.

DF Suggestions / Re: Automatic Room Occupation?
« on: September 17, 2010, 04:05:54 pm »
Rather than waste a good topic title, how about the ability to set rooms as belonging to an office -mayor, sheriff, current noble etc- and ownership being transfered automatically?

I could agree with this. Just worrying about my mayor having a beautiful room, and sleeping in his old peasant room instead.

This could work. I think it would add a nice dynamic to the game, when you have to make different foods to keep your dwarfs alive. Allergies are basically your body overreacting to something that it thinks will hurt it, so I guess dwarfs should have them.

Yeah. And in DND, orcs and goblins, are very very different things. And weren't the big guys the suppose to be orc/goblin hybrids.

Again. Lord of the Rings and dwarf fort should be different.

Now back to halflings. And this is purely from a DND point of view, as I have been a DM for several years. Lets see when it comes to magic they like to use illusions(not relevant now). They steal compulsively. They are good at hiding. They dont get afraid easy. And if they used any kind of ranged weapon it would probably be a sling or a small crossbow, or just a thrown rock. Travel in squads of 2-4, 11-20, 30-100. They would use dogs as mounts. They would be fast, but very weak. They would be half the size of humans on average. They dont like to be bored, and would cause trouble to end it. They never hoard. Usually spend all there stolen loot right away. Though they do collect random things. They generally will live with other races. So we could find 1 or 2 in a village.

Looks- They would have dark hair, usually straight, very rarely beards, and never mustaches. Weighing 20-40 pounds
Age- They live 100-200 years, and become adults around 20.
Towns- They generally have secluded village, and will pick up and move if they can make more wealth elsewhere. Usually near other races. Some are completely nomadic.
Names- I could name a bunch, but we probably get into copy wrote material there.

You dont have to use any of that, but its just my thoughts on the situations and a way of getting back on topic.

DF Suggestions / Re: Dummy Racks
« on: September 16, 2010, 11:56:38 am »
How neat would it be if we could pick one of the uniforms we have created for our squad when building an armor dummy, and it would be armored and equipped like a dwarf would be with that armor?
Or we could maybe even armor is like a goblin?

I'm pretty sure there is no plate armor piece that also protects shoulders.  Check this thread out: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=51896.30

The following edit to the breastplate raw makes it able to protect shoulders as if it had pauldrons, though I know that at least in the 14th and early 15th centuries, the shoulder protection was part of the arm harness, not the pieces of armor for the torso, and was secured to the arming garment underneath it all:

[ITEM_ARMOR:ITEM_ARMOR_BREASTPLATE]
[NAME:breastplate:breastplates]
[ARMORLEVEL:3]
[UBSTEP:1]
[LBSTEP:1]

Also, it might be worth mentioning as it was mentioned in the thread I linked, there isn't any protection for the neck, either.  Modding the breastplate (or any other torso armour) to have UBSTEP:2 or UBSTEP:MAX makes it able to protect  the eyes, jaw, face, and ears. in addition to the throat which is sort of dumb...  There's no way to protect just the neck in DF.  You can't mod the helm to protect the neck, either, I don't think...

Perhaps a new thread with a compilation of suggested armor and body part system changes should be made if there isn't one already (and I don't think there is, though I haven't checked lately).  I might end up doing this myself or (ideally, if an old thread exists) necro an old thread about it.

On the neck issue. I'm pretty sure it wasn't till the 1600-1700, till they could completely encase a guy in metal. So armor from earlier would always have holes that a skilled fighter could capitalize on. I'm pretty sure neck was common, cause most people would rather be able to turn there head then to have guarded necks, because the field of vision of helmets was so narrow, you'd have to turn your whole body to see anybody, and you could just step left and be invisible to Urist McArmoredToMuch.

I never change from the standard embark points. It would feel weird just being able to take anything.

Agree. Maybe even more armor types while were at it. We have tons of weapons, more armor types could help.

Orcs and Orks work.

Though I'd like there to be something more original as the next stock race.

I think Ork is trademarked. So it would have to be orc. Which is what they originally were anyways. But orc is always good. I still think, a race thats more or less neutral which could make new things, would be better.

I support another stock race. I mean you could mod this. But we could always use another race to trade with. I dont think they should really be enemies. Though yeah, I can see them stealing stuff.

DF Suggestions / Re: Wood blocks
« on: September 14, 2010, 11:06:49 am »
I agree with Neek.

What are blocks, really, in terms of gameplay? They're a processed raw material that becomes more valuable but useable only in constructions and buildings. To me, that's the difference between a log cabin (x logs) and a wooden house (x planks or boards)

Actually, boards might be better than planks.

And using the same logic, glass "blocks" could become panes.

Agree. While were at it. May aswell correct the glass too.

I dont think we to make it raw editable. I dont see any reason why this just shouldn't be a change. I cant see any reason why not to change it.

First in prison. They will only bring him water. And they need a bucket for that. Second question no. Just do it that way, and change it once you get enough booze and barrels made.
