found the reason: there are two goblin civs, at war with each other. they ambush at the same time, kill each other around my fortress revealing each other and then the winner throws himself to my traps.

Wait.....this can happen? Since when?

Minecraft is more popular because it is infinitely more accessable. That's about all there is to it.

Is it really that easy to learn? Everytime I tried playing Minecraft I wasn't sure about what I should be doing. When I started playing Dwarf Fortress I at least knew what I was trying to do. I just kept failing miserably at it.

You know what I really don't like about Minecraft? There are only about 6 enemies in it, as far as I know. One of the things I like about Dwarf Fortress is that it has dozens of different creatures, not including the procedurally generated ones that can result in thousands of different foes.

When you say "it certainly isn't for anyone", this says, to me, that no one should be playing it.  While this has an amusing ring of half-truth to it, you probably mean it isn't for everyone.

ffffffffffffffffff

I am a shitty proofreader.

Nice start.  Since you mentioned fixing some grammer mistakes, may I refer you to the first line, where you described 'copious amounts wealth bloodshed.'

Did you mod blood to be made of gold, or do you mean wealth and bloodshed?  :p

Thanks, somehow I missed that even after revising it several times.

Or the items are generated upon the caravan's arrival. The merchants actually make their trade goods while they venture to your fort.

Hm...

Perfectly logical explanation for this based on the game's mechanics

OR

Time traveling artifacts that travel into the minds of crafters across the globe?

I'm going to go with the later.

I checked legends mode for the fort I just started, and as far as I can tell the Dwarves are pulled out of thin air. Which is somewhat annoying, but at the same time I guess it gives you more artistic liberty.
You've always been able to see their age in fortress mode, which is an indicator that the game stored birthdates somewhere.

True, but that doesn't mean it didn't just randomly generate those birthdates either. Speaking of which, does anyone have Dwarves less than 50 years old, excluding children and dwarves born in the fort? That seems to be the lowest age I've found in my forts.

Any way to make the elephants siege me like in Boatmurdered? I want a REAL challenge. Like, start-out-and-come-under-attack challenge.

The mod section has several mods to satisfy this kind of masochistic gameplay.

I've never noticed zombies slowing down my forts though.

Well I was gonna try my hand at this, but 11FPS is a bit too low.

11 FPS? I don't it's even close to that slow on my computer, and it's not exactly an incredibly advanced one either. Though FPS has slowed down considerably now that I think about it. When I was testing things for my LP, I was shocked at how fast the dwarves were moving. Townbrush is so much slower, and that's with only 2 dwarves.

To be honest, the payment model sadly is the main thing that gave Minecraft its attention. 90% of the news around the game were not about the game itself, but actually about how much money it made / how the paypal account was blocked and so forth. That was the actually important advertisement.

Strange, but true. These news actually showed up before Minecraft was making millions - they started pretty much around the DF-donation level. Google it, you will be amazed how actually taking money for stuff can make it more popular.

I also suppose people are more likely to give more attention and time to a game they had to pay for, and are thus more likely to talk about it.

It's true though. DF was actually starting to get some more mainstream attention before Minecraft took off and stole its thunder.

What exactly happened to make Minecraft so popular? Before I saw people talk about it around as much as Dwarf Fortress, then suddenly it was FUCK YEAH MINECRAFT!!!!!

Big deal. One of my axe dwarves lost her left arm, several toes, and a few teeth and she didn't go to the hospital. She went right back to training before getting crushed by a forgotten beast many years later.

Well I'm about done with the introduction post. I figured I'd post it here to get some feed back on it and make sure I'm not omiting some important detail.

Spoiler: this is the post (click to show/hide)

Trying to describe Dwarf Fortress is actually way more difficult than I thought it would be. I'm probably going to think about that more and revise it, along with fixing all the grammatical errors I haven't noticed yet.

I also noticed my dwarves actually had a birth date now instead of being spawned mysteriously out of thin air. Or maybe they had a birth date assigned to them despite being conjured up, I'd need to check Legends mode to see that.

Also a minor problem with the new worship system is that I've seen dwarves that worship the same god twice. So you end up with dwarves that are both casual and faithful worshipers to the same entity.

Speaking of worship, is it possible to get dwarves in fortress mode that worship megabeasts?

The Escapist seems like a really good place to introduce DF. I assume this is a written LP, then? I think the best way to do an entertaining fort mode LP is to embark somewhere ridiculously dangerous. That's what makes community stories like Headshoots and Battlefailed so awesome.

Good luck by the way. ;)

Well I've already decided to embark on a terrifying ocean again. Mainly because I thought it was the best balance between my own personal understanding of the game and the potential for Fun!. Granted it (probably) won't contain as much bullshit as Townbrush because the Darnen have been smacked with the [DOES_NOT_EXIST] tag. However I still haven't perfected my idiotic fort design, so zombie whales bursting into the dining room could still be an issue. Plus the new ghost system could certainly make things interesting. I'm not hoping for the fort to go to hell or trying to make it do so, but I don't want to put in a place where nothing would happen.

Originally I was thinking about doing a traditional below ground fort, but figured that Dwarf Fortress is all about expressing your own creativity. So why not show of that you can build forts in completely different ways?

Will the dusk of Townbrush work its way in somehow?

Only in obscure references. This is in a completley new world after all.
