DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Anal Rituals
« on: August 18, 2010, 03:46:22 am »
I try to make my workshops out of as many different colors as possible, to the point where I will almost cause everything to die of thirst just to make my stills look different from the fisheries.

DF Modding / Re: 0.31. MODDERS WORKSHOP (NEWCOMERS WELCOME!)

So I just made a new creature, and it is functional. However I noticed that in most fights it's shell would often be torn off or smashed before the rest of the body is damaged. Ideally, the creature's shell should be the toughest part of its body, so it should not be so easily severed or smashed. Is there any way to make it tougher? I still don't know much about modding so I'm not sure.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Elven Fungal Lorax?
« on: August 17, 2010, 11:16:55 pm »
Trees are trees, as far as the Elves are concerned; it doesn't matter if they're deep underground and made of fungus - they'll be just as angry if you cut them down.

You mean: just as angry if you have them in stockpile when the Hippies visit? AFAIK, they really don't care how many you cut down... as lonbg as you use most of them up.

Well that's sensible. They just don't want Dwarves to be wasteful.

Still not going to stop me from seizing all their good and decapitating the merchants when they displease me.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Townbrush has finally managed to get some power. The new military is armed with steel battle axes, which allowed them to cut down the Ogres that had taken residence inside the mausoleum with minimal injuries. Now I can resume construction on the tower, hopefully without any more major complications.

On a sadder note, it seems my own personal Dwarf has lost the ability to stand. I refuse to kill him though. Even if he wasn't me, there are only 3 original founders still alive. I don't want them to die.

Unless it's changed since 40d, it'll be CAN_SPEAK. Note that if you're not averse to changing the dwarf ethics, you can just swap the UNTHINKABLE under EAT_SAPIENT_KILL and EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER in the dwarf entity entry with ACCEPTABLE to allow sentient butchery on the whole.

(I presume you realise that merpeople already exist)

Yeah (though they're restricted to good biomes, which is annoying). Thanks for the info. Also, according to the wiki all harpies are female. I thought if a species was only one gender, they couldn't reproduce and would die off. Did this change at some point?

I was wondering, what is the exact creature tag that makes Dwarves consider a creature to be to intelligent to slaughter? I was thinking of creating a very valuable (but very rare) merperson, but I want my Dwarves to actually be able to butcher it.

I hate the tamed ogre, that became mayor of my fortress. -.-

How could you let such a vile creature become mayor?!? Destroy it at once! It's probably arranging a secret deal with the Goblins, where it will "accidentally" leave the front gate open. Then the Ogres will invade your graveyard and make it their own personal clubhouse.

Dear Engraver Deduk Fikodotin,

These Engravings are unacceptable. I know I asked you to depict the history of our civilization and Fortress rather than koala demons, but I don't like being reminded of my failures as your leader when I walk down the halls of our Fortress. While Ogres smashing Dwarves is the best summary of our Fortresses history, you could focus on the positive aspects instead to help improve morale.

So either stop making these appalling images or I will be forced to relieve you of your duties. This may involve an unfortunate accident involving the Ogres you seem to love so much.

From Expedition Leader Kraken.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Nethercaps and refrigeration
« on: August 16, 2010, 04:03:06 am »
What if I just built an artificial pond out of nether caps and then filled it with water? Would the water still freeze?

Gah, I should really breach the other cavern layers. Instead I have to keep mining bituminous coal since I only just found it on my embark site.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Salt everywhere
« on: August 16, 2010, 03:48:30 am »

Anybody who has done the dwarvern science with the current version of DF who would like to give some verified info would be most appreciated

I constantly embark on Ocean biomes. I have never desalinated water. I have never had to. Dwarves happily drink from the well when neccesary. Hospital patients are not harmed by it. It acts just like water you would find in any other biome. And my wells plunge straight into the ocean.

Giant Eagles.  Normally they're not so bad, but when one gets annoyed, you can say goodbye to any Dwarves on the surface.  They'd probably be a lot less annoying if crossbowdwarves knew how to use their weapons properly.

Yeah but at least in Vanilla Dwarf Fortress they can be turned into kickass war animals. Ogres can't be trained. They can't be butchered either. Also, one of the Ogres has earned the title "Princesstrap" for killing my Dwarves. Seems like an odd name.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What wild creature do you hate the most?
« on: August 15, 2010, 11:09:51 pm »
So there is a huge variety of animals and creatures that roam the wilds in Dwarf Fortress. Some of them are harmless, some of them are irritating, and others can be downright deadly. I learned this in my most recent embark, in which I encountered the Ogre. This creature quickly became one of my biggest problems. They hunt down any Dwarf they see, mercilessly crushing the life out of them. Even my military couldn't stand up to them, due to their lack of armor and weapons. They have killed over 20 Dwarves over the span of 3 years, and there is no end to the problem they cause me.

So I was wondering if there were any other creatures that other players have bad experiences with (Obviously excluding civilizations and megabeasts).

That just means you need fuel (I think). You don't need 150 fuel, that's just an error.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What's wrong with this Dwarf?
« on: August 15, 2010, 10:40:34 pm »
Do you have the Goblin Swordsman that injured him trapped in a cage? Disarm it, let it out and kill it. That should fix the problem.

Nope. However he did leave the map, which caused the Dwarf to suddenly snap out of his psychotic nightmare and drag himself up to the hospital.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Okay, the Ogres have the be allied with the goblins. It's the only explanation for their bizarre behavior. When they showed up on the map, I was glad for once. They would inevitably end up in a fight with the Goblins. Instead, they went in the opposite direction of the goblins. They went toward my megaproject and entered the mausoleum located beneath it. I feared that they were going to smash everything inside, but instead they're just hanging out inside. They've made it their own little Ogre hamlet. So now once I deal with the Goblins I'll have Ogres to fight. Though by this point that's par for the course.

Also after examining some of the feature of Dwarf Therapist I learned that only 3 of the original founders are still alive. In fact, almost all of the Dwarves from the forts early years have died. Now only the idiots that thought it was a good idea to visit our little slice of hell remain.

EDIT: The goblins finally left. However, not before one final insult to my Fortress. One of the swordsman didn't go with them. He stayed, and made his way into the Fortress since I didn't notice his presence. He took only one victim; my very last soldier. Since she was basically a cripple, she didn't put up a fight and was cut down almost instantly. Then, like a coward, the Goblin fled into the depths of my Fortress and proceeded to exit the map through the caverns. The only upside to this is that it revealed a flaw in my cavern defenses.
