In my last playthrough, I did the only sane thing and upped the item limit to like 999999, by editing a text file.
Then I never actually omni-geled or sold anything just to make space (except the level I crap just so I would have repair supplies. also, forget lockpicking, just use omni-gel on everything :P).

Nice fix.  I'll have to try that on my next play-through.

Lousy game design though.

Kind of reminds me of the item decay hack/fix in System Shock 2.

Probably the reason why we don't have the option to downgrade to an ME1 era weapon is that it wouldn't be very effective, like trying to kill a tank with a handgun. Only the tank armor is on an angry guy who's shooting at you.

This is, more or less, the explanation we're given.

We're told that it isn't so much how hard you hit a shield, as how often you hit it.  So rapid-fire weapons became very powerful.  And the built-in heatsinks couldn't keep up with the heat being put off from these guns anymore.  So they basically built disposable heatsinks.  Dump all your heat into a clip, get it good and toasty, and then eject it instead of waiting for it to cool off.

But that doesn't make much sense.  You're throwing these clips away, when all they have to do is cool off.  The clips you find scattered around the battlefield?  They're generally other people's spent clips that've had a chance to cool off.  So why not just hang onto your own clips and re-use them when they're cool?

Or, barring that, why not throw in a traditional heatsink in addition to the clips?  Yes, I know, it can't keep up...  So I can only fire one shot every once in a while...  And it will not be effective for a real fight...  But it'd give you some ability to continue fighting after you'd run out of clips.

Looking at this from a storyline perspective it just plain does not make sense.

From a gameplay perspective...  I still don't like it, but it's at least acceptable.

I'd prefer to be able to keep firing even if my shots were going to be slower or ineffective.  There's something psychologically satisfying about being able to keep shooting even if it isn't doing any good.

But the clips aren't a gamebreaker.

They just don't make sense.

I was astonished how bad the inventory system in the first game was. In the most RPGs it's nothing special, in ME1 I actually suffered every time I found some weapons from stray geth. I frequently used to run with inferior weapons just because I couldn't bring myself to rummage through this mess and check if Obliterator XXX is better than Masturbator XXIX. Also, the equipment seemed to be generated randomly (with some variations), so even searching the dirty, flea-ridden rags of a vorcha junk peddler near the end of the game would give me better weapons than a crate in the middle of a military research base. They could have at least thrown a "omni-gel all" button.

Yup.

I like the inventory management and loot hunting aspect of most RPGs.  It's fun to find some uber weapon.  It's fun to figure out who's going to get your one supergun.  It's fun to go shopping and see how much you can afford to get and agonize over whether you should buy two good guns or one amazing one.

But ME1 was just plain awful.

Tons of loot everywhere.  Most of it basically indistinguishable.  Three different guns with just a single point or two of difference between them.  Then you had the weapon mods...  And the armor...  All of it available in different styles and ranks...  And none of it terribly different from anything else.

No quick and easy way to dig through your inventory.  No good way to omnigel all the crap at once.  And when you were over-full there was no way to skip over the really awesome thing you just picked up and delete something else instead.

Absolutely terrible.

But I don't think just getting rid of it like they did in ME2 was a good solution.  I still would've liked to be able to go shopping for weapons and armor.  I still would've liked to be able to equip different types of armor on my party members.  I still would've liked inventory management and loot hunting to be an aspect of the game, instead of just vanishing completely.

Inventory was a bit crazy in ME1...  But I disliked how they removed it entirely in ME2.  Removed a good chunk of the RPG feel.  I kind of like finding some uber bit of armor or a fancy weapon somewhere, and then having to agonize over who gets to equip it.  ME2 just got ride of the inventory completely.  Weapons for everyone!  The armor customization was kind of fun...  But you could only do it for Shepard.

Hated thermal clips in ME2.  Just plain hated them.  Didn't make sense to me.  Why would you go from infinite ammo to a clip that limited your ability to fire your weapon?  Seems like you should have been able to re-use the thermal clips after they'd cooled down, instead of just chucking them and hoping you found more later.  Or maybe you should have been able to keep firing, but much slower, when you ran out of thermal clips.

I'm eager to see ME3.  Very curious to see how importing a save from ME1/ME2 affects the gameplay.  Really curious to see what happens with the Reapers after all this...  They've been built up into some kind of seriously unstoppable evil, I can't wait to see how they're defeated.

On the Gordon Freeman note:  It would be plausible for him to freak out if it was years later, when/if he had settled down and 'forgot' about it.

Sure.

He's had time to put it behind him.  Saved the world once and for all...  Years have passed...  He thought it was all over...  Nobody's seen a headcrab in a decade...  And then one drops out of a ceiling duct on top of him.  Sudden flashbacks to Black Mesa and the resonance cascade and fighting the combine and whatnot.  Guy goes catatonic for a moment, then snaps and starts swinging a shoe around like it was a crowbar.  Makes sense.

But if you threw a headcrab at Freeman halfway through Episode 3 and had him go catatonic and start crying for mommy?  That doesn't make sense.  He just spent all of Half-Life killing the things...  Then teleported out to Xen and killed some more...  Then he came back from limbo and spent some more time killing headcrabs in Ravenholm...  Then spent all of Episode 1 killing them...  Then ran into them again in Episode 2...  And now, suddenly, in Episode 3 he's going to have a breakdown at the sight of a headcrab?

You could do it...  But you'd have to give the players a very good reason.  You'd have to spend a chunk of time explaining that he's retired and thought they were all gone.  Or you'd have to spend a chunk of time showing that all the combat and stress is taking its toll on him, and that headcrab is the last straw.  And even if you were really, really careful about it...  It'd still come across as uncharacteristic and you'd have plenty of people complaining about it.

It all sounds to me like bad writing, the plot had never been that important up until other m, so Sakamoto was having no problems.  Then he decided he should make a game where he actually fleshes out Samus' personality, then fell flat on his face having to do real writing.  I'm not a big fan of the series myself, so maybe he was great at writing until other m.

Previous Metroid games were more about the gameplay.  You didn't really have characters sitting around, discussing their childhood or reminiscing about past relationships.  You basically spent the game running around, solving puzzles, and blasting badguys.

But this, in itself, crafts a personality of sorts.  You get the idea that Samus is on her own out there.  That she's got nobody to call in for backup.  That she dove right into the lion's den without a second thought.  And that she's too busy kicking ass to spend time on flashbacks.

Other Metroid games did have some plot to them...  There was some backstory about who Mother Brain was, and what a metroid was.  And you had the whole thing with the baby metroid...  And the stuff with the phazon and the shadow Samus and stuff like that...  But you never really had Samus doing a whole lot of chatting or introspection or anything.

And that, in itself, creates a character.

Look at someone like Gordon Freeman, in the Half-Life games.  I don't think he's ever said a single word.  You know stuff about him...  People talk to him...  He does lots of stuff...  Saves the world a couple times...  But he doesn't say a single word.  So you get the impression that he's a quiet guy.  Maybe he's socially awkward, maybe he stutters, maybe he's just too busy kicking ass...  Whatever.  But he doesn't talk much.

It allows you to fill out the character with some of your own personality.  You can fill in your own comments and remarks, instead of listening to the game supply them.  You can decide, to a large degree, what's going on in the character's head.  In some respects Gordon Freeman isn't a separate character with his own personality - he becomes a suit for the player to wear.

And then the developers suddenly decide that they need to flesh out the character.

And this silent protagonist suddenly starts talking.  And starts having flashbacks.  And starts reminiscing about that time in band camp.

And not only is that character suddenly chatty...  But they're suddenly behaving wrong.

Samus has killed Ridley in pretty much every Metroid game there is.  By the time Other M rolls around, she's killed him off something like 4 times.  And suddenly she breaks down and regresses into a child.  Why?

That'd be like Gordon Freeman suddenly breaking down and regressing into a child when he sees a headcrab.

Fine...  Attribute it to bad writing if you like.  Maybe it makes more sense to attribute it to incompetence than to malice.  And no, it doesn't have to be canon.  But it still makes for a lousy storyline and some horrific characterization.

I have purchased basically every Metroid game ever made.  I have not purchased this game.  I will not purchase this game.

One of the things that was always awesome about Metroid was the fact that you were playing as a woman, and it didn't matter that you were a woman.

You play through the game as this armored badass, blowing shit up left and right.  You kill just about every moving thing on a planet.  You solve puzzles, kill posses, recover ancient technology, and save the galaxy from a terrifying monster.  And nobody ever says "hey, you're a woman".  It isn't until the very end that you discover that Samus is a woman.

But it doesn't matter.  There's no tits or ass flashing around the screen.  There's no "I'm just as good as a man" moral crusade.  You're a bounty hunter doing a job.  Male, female, it doesn't matter.

Metroid came out at a time that women in video games were generally just princesses to be rescued.  Or, if they were the protagonist, a huge freaking deal was made out of it.  Oh, look at us, we've got a strong female character!

And now Team Ninja has managed to sexualize her...

I read that essay a few days ago, and I found it interesting.  I haven't played the game so I can't say whether it's an accurate assessment or not.  I wouldn't be surprised though...  Victimization of women seems to be a popular trend right now.  It isn't just Twilight that portrays an unhealthy relationship.

But that is really irrelevant to why I won't buy the game.

My major complaint is that they took a character who was so badass that her gender did not matter, and they managed to objectify and sexualize her until that original character was just plain gone.

No thank you.

...and now the mockery begins.

My wife has noticed that I haven't been playing with dwarves lately.  She casually asked "is your computer actually making 'pew pew' sounds?"  When I replied in the affirmative, she snickered.

She then spent the rest of the evening giggling and crying out 'pew pew' as I fought off waves of shivans.

Holy nostalgia batman!

Finally got around to trying out Freespace 2.  Using that mode that re-makes Freespace 1...

Looks nice.  Don't really remember what it looked like 10 years ago, but it looks nice now.  Fairly comparable to anything else I've played recently.

Watched the opening cinematic, didn't do anything for me.  Played a couple training missions and did the first few missions, was fun, but nothing special.

Then I did that mission where I had to escort the big ship to the jump node.  And the vasudans are attacking.  And then the shivans show up for the first time.

The high-pitched whine of their engines...  Not being able to target them...  Seeing them rip apart that giant vasudan ship, then turn their attention to us...  The feeling of panic when my weapons don't touch them at all...

It all came back like a nostalgia sledgehammer to the forehead.

Wow.

General Discussion / Re: PETA
« on: December 03, 2010, 03:10:29 pm »
I'm not a vegetarian or a vegan or anything like that.  I like meat.  Animals are tasty.

But I don't want my meat-to-be to suffer un-necessarily.  I'd prefer it was raised and slaughtered as humanely as possible.  So I can understand some of PETA's desire to see animals treated better.  I've been around poultry farms...  There was a huge Tyson farm (plant?) not far from where I grew up...  The conditions were downright disgusting.

But PETA really takes it too far.  They are honestly of the opinion that any kind of domestication is cruelty to animals.  Doesn't matter if you take better care of your animals than your children - it's still cruelty.  They'd like every pet to be freed from captivity...  Never mind the fact that they'd die within days because they can't fend for themselves.

I think it's somewhat hypocritical that they rescue all these animals from a fate worse than death...  And then put them to death.  But, to be completely honest, there really isn't much choice.  Sure, they could leave the animals where they are.  And that makes plenty of sense if they're in a safe/caring environment.  In which case they really shouldn't be "saving" the animals...  But far too many people neglect to spay/neuter their pets.  And we've got metric craptons of stray/feral animals roaming the streets.  And you can't very well just warehouse them somewhere.

What I find most amusingly condemning of PETA is my sister's opinion of them...

She's a full-on tree-hugging vegan hippie.  She volunteers at local animal shelters.  She rescues strays and rehabilitates them.  She donates her time and money constantly.  She doesn't eat anything with animal products in it...  Boycotts all sorts of random groups because of what they're doing...  One hell of an animal lover.

And she absolutely hates PETA.  Thinks they're a bunch of useless publicity-whores.  Thinks their actions and policies are downright harmful to any kind of pro-animal cause.

If somebody as rabidly pro-animal as my sister hates PETA, they're doing something wrong.

I'm too tired for RAGE at the moment...  But I'm not happy.

I really thought things were going to slow down after we got that last HIS package rolled out, but they haven't.

I really thought we'd be picking up another employee by now, but we haven't.

Had an 11-hour day on Monday because of a surprise upgrade to one of our servers.

Had a 15-hour day yesterday because of a planned upgrade to another server that went to hell almost as soon as we started.

And I'm back here today, after less than 4 hours of sleep, to try to fix everything that was left broken last night.

But the reviews were good...  And the box art didn't look like Descent...  So I gave it a try.  And it was awesome.

Killer graphics (for the time).  Good gameplay.  Interesting story.  I couldn't wait for the expansion...  And then I couldn't wait for the sequel...  And then I wanted another expansion or another sequel...

Wait, the reviews were good but didn't tell you it was a space game? ???

You know...  The game came out 10 years ago.  I don't really recall the exact wording of the reviews.

I remember thinking I don't like Descent.  I remember reading reviews and thinking That sounds cool.  And I remember looking at the box and thinking That doesn't look like Descent.

Make of that what you will.

It has always puzzled me as to why Freespace 2 had low sales when it was released.

I hesitated on the original Freespace, as it was being sold/advertised under the Descent name.  The box said Descent: Freespace or something similar.  I was never a fan of the Descent games...  I guess they were nifty for the time, but they just confused me and made me ill.  I didn't really understand why you'd want to play Quake with 360 degrees of freedom.  It was too much like a standard shooter, and not enough like a real space sim.

But the reviews were good...  And the box art didn't look like Descent...  So I gave it a try.  And it was awesome.

I figure part of the reason is simply that space sims were never that popular.  You really need a decent flight stick to enjoy a flight sim, and a lot of people didn't want to bother with that.  And then the more realistic flight sims like the Jane's stuff was always more popular than the space stuff.  So it didn't leave a very large audience for the Freespace games...

But, still, they were some terrific games.  I really wanted to see more of them.

You log onto the website which gives you access to your library of games, and you can download them as often as you like, afaik. I have several games on different PCs with no issues.

Some games come with a customised dosbox to get them working, and everything I've tried up to now (descent series, planescape, cannon fodder and a few others) work with little or no problems.

Running Windows 7 64 here, so I doubt Vista will be an issue.

Very cool.  I'm running Win7 64 myself...  So if they're working for you, I should be fine.

I think I'll be playing some Freespace 2 tonight...

So, which are the must-have mods?

Solid, believable chunks of geography.  Not the weird crate-filled warehouses that seem to occupy so many games

Ok you must be making that up. I remember fairly well the game is plagued by senseless overly-large rooms that seemingly served no purpose.

Hmmm...

Well, it's been several years since I played, so it's entirely possible that I'm mis-remembering things.

But I seem to recall that most of the spaces (barring the warehouse thing at the very beginning) were shaped mostly like real-world spaces.

Obviously any game is going to have to make concessions for gameplay.  You're going to build areas that look nice and make interesting backdrops as you fight and give you cover and whatever else.

But it seems like there were less arbitrary chunks of geography where you could stage a firefight, and more "this is clearly identifiable as an airport lobby".

Dug through my discs last night...  Can't find my Freespace discs.  Kind of miffed at that.  Thought for sure I'd kept them.

So now I'm looking at GoG.  I've never bought anything there.  It looks like it's just a straight-up digital download.  Are you able to re-download the games later if you need/want to?  Or do I need to burn backup media for myself?  Also, it indicates compatibility with Vista 32 and 64...  Does that imply it'll work with Win7 64, or not?

Thanks!
