I use a tileset because I like to use my fortresses as story fodder for my blog, and it makes screenshots a lot more readable to non-DF-hardcore people.

Also it cuts down on the number of 'What the hell is that?' questions from my girlfriend when she's watching over my shoulder.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves aren't planting my strawberries.

Farm plots care about which biome they are placed in - for example, if your embark has a Desert biome next to a Grassland biome, if you site the plot in ground that is part of the Desert, you ca'n't grow grassland plants in it. It might still let you designate the farm to be planted with whatever you want, but it just wo'nt happen.

Doublecheck which biome your farms are in.

This happened to me once and it confused the heck out of me (and lead to a fortress loss due to starvation because I didn't identify the problem quickly enough.)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why Justice???

The only thing I have to add is that on the occasions that I've set up a 'jail' I usually do it by un-stockpiling a strip in the middle of my food / booze stockpile and then installing some silver, gold, or platinum chains which I designate as the 'jail.

This keeps the prisoners fed, boozed, and happy (Admired a fine Chain recently) and also lets any other dwarves who go get food (i.e. everyone) get the same happy thoughts - double bonus happiness!

About the baby and the well, it was just an amusing anecdote. I have the well way out of a traffic area and enclosed on three sides.
Never underestimate the dwarven ability to find trouble if there is any way possible to reach it.  Sometimes I wonder if they are related to lemmings as I've found a few corpses at the botem of wells walled off like that.  Most likely 2 used the well at once and one or more got pushed in by accident.   Make sure there is a ramp out just in case as sometimes they'll recover fast enough to survive.

Or maybe the mommy gave birth to the baby while drawing water and the little tyke popped out in empty space before plummeting into the water supply.

Once I get a high population in my fort (about 90 or so) I have enough haulers that I can spare some for dedication to less-vital tasks; at this point I generally designate two or three dwarves as 'Nurses' who only have 'Care for wounded' and 'Recover wounded' tasks enabled.

This and making sure I have way too many buckets generally prevents this sort of thing, unless of course there's a chinchilla man standing next to the water source scaring all my dwarves away with its soft fur and intimidatingly adorable moon eyes.

Dear Urist,

Sorry we missed you. We all stepped out for a moment to murder and devour everyone in your home, and to set fire to the world that you love. Don't worry, we'll be coming back for you.

Sincerely and with love,
ALL OF THE DEMONS

I love it.

I also use iron minecarts to carry magma directly, without a track.
Putting magma-filled carts into (magma safe) wheelbarrows makes the hauling a lot faster.

The physics involved in this operation make my eyes water.

I love it!

Keep it up, you've got great writing style. I'm looking forward to getting some more... interesting... combat reports to give you :)

No, Sulacsol, no! Sorry, university kinda floored me a bit in the past few days.

Hammergoblin and lamb + Cook strangling thief are incoming.

And grasshopper people? (she asked hopefully)

Well, a brief update - the reclaim is going well so far, though the starting seven are a little overwhelmed by the amount of work needed to put the fortress back into working order.

The biggest annoyance (other than food that drifted into the lower levels and is now rotting and letting out huge miasma clouds) is currently coping with the ghosts that keep popping up from the dead of the final collapse.

No goblins or any other hostile creatures around yet, just a trio of Hamster People. Doesn't get less threatening than hamstermen.

I hope that I get some migrants soon, or this work will take forever.

So what's the  current setup again? No longer a fort infested with HFS denizens from which we must retrieve an artifact shield?

Well, currently the fort is alive - I just started the reclamation embark - thanks to the efforts of Pirate Bob and his adventurer, Tekkud Sirabkol.

It shouldn't be too long before another adventurer is needed, though - I have a tendency to underprepare military-wise, which will be exacerbated by actually wanting to lose this fort in a way that makes it interesting for an adventurer :)

If you keep your eye on my blog (www.elleshaped.com) you can follow the second embark to its conclusion, and join in the next reclamation attempt.

By the way, the lever in the dining room operates the floor spikes in the training room. I don't blame you for not noticing since they would've been out of LOS from where the lever is.

It's designed that way on purpose, so that the lever puller doesn't get distracted by any blood, impalements, or baby deaths he or she might witness.

I have successfully liberated Kilrudzulban from the goblins, and placed the log of Tekkud Sirabkol as a Google doc.  I'm not sure if this is the style or length you are looking for, so feel free to edit it if you wish.  I also placed the save file on DFFD.

I killed seven goblin spearmen and one theif.  I openly walked around the site at least twice afterward, and it seems to be empty.  I then moved Tekkud back to a nearby human fortress and retired him.  Hopefully this is what you were looking for.  If you need me to do anything else, or if you think there are more goblins etc., please let me know.  If not, good luck with your fortress!

That's exactly what I was hoping for!

As far as I know, the ambush that finally took the fort down was seven spearmen. The previous ambush of swordsmen had decimated my military, and they just couldn't stand up to the spears.

I'm browsing the report and the save now, look for an update tomorrow - it's a little late to start a project tonight.

Thanks and I hope you had fun!

One of my mechanics just made an artifact chert mechanism.

There was nothing particularly awesome or funny about the artifact itself, but it had a picture of a dragon on it.

The dragon was named "Ral Ivoryflames the Glowing Luxury" which I thought was pretty awesome.

The picture was him striking down some loser human named "Dur Yawnweakness" which is a pretty silly name. I wonder if he was sleeping when the dragon ate him.
