Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Armok should pray to his gods, for the mercy that I never get a grip on his lousy beard.

What the hell does "Pregnantscream" mean?

A mason was just possessed. He ran to the leatherworks, then bounced back and forth between it and the tannery right next door about 5 times before beginning his mysterious construction. I can't wait to see what he produces  ::)

EDIT:

Why must my artifacts always suck?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Plant Them darn seeds ya farmers!
« on: June 21, 2010, 07:42:36 pm »
If your seeds aren't being planted fast enough, then you need more farmers. Simple as that.

I've never had an issue with food shortages though. I've had a few booze shortages, but I resolved them. I find that food is just really easy to acquire when you have multiple sources. If you don't do this already, you should try investing some points in breeding animals at embark and then slaughter their young.

On the subject of useless migrants, I never have a problem with them. But that's probably because I don't specialize as much as other people. For example, I don;t have any fish dissectors. They get turned into cooks, which has them do more jobs than just fish dissection (though that is a full time job for most of my cooks right now). Otherwise I just have my migrants join the masons or haulers club. Can't have enough masons.

The Elk Bird menace has been defeated. I've walled off all areas of the caverns that I'm using. Though I'm installing some cage traps regardless and will put in weapon traps later on.

It's the end of the first year, and I have 50 dwarves already. Is this normal?

Last time I got one, he died of thirst despite being freed from the cage. How do you keep them alive?

I just had a child drown to death. Not my fault though. He tried to remove a platform whilst standing in a position that would send him plummeting into the ocean. There were plenty of other places he could have stood, but instead he favored the spot of guaranteed death.

How do i start Fortress as human? The article on wiki says me to add the tag to race in objects/entity.. will it work?
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Human

You would need to add the [CIV CONTROLLABLE] tag to the human entity. Then on the embark screen, press tab until you are viewing the civilizations screen and scroll through the civs until you find a human one. Then you're playing as humans.

I think. I haven't actually done this myself.

Is there any way I can force my cooks to butcher an animal corpse as soon as possible? I killed a ton of Elk Birds, and I want those corpses butchered before they rot.

You know, I was beginning to think these Elk Birds were just an annoyance. They were killed easily, and all they really did was bother my workers before the military showed up.

But now one of them just snapped my Engravers spine.

I don't care to much though. He was part of a migrant wave that just arrived, consisting of 23 dwarves. I mean come on  :-\. Managing all of that is a pain, even with Therapist.

I decided to expand my caverns to include a small fishing pond. I already have plenty of surface fishing, but I figure some variety would be nice. I'm now regretting this since Elk Birds are trying to beat the crap out my miners. Sending the military down to get them, hopefully I won't experience any fun, since my two legendary miners recently got married.

How could he get Centaurs and Chimeras without modding? They don't actually "exist" in the game.

I breached the caverns and established a tiny farm for the purpose of brewing. I'm not going to pay much attention to it thought, since I"m already getting enough food (and shells) from fishing. Also, I'm surprised a novice axedwarf can beat an elephant in one vs one combat.

Well some of the skills you want to embark with are dependent upon were you are embarking. But in general, you'll always want a miner (or 2). If you're going to be farming, you'll also want someone skilled in farming. I'd also embark with at least one pair of breeding animals. Butchery can be a good source of food.

I don't get why everyone thinks thinks civs die out to easily. To me, it makes perfect sense that some civs will die if you generate a small world. There isn't nearly enough room for all of the civilizations and megabeasts to occupy without killing each other. With the exception of my custom civilization, I've never had a problem with civs dying out during world gen. If you want more civs to survive, generate larger worlds.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tileset/ no tileset poll

I use the vanilla graphics. My main problem with all the tile sets I've seen is that they try to fit to much detail into in each sprite. Everything ends up looking cluttered and confusing. After playing with it for a while, I actually find the standard appearance to be very appealing it. The simplicity of it is very nice, plus it lets me use my imagination.
