DF Gameplay Questions / What's wrong with this Dwarf?
« on: August 15, 2010, 09:43:19 pm »
So a Goblin Archer shot one of my Dwarves several times. However, the Dwarf was on a cliff inside my fortress so he was able to crawl into safety easily. He then fell unconscious right at entrance to my fort. This happened a season ago. He hasn't moved since then, and might as well be dead. In fact, I'm not sure about how he is even still alive. He hasn't eaten or drank since he received the injury. He's just been lying in front of the fort.

I was wondering why nobody bothered to take him to the hospital. But it seems like he keeps trying to bring himself to the hospital, despite being unconscious. I've come to this conclusion because I've been bombarded with this message constantly;

There isn't a Goblin Swordsman anywhere near him. I can't figure out why he would be freaked out by an imaginary swordsman, especially when he is unconscious. Point is, he's gotten to be rather annoying. So is there anyway to save this guy, and if so how? If not, any ideas about how to get rid of him without injuring the other Dwarves that walk by him on a regular basis?

Dood kraken, that is friggan AWESOME! If you chopped off the connector would the rest still stay above water? You could effectively have a floating fortress.

No.

I build my Fortresses on top of oceans. It's kind of hard to explain what it looks like, so I'll just post a picture.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's what the main floor of most of my Fortresses end up looking like, though some parts of it (such as the noble housing) are not built yet. The area to the left of the food stockpile is where all food related industries are built. To the right is the dining hall, and the sleeping quarters are located bellow it, while the hospital is on top. At the very end of the Fortress is the finished goods stockpile. That area is multilevel and contains most of the other industries, such as metalworking, carpentry, gem cutting ect. The only signifcant parts of the Fortress not located above ground are the farms and barracks. The farm is located in the caverns for obvious reasons. The barracks are located above ground because my military kept killing themselves in the above ground barracks (also pictured). They kept falling out of the barracks during sparring sessions, drowning in the ocean bellow. Even when I built walls around it they still fell into the ocean, somehow. So I just decided to keep the barracks below ground.

Dude, I can imagine hordes of war gorrilas with armor running into an elf caravan and ripping them into tiny pieces and shit.

Awesome.

I caught a breeding herd of elephants, once.

The whole topside was awash in blood.  <3  oh the memories

Also I have a saltwater croc now <3 <3 and am working on collecting the regular and giant big cats GOD DAMMIT someone tell me the DM bug has been fixed :[

I wish I had some god war animals on my embark site. Everything here is a blasted zombie. The only normal animals I've seen have been Gazelles and Ogres. Speaking of which, the Ogres never seem to show up when the Goblins are here. I think they have some kind of pact formed over their mutual hatred for my Fort.

Anyways, Townbrush is still in lockdown. I realized that marksdwarves could help solve this predicament. Unfortunately, nobody in my fort knows how to use a bow. The best I could find was a novice. He's been firing bone bolts down at the goblins for a few days, and so far all he has succeeded in doing is breaking one of the Goblin's ears. I would give him some better bolts, but I don't have enough bars to produce metal bolts. And I don't have any fuel left to make more.

More goblins showed up. My mechanic never got around to building cage traps, so the goblins moved in with no resistance. My military commander then died of infection. This means that only one Dwarf remains in the military. In my Fortress, the only way to get promoted is to have your leader die a horrible death.

The entire Fortress is in lockdown. I couldn't save the merchants either. The Dwarf I had operating the lever for the drawbridge decided to fall asleep immediately after I put him in the lever room. So I couldn't raise the bridge in time to let the merchants in. Now there are bunch of pissed off goblins running around trying to find a way into my Fort. On top of that, the human caravan guards that got locked in last month are probably going to go insane and kill everyone. Another wonderful day in Townbrush. All it needs now are some Ogres eating Dwarves and the whole thing will be complete.

I've noticed that if you start in a section of ocean bordering land it is fairly shallow, if you embarked in the middle of the ocean it would logically be much deeper right?

I'm thinking of an embark on the ocean, but Can't tihnk of how to do it without running into the "Constructions in ice lead to black squares of doom" bit. or not being able to embark because there's no solid ground.

The last bit would stop you from embarking in the middle of the ocean. Though I suppose embarking on a very small island might mean that the oceans are deeper.

Oh god. The goblins just launched an ambush. It's only the third year. I don't recall ever getting ambushes this earlier. I am not ready for this. I haven't gotten the metal industry up and running to make traps yet (haven't found any fuel yet, so we're currently relying on charcoal). Which means that my miltiary is also still using their fists. not that it matters anyways, since only 2 soldiers survived the Ogre attack, and they are both heavily injured. I have no choice but to seal the Fortress and pray the goblins get bored and leave. But I think my fortress might be doomed.

EDIT: Just noticed that 2 Dwarves are still trapped outside. I wonder how long they will last.

They can go in hiding? I thought, creatures could not hide, only arrive on the map hidden.

If they enter parts of the cavern you haven't explored, they will vanish from the units list. They're still on the map though. This can make it hard to keep tabs on a Forgotten Beast. As far as I know though, they never leave the map.

God damn Ogres. Theirs never a boring moment in Townbrush between the Ogres and Cave Zombies constantly tearing Dwarves to pieces. Normally when they wander onto the map, I just order everyone to go inside. But then my Giant Eagles apparently caught site of the Ogres, so they flew down to kill them. I wasn't going to let my Eagles die, so I ordered my military to go attack the Ogres. Of course everyone in my military is an idiot so this didn't work well.

They all charged at the Ogres one at a time, rather than work as a team. This meant that the Ogres were easily able to slaughter them one by one. The first one didn't even arrive in time to save my Eagles. He got punched so hard he flew into the ocean and drowned. The second one just got beaten to a pulp. Then they started arriving in groups, so I thought this might be the turning point (it wasn't). One of the Ogres became a major badass, slaughtering almost all of the Dwarves. My military started out at 10 Dwarves, and now it's down to 3. The ogres were starting to leave the map, but then my idiot Marksdwarf shows up (he was to busy drinking and eating to help earlier). He tries to beat the Ogre to death with his crossbow, which was about as effective as it sounds. So he got crushed, and now the Ogres are pissed off again. So it's time to draft everyone in the Fortress and pray they can scratch the Ogres to death. Again.

awesome. btw, is it possible to capture whales for breeding? obviously not skeletal ones :P

In my experience with oceans, whales are quite rare. I've only seen a pod of whales once. So even if it was possible to breed them, you're not likely to ever see them in the first place. You'd have to devise some sort of trap to capture the whales and make sure they are in breeding pairs. That might not be to hard, but I imagine it would be difficult to make it so that you can separate the whales offspring from the parents for butchering.

Speaking of terrifying oceans, I haven't seen any skeletons yet. There are plenty of zombies (one of my Dwarfs just punched a Zombie Blue Shark to death), but skeletal creatures are nowhere to be found. Where they removed, or are they really rare?

Is that the only way? I'm not particularly fond of them. Can't get them to work right, plus nobody in my fort is skilled with a bow.
Could you drop a cave-in on its head?

Engineering a cave in to use on an area Dwarves enter sounds like a bad idea.

Not that it matters now. The Zombie Troll apparently got bored and wandered off the map.

Marksdwarves?

I've got a problem with my fortress that I can't figure out how to resolve. I built a wall surrounding my underground farm to protect it from Forgotten Beasts. The top of this wall is connected to the edge of the map, which apparently means monsters can enter the map on top of the wall. A zombie troll happened to enter the map this way, and it is ruining all of the the work in the caverns. The troll can't actually do anything though since it is on top of the wall. This sounds good, but it also means my military can not reach it. I tried to construct a staircase to reach the troll, but none of the builders can go near it without getting sacred and running off. So I'm currently at a loss as to what to do to resolve the situation. Any advice?

So a forgotten beast decided to show up. No big deal, oh wait he can fly. And he breathes fire. And since my military sucks, this is a recipe for disaster. However, I ended up getting incredibly lucky. Rather than attack my dwarves, the beast instead decided to run into the graveyard and destroy the coffins. While he was busy doing that I sealed off the graveyard, locking the beast inside. Now he is trapped with no way out, saving the Fortress from certain disaster. Now I just need to find a new place to bury my corpses.
