How does woodcutting underground work? (I am still a noob here)  Are there trees in the caverns that can be cut?  Also, would it be a simple matter to mod it so that I could make beds at a mason shop out of stone or no?

I intend to start a "Doom Fortress" lined with traps, winding corridors with dug out archer and siege weapon positions, and of course magma and water flooding.  I also intend to build my fortress deep within the earth, shut off from the world other then said doom passage to admit trade, migrants, and enemies. 

The only problems I have run into with this idea so far is dwarven dependence on wood.  Is there a way to replace wood beds, barrels, and bins with something made of stone or metal? 

I am also looking for any suggestions how to best implement the whole shut off from the world thing.  What else could I do to complete the mega fortress/any suggestions on what else to do in this fortress?

I have been trying to get my military to train by themselves but they won't do anything.  They just sit around and eat and sleep.  I did make sure that the squad is active, they have a barracks/armory set to train and I have equipped them with the weapons I want them to train with, and I also have an arsenal dwarf.

I have been trying to get a balance of producing food and drink for my dwarves.  I have about 1000 food stores worth of plump helmets and 50 stores of drink.  This is because as soon as I create a barrel my dwarves swoop down and put the plump helmets in the barrel so I can't brew, how can I fix this?

Spears are one handed weapons. They can be used with a shield.

About your gneiss problem: did you reclaim the map you're on?

Anything tasked (on the jobs menu) on abandon will be unusable and unmovable on reclaim.

Thanks for the answer on spears.  Yes, I did reclaim the map, is there any way to fix it and get rid of the gneiss?

I have been trying to remove gneiss from one room and and I can't get my workers to move it. (Yes I made sure stone hauling was on).  I tried dumping, then I tried unselecting and redumping, and even creating a custom stock pile for it.  They won't remove it no matter what I do, any ideas?

I assign someone to mining and I have picks in storage but they don't go get the picks and just list as having "No Job".  How do I fix this?  Also, I am in a map with very few trees, is their a substitute for wooden beds, barrels, and crates?

Alright, I have one more question.  How do I get dwarves I have just assigned to mining to get a pick.  I know I have picks in the stockpile, but the dwarves won't mine or get the pick.  They just say "no job".

DF Gameplay Questions / Trade Depots-I want my stuff!

I have been trying to figure out how to move stuff off of the trade depot when there isn't a caravan there, is this possible?  I was trying to figure out the trading system when a caravan of elves came, but I ended up giving them a bunch of stuff for free by accident.  I then just took the things that I wanted because, hey, its mine.  Now they left and I can't figure out how to move the stuff off the trade depot.

Also, when trying to build an entrance can I use ramps to make the entrance a little ways away and go down one level to lead into a long hall o' doom?  (Yes I am new to the game and have no idea how traps or mechanisms work so that is going to be interesting, but I am learning as I go)

Finally, is there a way to create a mechanism that would allow me to run a passage from the river on the map to the room I want to irrigate for farming and be able to close it off again?  I think I could use a floodgate (and a lever, don't know how this works, I will have to look into it) but I don't know how I would mine out the last block without sacrificing a dwarf.

P.S Is there a way to set job priorities? i.e. do everything related to masonry first then crafting etc...
